Kouzeh Bakery, 5466 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles (Mid-Wilshire), CA 90036
This is a charming new Iranian/Persian bakery that specializes in sourdough. It feels like everything is carefully made by hand in small batches. The spices and techniques are inspired by Iran/Persia using traditional and family recipes and the finest ingredients.
One case has savory baked goods and the other sweet baked goods. Everything is labeled and the labels even have allergen information. Prices are reasonable.
Sistani: spiced barley and wheat bread with a mix of coriander, nigella, sesame, fennel seeds ($5.65): this was a flat disc. The seeds added flavor and texture. There was a slight tang from the sourdough. It was on the dry side, so I do recommend toasting it to bring out the crispiness. I didn’t eat it till the next day.
Potato ghelefi ($6.80): a soft loaf with a mashed potato and onion filling, lightly flavored with turmeric and chili flakes. Filling, soft, comforting. I thought the spices could have been bolder, but that’s a personal preference.
Cake yazdi ($2.65): a small muffin flavored with rosewater and cardamom. It’s a light cake made with whole grain. I could taste the cardamom. I liked how it wasn’t too sweet.
Go early for the best selection. I heard that the barbari bread sells out early. The bakery is cute. They also have coffee and drinks. You can buy jams and other treats.
Kouzeh Bakery does not make sangak or Persian cookies.
