The nobles of the assembly, led by Noailles, d'Aiguillon, Beauarnais, Lameth, La Rochefoucauld, declared that if the people had attacked the property of the nobles, it was because that property represented the iniquities of feudalism, that the fault lay there, and that the remedy was not to repress the people but to suppress the institution.

The Great Fear was a wave of peasant riots which occurred in the July and August after the Storming of the Bastille, 14 July 1789. Unsettled by political events, the diminishing supply of grain and rumours of royal and aristocratic retribution many peasants armed themselves and attacked the Chateaux throughout the countryside, destroying the feudal documents at they went. Few people were killed in these events but millions of livres worth of damage had been caused.
