Entry #4 in my insect sketchbook. The featured beetle today is the Hercules beetle. This particular beetle is named Dynastes hercules ecuatorianus. Hercules beetles are the longest beetles in the world, reaching lengths up to 180mm. They are nocturnal fliers, with peak activity right before daybreak. They feast on fresh and rotting fruit and use their giant horns to settle mating disputes. The bottom picture is a Hercules larva. The larvae nest and feast on rotting wood.
