Malay Heritage Centre

Wow Singapore! What culture you posses.

On our first two days in Singapore we visited a series of locations for cultural immersion and it worked. At the end of the two days, I felt immersed, slightly overwhelmed, yet eager to learn and expand my knowledge. I had the desire to develop a better understanding for what my eyes have seen and my ears have heard.

I will be posting about another three locations that were part of our cultural immersion but to start with lets talk about the Malay Heritage Centre.

MALAY HERITAGE CENTRE:

The Malay Heritage Centre which is now known as a museum and cultural centre, was built between 1836 and 1843. The building was built and designed for Singapore’s last Sultan, Ali Iskandar Shah, sadly he passed before construction was completed. His son, Tengku Alam continued to reside in the palace for several decades before it underwent refurbishment and became the Malay Heritage Centre.

Keeping with tradition and respect for the Malay culture it is still custom for visitors of the centre to remove their shoes before entering as once was required when it was lived. In Australia this isn’t a tradition that is passed on or applied prior to entering a house out of respect or religion but more in-line with people who don’t like a visibly dirty house.

The Malay Centre also provided insight into the trading months/season of the Malay Archipelago and how the winds and tides (not to mention the monsoons) would impact heavily in the exchange and imports into and out of Singapore to and from the surrounding islands. While we now have little restrictions on where and when we ship supplies, it is humbling to learn how treacherous trading and migration once were and at times can still be.

When you venture off into the streets of Gothenburg, you will come across a wonderful spectacle. An area of architecture that is rich in history, filled with a mixture of the old with the new. (19th century vibe) You will find endless amounts amazing little stores with their own characteristic touch. Restaurants that beautifully crafted home comforting foods, and the most cozy cafes in the area. With so much to see and so much to do in #gothenburg. getting lost in quiet streets in #haga should one them.
