An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Very rarely stories are as they are told years later. There is always a part that is witheld, sometimes out of shame or fear. Sometimes out of love.
So I just finished chapter four of the murderbot diaries - all systems red and I have to say
I get it. I truly see the vision, the parallels between the bartimaeus trilogy and the murderbot diaries.
I'm fitting my teeth around it and getting ready to chew around the similarities and differences.
The themes.
The bitch-ass main character (I'm missing the footnotes but eh)
Anyway, good book

We always (and with very good reason) go back to the incident with the glasses as a formative moment for Nat, but I was struck by the conversation with Mrs Underwood after she gifts him the painting.
And if you work hard and do everything your master tells you, one day you will go there [to the House of Parliament] too, and I will be as proud of you as can be.
Amulet of Samarkand, chapter 8
She's kind, and she's loving. And she still says all these things to a little child.
Perhaps because she truly believes them, or perhaps because it's the quickest way to get him to behave with Underwood so that he may be punished less.
But she says it.
And I do not fault her for not taking Nat and running in a world where her husband, mediocre a magician as he may be, could still summon enough low ranking spirits to find them.
But for saying these words, perhaps I fault her a little bit.
After all,
In return for her affection, Nathaniel rewarded Mrs Underwood with open devotion. He hung on every word and followed her directions in everything.
and so, for the only person who shows care for him,
One day it would be so. He would indeed work hard and make her proud.
How my friend Emka von Doom she called Kain an old grump.😄
