It was just a normal heist, a useless prize that wasnât Pandora. But on that rainy trip back home, the gem glowed in Kaito's breast pocket, and the next thing he knew, he woke up in the back alley as a cat.
Still, it was fine. No problemo. No biggie wiggie. Because Kaitou KID and Kuroba Kaito had at least twelve lifetimes' worth of experience with far worse things combined; he just needed to swallow his pride and ask Akako for help.
But what Kaito didn't plan was to run into Kudo Shinichi on the streets, or to realize that the detective actually liked cats. And Kaito definitely didnât expect to be brought home, pampered with a warm towel and be caressed under Shinichiâs calloused handsâ
Wait⌠what?
At this point, having to eat fishes was the least of Kaito's concerns.

itâs been a long while HAHAHHA
giving myself no pressure to post anything due to life + work, but at the same time iâm excited to share this one-shot that Iâve started on recently (after a long break)... *hints* my current favourite trope is âdidnât know they were datingâ and not to forget slow burns.
short teaser ahead
-----
It was a normal day. A normal prerequisite briefing before the bigger one with more stakeholders. They met at the cafe behind the Police HQ, Shinichi sipping onto his coffee while Kaitoâs ice chocolate was left on the table, temporarily forgotten as he busied himself reading what Shinichi had brought. But there was something different about this assignment. And when Shinichi realised Kaito had taken around ten seconds longer than usual to finish reading, he figured something could be wrong. Something must be wrong, anyway.
âI understand this could be uncomfortable.â Shinichi placed his mug on the table, watching as Kaito continued scanning the brief in his hand. To bring such important documents out in public would be insane, so all the papers were in codes, one that wouldnât be easily derived except for people who had worked with Shinichi for years.
Kaito glanced up from the rim of the paper. âUncomfortable?âÂ
Even though they had already made sure nobody was near to eavesdrop on their conversation, Shinichi leaned forward and lowered his voice. âThe location.â
Kaitoâs eyes were still locked into Shinichiâs. âThe gay bar?â he said without even checking. âWhat about it?â
Does that not answer it? Shinichi cleared his throat. âYou will be infiltrating in there andâŚâ Shinichi looked away. âI donât want you to do anything that could make you uncomfortable.â
The long silence tempted Shinichi to glance at Kaito again, and when he did, Kaito barked a laugh, shocking Shinichi to jump in his seat.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â Shinichi scowled.
Kaitoâs chuckles had died down, but he was still grinning. âThere's no way in hell Iâd enjoy hanging out with these douchebags. But if youâre worrying about the other thing, itâs fine.â
Imagine Shinichi going to the 24/7 laundromat near his place at 3am to occasionally find Kaito there washing the same few clothes every time but of course Shinichi isnât going to judge because everyone is entitled to wear anything they like, even if itâs some bright white pants, a panda shirt and an amazingly bold red tie.
But Kaito isnât that kind when it comes to commenting Shinichiâs fashion sense, and he occasionally tries to guess about his life from the clothing he sees Shinichi washes.
âDid you recently go on a date? Oh my god Iâm so sorry.â
âFor what?â
âFor that person â having to see you in this hideous blue checkered shirt for an hour or so.âÂ
And they sort of bonded? Obviously? Because this is what happens when two people meet at such an ungodly timing and talk about random crap and exchanging not handphone numbers but sweets and random Sherlock Holmes references.
Bonus: There were times when Kaito didnât come for a prolonged period of time and Shinichi got worried. And when he appeared, his clothes were extremely dirty, or red? Blood? Wait, is that a hole from a gun shot? Excuse me? What the hell is going on?
Imagine Shinichi coming home after work to find Kuroba Kaito lying by his doorsteps bruised, somewhat bloodied, and his last words being âcan I borrow some of your band-aids hahaâ before he fell unconcious in Shinichiâs arms, which wouldnât be all that weird if Shinichi didnât just meet Kaito at Hakubaâs wedding like one week ago, where he spilled orange soda over Shinichiâs favourite suit.
And then when Shinichi woke up the next morning, he found Kaito missing, though on the (untidied) guest bed there was a note with Kaitoâs phone number, along with a thank you message that said Shinichi could always ask Kaito for a favour if he ever needed it.
In all honesty Shinichi wanted nothing more to do with this weird man, but he was relieved he didnât toss the note in the trash because just one week later, Shinichi decided to cash in the favour because he had trouble finding someone to play as his fake boyfriend to enter a gay club and solve a case.
*Cues all the future mishaps between the two that would end them up with more favours being exchanged... which might make this fic be a bunch of encounters as they started to realize itâs fun and amazing to have each other in their lives ahaha yes thatâs about it.

âHey.â Kaito waved a hand over Shinichiâs face. âUh, are you okay?â
The glaze in Shinichiâs eyes disappeared, but his eyes werenât the only window to his soul. The lines on his forehead, the arch of his lips... they were more than enough signs for Kaito to know whatever that was brooding Shinichi hadnât quite gone away yet.
âIâm fine,â Shinichi said. âItâs just... you remind me of someone I know.â
Kaito blinked.
Normally when people made that sort of statement, the reply would be to ask âWho?â.  But Kaito wasnât sure â not because he wanted to retort something witty for the sake if it â he wasnât sure if he was prepared enough to hear Shinichiâs answer.
Still, considering his supposed identity, he decided that option was the only way.
âWho?â Kaito asked, barely mixing some curiosity to cover the dread in his voice.
Shinichi was silent for a long while, enough for Kaito to think the conversation was dropped or that heâd fallen asleep, which was fine, either way. But Shinichi stirred, and he lifted his head to stare at the ceiling above them, looking thoughtful.
âAn imbecile,â Shinichi finally said.
Kaito made a face. âAre you calling me an imbecile or do I remind you of an imbecile?â
Imagine Kaito, just changed to his citizen-self, became a witness to the shooting and possible âmurderâ of Kaitou Kid that happened at his heist ten minutes ago. It wouldnât pose much of a problem if Shinichi wasnât assigned to be Kaitoâs bodyguard for the entire witness-protection program. And now Kaito is stuck with him.
Or rather Shinichi is stuck with Kaito, because the last thing Shinichi wanted was to spend his time with this obnoxious yet, um, witty man when he could be investigating (and avenging?) Kaitou Kidâs death. (Though Shinichi would rather believe that Kid is alive... That guy is a Phantom after all.)
Cue all of Shinichiâs accidental confessions and Kaitoâs inner struggles as these two live under the same roof for an indefinite amount of time.
Bonus: imagine if thereâs only one bed lol.

Kaito unintentionally invited Shinichi to watch his performance at the hospital.
For the past year, Kaito had been volunteering more times than he had combined when Aoko was still... around. It might seem Kaito wouldn't have any problems when he'd held so many of these performances already, but there was still one issue he had yet to solve.
Being in the hospital setting, Kaito couldnât use his doves so that would reduce the number of tricks he could do, but that was never his concern; he'd already curated new tricks over the weekends and practiced last night, and Kaito just had to work a little on the timing since it was likely he'd overrun the thirty minutes session... but that was not the current concern either.
Sitting on the couch in his living room, Kaito stared at his trembling hands.
They had been like this the whole morning.
A flap of wings and a dove landed on the armrest. Being the most intrusive and shameless dove Kaito ever owned, he knew it was Tamago before he had to look.
âYou just had your breakfast,â Kaito reminded.
Tamago didnât answer. It continued to look at him, its red, beady eyes emitting a sense of curiousness that only Kaito would recognise.
Ignoring his companion, Kaito slowly clenched his fists, willing them to stop shaking. For consolation, at least Kaito's situation didn't get worse and had been improving over the months; comparing to the first few weeks when he returned as a volunteer, it wasnât just his hands but his whole body that would be shaking, and there were a few times when the mere thoughts of going to the hospital could set his lungs on fire.
Fireâ
Tamago cooed.
Kaito sighed and leaned back to lay his head on the couch. âIâm fine.â
If it was even possible, Kaito wouldâve thought he saw Tamago rolled its eyes.
Kaito glanced at his clenched fists. They were still trembling, but luckily there were still a couple of hours to go before he had to leave his house. Maybe by then, he should beâ
Kaitoâs ear twitched as he straightened on his couch and glanced towards the direction of his kitchen. He swore he heard the faint sound of a door opening.
And now there was the sound of the door closed.
Kaito sprinted towards his kitchen and peered through his windows that faced his backyard. If only the previous owner of the house had constructed an extra window pane on the right, Kaito would have a perfect view of Shinichiâs backyard too. Instead, Kaito had to press his face near the glass and crane his neck out, just barely catching a glimpse of Shinichiâs empty-looking backyard. But it wasnât empty, per se.
Shinichi was there.
âHuh?â Kaito raised an eyebrow. âWhat is he doing?â he wondered aloud. Kaito would rather believe Shinichi was there to bury a dead body than to take care of his tragically, overcrowding plants.
Kaito had no plans to be a detective, so he grabbed a watering-can under the sink as a disguise and headed out to get the direct answer he wanted.
Shinichi turned at the exact second Kaito stepped onto his backyard.
Now from a better angle, Kaito could see what Shinichi was really up to: He was holding a mug, which Kaito dared to bet his precious card gun that it was filled with coffee. So he was drinking with a perfect view of his dying plants. Truly a wonderful experience it must be.
âGood morning, neighbour.â Kaito put up a hand. âWhat coincidental timing.â He pointed down at his watering can, hoping Shinichi would buy his excuse for his appearance.
It seemed Shinichi did. â...Morning,â he muttered.
Maybe Kaito should have waited a minute later before coming out, just so the caffeine would kick in for Shinichi or somethingâ Hah, would that have mattered to Kaito anyway? He answered his own thoughts by strolling towards the fence and closing their distance, feeling carefree indeed.
Shinichi made no move to go closer to the fence, though he didnât make any move to go back into his house too. But the most shocking thing of all was that Shinichi spoke first when Kaito finally reached the fence. âI never knew youâre a morning person,â the detective said, sounding stumped as if this was a case he was trying to solve.
âYouâre right, Iâm not.â Kaito propped an elbow over the fence. âItâs just that I have something on later so I woke up early for it.â
Shinichi raised an eyebrow. It was either Kaitoâs words or the caffeine had finally kicked in; he looked much more awake now. âWhat do you have?â
Funny enough, Kaito didnât realise his hands had stopped shaking until they started again. He was glad that Shinichi could only see his elbow from his view; Kaitoâs hand was hanging over the side of his own fence.Â
Really, Kaito should have expected Shinichiâs question...
Ah, the feeling of regret. How nostalgic.
Kaito could lie, no doubt; it was one of his many talents to make his answer turn out to be a joke without trying. But this time he knew there was no point to lie. Not because Shinichi was smart enough to call him out, Kaito believed Shinichi couldnât care less about the truth too.
âI have a performance at a hospital,â Kaito said.
âOh.â
âFeel free to come visit. No entry fee, obviously,â Kaito smirked. And it was like he was blabberingâfrom the ironic nervousness of hoping his anxiety wasnât going to be triggeredâas he told Shinichi the time and which hospital it was before the detective could even say if he want to come or not.
Shinichi simply hummed to the information and went on to drink his coffee silently, which Kaito didnât know what it exactly meant, but it wasnât until ten seconds later than Kaito realised Shinichi wasnât going to speak anymore. As expected.
And stupidly, at the eleventh second, it somehow occurred to Kaito and made him wonder why he even approached Shinichi in the first place. To annoy the detective early in the morning? Like... a distraction? Yeah, that seemed like the only plausible reason. And if so, Kaito should start to think of his exit to end this; this was dragging a little too much.
Luckily, it was also one of his many talents in making it seemed effortless like a joke, too.
âEh, detective. Can you hear that?â
Shinichi glanced up from his mug and stared at Kaito. âHear what?â
âThe cries from your plants because theyâre dying.â Kaito pointed at Shinichiâs pots before hiding his hand back behind the fence (they werenât shaking again, but just in case).
Shinichi rolled his eyes. âLike Iâve said, theyâre still well and growing.â
âLike Iâve said, itâs actually overcrowding and that means bad.â Kaito shook his head.
â...Hey, did you hear something?â
Kaito blinked. Was Shinichi trying to play some kind of Uno reverse-card ploy at him? âWhat?â Kaito asked warily.
Shinichi snorted. âItâs the sound of your roses crying because they're dying from thirst and not growing, thanks to you.â
Kaito had heard and withstood many kind of insults (courtesy of Hakuba for fulfilling some on the list), but no one had yet to mock about his roses before. Now that Shinichi was the first to check that box, Kaito finally knew what it was like, and indeed, it was ridiculously funny.
Not true, but funny.
Kaito made a show by laughing and wiping an invisible tear off his eye. âYouâre hilarious, detective.â
Shinichi watched in disdain. âIâm done with you," he said, briefly checking his watch before chugging the remaining coffee. "I'm going to work."
âYes, justice and murder awaits.â Kaito waved with the watering can in his hand. "Goodbye."
Shinichi didnât return the farewell, as per usual, and left for the door to his kitchen before closing it behind him. Kaito could see Shinichiâs shadow moving back and forth in the kitchen from his window, but only until Kaito heard the sound of Shinichiâs car starting in front, he finally dared to allow his face to relax and his plastered smile fell.
Leaning against the fence, Kaito braced himself and looked at his hands.
For now, they werenât trembling anymore.
// âYou came,â (Kuroba) said, his statement sounded more like a question. It wouldnât be as absurd if it wasnât Kuroba that invited him to come in the first place.
âYou asked me to,â Shinichi muttered, clearly remembering the exact moment when Kuroba did: With a propped elbow over their fence, he'd disturbed Shinichiâs quiet morning and told him he was free to come to today's event. //
