omg bless you for asking me about this because i never get to talk about this fic with anyone!!! okay. i have exactly two long fics i reread religiously once a year, and this is one of them. i will never get enough of it.

the fic is called take this heart. the idea is that 'vampire mates' are a more serious business in this universe, with vampires knowing instantly that they're mated when they see each other the first time (but the instinct usually doesn't appear when one person is still human...). so yeah, carlisle and bella are mates (and esme and edward, which is very cute). it also gives bella a darker past (tw: abuse, read the tags for sure). i think the only thing that would stop a person from reading this is the writer's portrayal of charlie, but if you stick it out, charlie's character arc is so so good. i do think you kinda have to take him as a completely au version (canon charlie is a great dad, and he's really not in this fic), but otherwise:

featuring: an incredibly nuanced portrayal of all the twilight characters. i'm serious. jasper moonlights as a therapist but also his traumatic past is well evident in how he clashes with and protects the cullens. edward is incredible, a great friend to bella, in a way that i think romance kinda ruins the possibility of in canon. also, they do some fake dating and it's very entertaining. jacob is hilarious and complex and throw any love triangle bs out because he is there to be bella's BFF. rosalie is frustrating and justified and vengeful and UGH you just have to read it. alice, esme, and emmett play smaller roles, but they come in clutch in key moments. the quileutes and volturi are around and just better than canon in every way. (chelsea is especially very well explained/portrayed)

bella is flawed, difficult to get close to, genuinely funny, quirky without being annoying which is so hard to write. her journey to happiness after so much tragedy is honestly inspiring, and some of the advice that she gets from the people around her (esp jasper) is seriously applicable irl. she loves carlisle in this way that too big for her human soul and it's achingly perfect.

Esme and Tanya never call Charlie by his name, reason being is because Esme's awful ex husband was also named Charles and he ruined the name for them

Bella doesn't mind Leah and Angela staying in her cottage but Marzia is a NO GO. This is supposed to parallel the fact that Carlisle is alright with the kids/Charlie going into their 'dens' but draws the line at anyone not directly related to Bella/people Bella allows [Jacob is repairing their relationship and he's now allowed in the cottage!]

Irina explains that 'Dens' are places a Mated pair will fill up with each other's scents to find comfort and its especially important to have them for Newborns and Newly Mated pairs. Carlisle's instincts register his Study as a den when he's talking to Tanya, and he's confused about it-BUT in the previous interlude with Charlie it's implied that Carlisle and Bella once had sex in the Study and Charlie says her scent is VERY strong in there-so it's likely their activity was recent and that's why it's currently a 'den'.

Interestingly enough, Leah and Jacob-as seen in the break in chapter and implied by him waiting around inside the sitting room-the two Shapeshifters are not allowed to actually ENTER the bedroom but Rosalie could

Bella can ALWAYS tell when Jasper is using his gift on her and assumes that he's just being polite by being blatant, but in Equinox he's GENUINELY surprised she can tell. Eleazar has even said he's surprised Jasper's gift works on her at all.-If Jasper were to be asked, he'd say Bella feels off to him, muted and a little muffled. This is a nod to the fact that she's going to have the same gift as in the Open your Heart Series and that means when she's turned she'll be closed off from Jasper completely.
