AN: Oh, look. That plan I mentioned with four big plot points for 'chapter two'? Yeah, it turned into four separate chapters after all. How⌠very not surprising. đ
Previous Chapter AO3
. o O o .
When my phone pings with a new message, I flinch. I canât help it. Itâs been like this for three days now, ever since Violet was here again and I made an utter fool of myself.
With every message I receive, I expect her to call me out on my inexcusable behaviour. That Iâm acting unprofessional if sheâs being gentle or that Iâm a creep if sheâs being brutally honest. I donât think sheâd cancel the order, not after my official account received a generous down payment from a Dain Aetos. But she could refuse to meet in person again, and I couldnât even blame her for it. Maybe it would be better that way anyway. No more chances for me to get entangled even deeper in this mess.
Studiously, I keep kneading a fresh batch of gum paste and ignore both the phone and my ever-spiralling thoughts. They canât lead anywhere anyway.
After a few more minutes, the paste is smooth enough even for Liamâs taste, and I stow it away into the fridge, wrapped up air-tight, of course. At the rate Liam is currently modelling one flower after the other, weâll need this new batch by tomorrow.
âDo you need help here?â I ask as I slide into the bench opposite of him, the sturdy work table at the back of the bakery between us covered with modelling tools and countless flowers already drying.
Liamâs lips twitch into a grin, his eyes never leaving the large rose heâs working on. âSo desperate for distraction? But sure. Could you prepare a few more petals for this one?â
I quickly check my phone, the message I got earlier, and am relieved to find itâs just another customer confirming an appointment. âNo idea what you mean,â I say, absentmindedly placing the phone onto the table next to me.
Liam snorts, knowing how little I enjoy this fiddly work. Give me dough and fillings and let me experiment with aromas and spices. Let me construct a cake with many layers and frosting, built for perfection. I even enjoy decorating the final cake with fondant, more frosting, or various decorations. But making these filigrane decorations? Not my favourite part, and I gladly leave this to Liam. But the least I can do is help as best I can, so I reach for the gum paste the rich colour of orange peel and do my best not to mess it up.
For a while we work in companionable silence, and as always, Iâm amazed at how easy Liam makes it look, how realistically his flowers seem, as if they would move if a breeze were to blow by, and how accurately he colours the paste accordingly to the palette Violet gave me, an almost pinkish salmon hue this time. There really is no question about who of us is the artist.
My phone pings again with another message, and even though I see directly that itâs just a confirmation for a delivery, I flinch again. At some point, I will have to face her judgement. Itâs only a matter of time.
âIs everything okay with you?â
âSure,â I reply without looking over to him. Heâd see right through me. He probably does, anyway. âWhy shouldnât I be okay?â
âOh, I donât know,â Liam drawls, pushing the stem of the next finished rose into the styrofoam block. âMaybe because youâve been incredibly tense and nervous lately. Even more so than usual. I know that somethingâs bothering you, okay? Donât even try to deny it.â
He really knows me too well.
I grunt, hoping beyond hope that heâll drop the topic. I donât want to talk about this whole mess, wouldnât even know what to tell him at this point. Itâs all just so stupid. Who ever gets a severe crush like this on a customer just from a couple of short interactions? Ridiculous.
âXaden?â
I sigh and open my mouth, still not sure what to tell him, when the entrance bell to the front room rings.
âI gotta take that,â I say, too relieved about the interruption to wonder who might be coming into the shop. Thereâs been no appointment today. Or was there? Iâm not even sure anymore. Gods, constantly thinking about Violet Sorrengail is really messing with me.
Which becomes even more obvious when I enter the front room and see her standing there by the door when Iâm absolutely sure it canât be real.
Iâm such a mess.
I close my eyes and count to five, slowly, giving my mind time to catch up with reality. But when I open my eyes again, sheâs still standing there. Her hair perfectly styled into a messy-looking braid thatâs hanging over her shoulder, a light dust of make-up making her eyes shine, her lips even more inviting than ever as she once again contemplates all the different cakes with a little smile on her face.
Gods, Iâm so fucked.
But at least she came here again and she also doesnât seem to be angry, a little voice in my head tries to calm me. Isnât that a good thing?
Swallowing, I quickly rebuild my composure before stepping closer to the counter, into her viewing field. âViolet?â I ask, my voice only slightly quivering. âDid I forget an appointment?â
At my words, she pivots toward me, the smile on her face growing even brighter. âHey, Xaden. No, ah, we didnât have an appointment. But I just got the final list and I thought Iâd stop by to discuss it? If you have the time now?â
I blink, a bit stunned despite her perfectly normal words. So, she doesnât hate me? Doesnât think I was overstepping with how obvious my interest for her must have been? Or didnât she even notice? Fuck, I wish I could look into her head, know what sheâs thinking. âYeah, sure, now is fine. But you could have just sent it over as well.â
I gesture over to the sitting area, but she shakes her head.
âI donât have time to stay long and I⌠Well, I was going for a walk anyway, so I thought⌠why not stop by in person?â She gives me another heart-stopping smile and brushes a strand of hair behind her ear. And in the light reflecting off the floor, it almost looks like thereâs a blush on her cheeks. But no, I must be imagining that. Itâs just the light. It canât be real.
Wordlessly, I nod, keeping my eyes on the sheet of paper she places on the counter between us and my hands well out of reach of hers. I canât afford slipping up again just because sheâs standing less than a metre away from me.
âSo, the allergies first, Iâd say. Dainâs allergic to nuts, of course. I could have told you that as well.â
She chuckles, shaking her head, but I refuse to look at her. Because I know if I do, Iâll lose it. My head is just too full with thoughts like âSheâs back!â to really comprehend much else.
âAnd then someone from the in-laws is apparently allergic to apples?â Violet shrugs, thankfully unaware of my thoughts. âBut thatâs it there. Ah, and Dainâs mum apparently requested not to use any sugar substitutes. Donât ask me from which new conspiracy theory that stems.â
âNoted,â I say with a slight smirk, keeping my composed front easier now that weâre back on professional topics.
But also, apparently itâs not just her future father-in-law she doesnât like, as it seems. Honestly, doesnât she have any close friends whoâre in the right position to talk her out of this wedding? Because if I can see this is not right for her, then⌠Too bad Iâm definitely not in the right position to change her mind, though. I mustnât. And who am I to judge her decisions anyway.
âNo apples and no⌠uhm, how severely is Dain allergic to nuts? Should I just keep all crunchy brittle and such away from this cake, or are any traces of nuts in, for example, a chocolate frosting a problem already?â
At this, I do look up at her again, after all. I really canât avoid looking at her for the next two months, so I better get used to it. But, damn, does she look pretty. Even prettier than the last times she was here, it seems. More awake. Happier. Almost glowing even with that true smile on her face.
âNo, small traces of nuts arenât an issue. Itâs just whole and untreated walnuts and sometimes hazelnuts that can cause a reaction, but itâs never been life-threatening and chocolate in general never caused a problem.â
I nod. âOkay, that makes things easier.â I read through the following list of possible fillings, sometimes with names behind them. Theyâre good solid suggestions, enough to pick fromâbut somehow something is missing. Iâm usually a pretty good judge of character when it comes to which cake is someoneâs favourite. And even though I donât really know yet which one I would have picked for Violet⌠none of these really match. âWell, I can work with these,â I say nonetheless.
Violet lets out a relieved little sigh. âThatâs good.â She pushes the list toward me, then steps away, ready to leave.
âDo you want to see a few first flowers for your cake?â
The question is out of my mouth before I can think, and I wish I could slap a hand over my lips to stuff it back in. Yes, I know I donât want her to leave already. But do I really need to make a fool of myself again?
Grimacing, Violet throws me an apologetic smile. âIâm sorry, I really wish I could. But Iâm just on my lunch break and really need to head back.â
Right. She probably has a job somewhere. A whole life, for Dunneâs sake, with a fiancĂŠ and all. And I just keep being an idiot over and over again.
âBut⌠I could stop by tomorrow evening? If that doesnât mess with your schedule? Because Iâd really like to see them.â
This time, it is on me to smile. âYeah, tomorrow evening is fine.â
âPerfect,â she grins. âSee you tomorrow, then.â
âTomorrow,â I nod.
Violet leaves, but even after sheâs gone, long after sheâs out of my sight, I still canât stop grinning. She doesnât hate me. Maybe, she really didnât notice my slip-up, after all. Or sheâs used to people falling for her left and right. Wouldnât surprise me with how gorgeous she is.
I take another heartbeat or three to bask in the lightness her visit left in my chest, that fluttering something when she smiled at me, then I head back into the bakery. There are lots of flowers waiting to be made.
As I sit down again, Liam studies me with a strange look. âOkay, now, you have to tell me whatâs up with you.â
âWhat do you mean?â I reply, biting my lip. In my mind, I still can see Violet, hear her laughter. Surely heâs not wondering about me being overly tense anymore?
Liam puts aside the half-finished rose, one in a soft apricot colour this time, and raises both eyebrows at me. âXaden, youâre smiling. I know you broody and serious and troubled and anxious. I mean, itâs not that I havenât seen you happy, either. But when youâre visibly happy like this, thereâs always a good reason for it. So shoot. Whatâs up.â
Snorting, I shake my head. He really knows me too well. And heâs right, isnât he? Iâm happy.
Iâm happy when there really is no reason to feel that way.
My shoulders drop as do the corners of my mouth, the lightness in my chest evaporating. Whatâs the point in being happy? Sure, Violet doesnât hate me, which makes working for her easier. And, of course, I like working with her, itâs easy, fun, simple. I like being with her, around her, like talking to her, listening to her, looking at her.
But thatâs the problem. I like it too much. I like it too much when thereâs no path that could lead to more. Because I wish there was, no point in denying it. But there never will be.
My lips twitch up into a smile again, but itâs a sad one now. âItâs nothing, Liam. Nothing.â
. o O o .
Since Violet didnât specify when she would be here, I spent a good time waiting for her in the front room. I probably have other things to do, but somehow I donât care. All that matters is not missing even one moment of her being here.
When she arrives, my face lights up, I just canât help it, and I walk to her directly to greet her. Thereâs that beautiful smile on her face when she sees me, her eyes gleaming with happiness. She lifts her arm as if to hug me in greeting, and for a brief second, I reason with myself that itâs perfectly fine to hug her if thatâs what she wants. Everything to make the customer feel welcome. But fuck it. I want to hug her. No other reason needed.
All but brimming with joy and uncalled-for excitement, I lean down to accommodate herâwhen she brings her hand to the back of my neck and twists her head just so that our lips meet.
For the fraction of a second, I freeze, too stunned to react. Sheâs kissing me! But then my eyes flutter shut and I give in.
I tilt my head to meet her at a better angle, shuddering at her little mewl as I kiss her back. My lips move with hers, sliding, pressing. My hands landed on her shoulders but now one is moving up to her neck to pull her in even deeper while the other is sliding down, along the curves of her sides, finally settling on her tiny waist. Amari help me, she feels so good beneath my hands, her kiss so sweet. I pull her closer and feel her smile against my mouth before she parts my lips with her own, her tongue seeking mine. I canât help it and groan into her mouth. This is everything I wanted, everything I dreamed of, itâsâ
With a start, I wake up. My eyes are wide, my heart pounding in my chest as the memories of my dream settle in my conscious mind. What the fuck
Unable to lie still for even a second, I all but jump out of my bed and head to my bathroom. The water is icy, but I donât care, and only after my face is dripping and Iâm fully awake do my thoughts start to make sense again.
It was just a dream.
It wasnât real.
Violet didnât kiss me.
But, fuck, do I wish it was real.
Sinking down onto the edge of the tub, I bury my face in my hand and let out a low curse. âWhat is wrong with me?â I mutter to myself. âSheâs engaged, for fuckâs sake. I canât fall for her, dammit!â
But thatâs exactly whatâs happening, whether I want it or not. Whether itâs sensible or not. My shoulders slump and a short desperate laugh escapes me as I canât fight the truth any longer. Iâm falling for her, hard. And no amount of logical arguing is going to get me out of this.
. o O o .
In a way, admitting my feelings to myself makes things easier, I decide as I pick a few of the flowers Liam made and arrange them on a styrofoam stand. Or at least I hope it does. Yesterday, the logical part of my brain was dreading seeing her again this afternoon. Nothing good could come from this, after all. And at the rate sheâs ripping away my self-control, who knows what might happen the next time I slip up.
But by now⌠Itâs not that these thoughts arenât still there. Itâs just that⌠without having to fight how I feel, with letting myself feel what I feel, I think it will be easier to keep my interactions with her at an acceptable level. Iâm falling for her and I can fight these feelings just as little as I can change that thereâs no future for us. All I can do is somehow deal with the whole mess.
So Iâll just roll with it. Because thereâs also another part of my brain, the part thatâs just excited, just looking forward to seeing her again. To spend a little time with her. To enjoy her voice and her smiles for however long I can.
Deep down, I know this is not the most healthy way to deal with my feelings. But itâs the only solution I can come up with.
. o O o .
When I enter the front room, sheâs already sitting in her usual space, visibly content. Once again, I take a short moment to just enjoy seeing her like this, a moment to look at her unrestrained before I let her notice me. And I already feel lighter, more in control. Nothing weird will happen while sheâs here, I swear to myself. And I always keep my promises.
âHey,â I greet her, my defences already built up against her greeting smile. And to my relief, itâs indeed easier on me this time.
âHey to you, too. And thanks again for meeting with me. Iâm not keeping you from work, am I?â
âNo, donât worry. From Wednesday to Sunday, Iâm busy preparing the fresh cakes for the weddings, but since most of them are during weekends, Monday and Tuesday are usually calmer.â
Violet nods. âMakes sense.â
âDo you want something to drink today?â Again, I know itâs just a normal question, just the usual politeness towards a customer. It doesnât matter that it might mean more to me, as long as I keep my emotions in this tight little bubble.
Out of habit, I turn to start the coffee machine when Violet replies, a little hesitant. âCould I⌠maybe get a hot chocolate again? Honestly, Iâve never had one that tasted so delicious.â
The smile tugging at my lips is real as I nod. âSure. Just give me a minute or two.â Itâs still stupid, to grant her this special treatment. But I can enjoy the simple fact that she likes something I prepared, canât I? Itâs innocent, nothing meaningful.
When I return to her, I hold her mug in one hand and the stand with the pre-picked flowers I prepared earlier in the other. Thatâs what she came here for, after all, despite me offering to show her yesterday only having been an excuse.
âMmh, thank you,â she hums, taking the mug and inhaling deeply. âIâve been thinking about this for days now. The hot chocolate.â She takes a sip and sighs. âEven better than I remembered.â
I smile again. âYouâre welcome.â I like the thought that she thought of me as well, for whatever reason.
Violet takes another sip, visibly getting comfortable, and I donât fight the happiness this sight brings me anymore. Whatâs the point? Obviously, sheâs happy now. Whatever bothered her before about her wedding must be out of the way now. Which is good. Iâm glad for her. Nothing could have developed between us anyway, so I ignore that sting.
âAnd these are the flowers you made?â Her eyes are on the petal paste roses, filled with clear awe. âThey look so real.â
âThey do, donât they?â I say, not hiding the pride I feel. âAnd yeah, we made them. Well, mostly my coworker, to be honest. My area of expertise is more what goes into the cake.â
âGlad to hear youâre at least honest to her,â a voice calls from behind me, and I flinch. Why is Liam back already?
I turn in my seat, now trying harder to suppress my emotions. If Liam sees how annoyed I am about him being early, Iâll never hear the end of it. âIâd never take credit thatâs not mine.â
Liam cocks his head, making a show of thinking about my words, and then nods. âFair enough.â
With a small sigh, I turn back toward Violet. Iâm a little disappointed that I donât get to enjoy this meeting as I planned to, but itâs probably better this way. With Liam around as a buffer, Iâm definitely not going to slip up again. âViolet, this is Liam, my co-worker.â
âAnd roommate, foster brother, and general life saver. At your service.â He makes a show of bowing towards Violet, and I canât help but roll my eyes a little. Heâs such a flirt. But maybe, thatâs good. Makes our interactions lighter, easier.
Violet chuckles. âNice to meet you, Liam. Iâm Violet.â
âViolet is the one who ordered the cake with the orange roses,â I explain, waving at the examples in their stand. âWhich is why sheâs here. So see a few first samples.â
âI see,â Liam drawls, giving me side eyes. He knows damn well that a meeting like this itâs not typical.
âWhat are you doing here already, by the way?â I ask, stirring the conversation away from any possible follow-up questions. âShouldnât you still have classes?â
âClasses got cancelled because our prof called in sick. Iâm attending art school,â he explains for Violet. âI only help out here in my free time and because I can get credits for my courses for modelling some of these decorations. And because Xaden here would be entirely lost without me.â He nudges my shoulder with his fist.
âThanks, asshole,â I mutter but canât help smiling. Heâs not wrong, after all.
Violet eyes us with a tiny smirk. âI see. So, youâre the one I really need to talk to here? Regarding the decorations?â
Liamâs shoulders square and a wide grin spreads across his face. âAbsolutely. Xaden canât even tell the difference between pinkish orange and salmon colour. So if youâre here to talk about the finer details for your cake, Iâm your man.â
Violet laughs, soft but real, and I canât be annoyed at Liam, not when this is how he makes her react. My happiness is not whatâs important here, only hers.
âWell then,â Violet says, her chin resting on her propped-up hand. âWhat do you, as an expert, think of our plan for this cake? Any thoughts?â
At that, I snort. Liam has always thought about how people want their cakes.
Grinning, Liam sinks into the chair between us. âIâm so glad you asked. Are you sure you only want roses? Because no matter how realistically I make these, on their own they will always look weird and artificial. Now, if youâd let me add some greenery and filler flowers, though? Thatâs what makes the decoration really pop.â He holds up a hand to halt her protest and I let him because I agree. Weâve had this conversation a hundred times already, after all. Without customers, though. âI know what you want to say. The decoration is supposed to stick to the signature colour palette. But trust me, adding greenery doesnât interfere with that. Think of the bridal bouquet and the general flower decorations. Those will come with greenery, too, and nobody will think it looks weird or out of place. Why should it be different for the flower decoration on the cake? Come here, let me show you what I mean.â
He gets up and beckons Violet to follow him, which she does after throwing me a little glance. I settle back in my seat and watch as Liam stirs her through the room, showing her different examples, some simply with petal paste leaves, others with babyâs breath or other flowers woven into the decoration.
And I find myself⌠feeling content. Seeing her following Liamâs explanations with true interest, the little smiles she throws at me in between, her honest laughter filling the shop every now and then. Maybe this wasnât how I expected this meeting to go, but thatâs okay. Because I truly could get used to this, just having her around, just for the joy of it.
What does it matter that nothing can come of it when I can simply enjoy the little things? Like how her entire face lights up when she smiles, the blue outshining the amber in her hazel eyes. The curve of her lips and the way her hair shimmers when it reflects the light. Not to mention her witty comments and the inner strength she has to posses for going through with something despite the difficulties.
Itâll only last for less than two months, but until then, I want to enjoy every moment I can. Maybe itâs stupid, my heart telling me it would never be enough.
But it has to be enough so maybe, it will.
. o O o .
AN: Yeah, Xaden, that's the way to go. Get used to having her around. That's totally not going to blow in your face...
(PS: Since it sounds better and also fits better to the word I'd use in my native tongue, I replaced 'gum paste' with the alternative phrase 'petal paste', in case anyone was wondering.)

For the most part, the beginning of autumn is usually your favorite time of the year. When the tree leaves begin to yellow and the air gains a significantly colder bite, this signifies the end of pit stains and sweaty thighs and the start of sweater paws and chapped lips. Above all, you are most excited, of course, for an excuse to gorge yourself on steaming mugs of hot chocolate, paired with delicious mountains of warm gooey brownies.
For the most part, these are all things that often get you excited for the coming chill. What you do not think to remember, however, is that while these seasonal changes bring more good than bad, there still remains a little snag: a small oversight, if you will. As businesses all over the world begin the annual transition to the colder months, so does your favorite bakery across the street from your university. After all, summer ingredients grow scarcer as the year nears its end, so itâs understandable for bakeries to switch up their menu to keep up with both the supply and demand.
What does any of this have to do with anything? Well, long story shortâ
Your favorite strawberry shortcake milkshake is about to get phased out. No, scratch thatâitâs already been phased out, right from under your very nose, no less!
You shouldnât have been surprised, really. You have always known it was a specialty drink; your best friend had even been the one to introduce it to you just near the end of your summer classes:
âThis is Euphoria Bakery,â Namjoon had said with a smile, waving cheerily at the two boys manning the till. You heard him chuckle in amusement when your eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, staring longingly at the sweet treats and baked goods lining the display case.
Namjoon had stolen your attention away, however, when he pointed to the chalkboard menu on the wall. As it turned out, the bakery also doubled as a cafe, serving the usual coffees and teas while also making the occasional specialty drink for different seasons or holidays. The chalkboard was decorated beautifully, the menu items written out in neat cursive with tiny little doodles littering its margins. On one of the boards, there was a new drink item being advertised in bold pink lettersâa great summer treat!âor so it said.
âJungkook-ssi, can you get me and Y/N a strawberry shortcake milkshake? Extra whipped cream for me, please!â Namjoon called out to one of the boys, startling the younger of the two. The boy, Jungkook, must have been busy fiddling with the cash register that he hadnât noticed your arrival.
âN-Namjoon-hyung? Sorry, I was just busy counting the moneyââ Jungkook stopped short in his speech, his tongue getting caught in his mouth when his eyes landed directly on you. He had made a strangled sound, like he had swallowed his spit too quickly and was struggling to regain his composure. âH-Hello?â
You realized belatedly that he must have been greeting you, as you had been distracted by his fidgetiness. His nervousness was cute, if a little bit contagious; you couldnât help feeling anxious too, like your heart was missing every other beat, even though you had no reason to be. âHello! My name is Y/N. Itâs my first time coming here, but Namjoon says your new summer menu item is really good? I wanted to try it out for myself.â
Jungkook nodded, still staring wide-eyed at you as if in a trance. You expected him to start... well. You werenât an expert on how bakeries or cafes are run, but you were pretty sure he shouldâve started doing something after you had spoken, perhaps ring up your order on the register, or start working on your drinks. Instead, heâs still frozen in place, like heâd somehow short-circuited within the last two minutes.
It seemed you werenât the only one who noticed his odd behavior because the man working with him suddenly pushed Jungkook to the side, a brief smirk flashing across his face before it was quickly replaced by a more subdued, professional smile.
âSorry about him. Heâs usually my best baker, but sometimes he can get a little... distracted when heâs confronted with sweet things,â the man said nonchalantly, but it seemed that his innocent-sounding comment had embarrassed Jungkook greatly.
âJimin-hyung!â Jungkook whined, stomping his foot not unlike a bunny. If you squinted a little bit, you could definitely see the resemblance.
Namjoon, who had been quietly watching everything unfold, chose that moment to pipe up. âOh, I see. I didnât know you had a type, but after thinking about itââ Namjoon shot a surreptitious glance at you, before turning back to Jungkook with a teasing grin, ââI can definitely see why.â
At the time, you had no idea what was going on, mostly confused as to why Jungkook had suddenly become so red-faced while Namjoon and Jimin giggled like a couple of high school girls. It seemed like you were somehow the main reason for his embarrassment, so you were quick to poke Namjoon in the stomach, effectively silencing him.
âHey! Stop teasing the poor boy. Heâs just being nice,â you said, pointing a soft smile back at Jungkook. âSorry about him. Iâm sure youâre an excellent baker, judging from how wonderful and cute all these cakes on the display look.â Somehow, your praise had only made Jungkookâs cheeks brighten even further. He cleared his throat as if to say something in response, before changing his mind and scuttling away to the back room instead.
âIâm going to start making your milkshake! D-donât mind me!â He called out from behind the door, causing Jimin to finally break down into raucous giggles, nearly doubling over from his own mirth.
âAish, that kid. He never learns, huhâŚâ Jimin sighed, but the smile on his face is kindâthe sort of fond look an older brother might have for his kid brother. He turned back to you and Namjoon with that lingering softness as he rang the two of you up, before chatting idly with you as you waited for Jungkook to finish making your drinks.
âIâve never seen you around, Y/N-ssi. Jungkookâsorry, I meant I definitely wouldâve noticed you if I did. You go to the same university as Namjoon-ssi, right?â Jimin asked, flipping a pen between his fingers with incredible dexterity. You were slightly distracted by that, faintly jealous of how his short fingers could somehow manage such a feat.
âIâyeah, I do. Iâm assuming youâre also a student?â
âYep. I actually met Namjoon-ssi when we took that one music theory class together. I was handing out flyers for this bakery after class and he happened to be one of the first people to actually come,â he said, winking at Namjoon. You watched with much interest when your friend turned a faint shade of pink, his hand coming up behind his neckâa signature tick of his whenever he was feeling shy or nervous.
âI-It was nothing⌠I mean, your seasonal drinks are always so good! I remember your old snowman-shaped donuts with the raspberry filling? I still dream of it sometimes,â Namjoon sighed, eyes going glassy for a moment.
Jimin laughed, his eyes crinkling into cute little crescents. âOh, stop it! I remember how youâd come here even after we stopped serving that donut and youâd beg us to make them again.â
âAnd yet you never did, even though I know you have the ingredients to make them,â Namjoon pouted, but thereâs endearment dancing in his expression.
You chuckled, shaking your head in disbelief. âI never pegged Namjoon as a sweet-tooth guy, so this is honestly all a very big surprise to me. I should be pumped for this milkshake then, huh? Hopefully, you arenât just hyping it up and Iâll end up disappointed.â
Before either Namjoon or Jimin could retort, Jungkook had reappeared from the back room with two large cups in hand, almost tripping over his untied apron string but managing to get to the counter in one piece.
âHere you go. I hope you wonât be disappointed when you try it,â he said, gaze averted downwards when he hands you your cup. Your fingers grazed each other for a second, nearly causing both of you to drop the drink like it was on fire.
âS-sorry,â you laughed it off, feeling your ears get a little red from your blunder. You pointedly ignored Namjoonâs arched brow, no doubt enjoying your sudden shyness. Without waiting for him to get his own cup, you casually tear off the straw wrapper and take your first sip of the drink.
âSo?â Jungkook asked after a while, watching with bated breath as you take a good gulp of the milkshake. âHow is it? Is it worth the hype?â You donât speak for a moment, further aggravating the two bakers as you carefully chewed on the bits of strawberry in the drink.
âThisââ you said, speaking slowly for increased dramatic effect. You could hear Namjoon groan beside you, used to your need for unnecessary anticipation. Even as you paused for a moment longer, you could already feel the smile creeping up your face, unable to completely hide your giddiness. ââis fantastic. Show-stopping. Best thing since sliced bread! I could live on this shit alone.â
Jungkook released a breath he didnât know he had been holding, chuckling in relief as you began to completely devour the treat in mere minutes. âIâm⌠really glad you like it,â he said with a wide, toothy grin. You were so immersed in your drink that you missed the way he sighed softly, hand gently cradling his chest where his heart would be.
Namjoon had taken his own sip as well, sighing dreamily as the creamy and sweet flavor overtook his palate. âTruly the best drink in existence. If I was a Twitch streamer or some shit, Iâd promote this regularly for free.â
His comment made Jimin giggle softly, but his gaze is trained on something else entirely. âIâm flattered, but maybe donât promote Y/Nâs cup, over here. We donât typically have strawberries and hearts doodled all over our cups,â he said, smirking slyly.
Lo and behold, your cup did have small doodles littering its sides whereas Namjoonâs was just a plain white paper cup. âOh,â you said, blushing furiously when you finally noticed. Your flush was nothing compared to the one on Jungkookâs cheeks, however. The two of you refused to make eye contact after that, both of you trying (and failing) to silence the amused snickers of your respective friends.
Despite that slightly embarrassing (and heartwarming) experience, that had marked the start of your love for the tiny bakery and their special strawberry shortcake milkshake. You returned to Euphoria Bakery as often as you could throughout the summer, even going to visit it without Namjoon most of the time. You would even occasionally go out of your way to visit the bakery, even after your summer classes had ended and there was really no reason for you to be around the area.
It also didnât hurt that the boy behind the counter was especially cute, with his big doe eyes and melodic laughter that always got your heart beating erratically in your chest. It hadnât taken long for you to admit to yourself that you had a not-so-tiny crush and every visit to the bakery only made you fall deeper for him.
Namjoon has assured you that Jungkook clearly has a crush on you too, but youâre quick to shut him down. It is one thing to be shy and awkward around a girl and another to have a crush on the aforementioned girl. As you visited the bakery more and more, you do notice that Jungkook is more reserved when it comes to other female clientele, although, dare you hope? He does seem a little bit more⌠nervous, when he talks to you, but that could be your lovesick eyes playing tricks on you.
Never mind the fact that he only ever seems to leave cute doodles on your cups alone, but that could just be a coincidence, right? After all, he can hardly hold a conversation with you when you try to speak with him, always eager to rush to the backroom to make your drink.
Your visits usually consist of making idle chit chat with Jimin after greeting both him and Jungkook. The younger boy often dips the moment he sees you through the glass door, automatically going to prepare your favorite summer treat without even having to ask for your order. He never stays to stick around long enough to make conversation, as he eventually excuses himself to do some chore or another. During one of your trips, you tentatively asked Jimin if Jungkook was avoiding you, to which the blonde boy just laughed heartily at your query.
âDonât worry about it, Y/N. Heâll come around eventually; heâs just nervous. Donât tell him I told you this, butâŚâ he trails off, peeking over his shoulder to make sure Jungkook wouldnât accidentally overhear him. When he turns back to you, the smirk on his face is equal parts amused and mischievous. He looks a little impish, though you arenât sure if heâd take that too kindly. âJungkook always stares out the door, waiting for you to arrive. Iâve caught him red-handed far too many times for it to be a coincidence.â
Your cheeks flush warmly at his words but donât say anything after that. You suppose all you can do is wait for him to start warming up to you eventually, and you hope the day comes sooner as the summer days grow shorter and shorter.
Of course, that day does come eventually, but probably not on the day you wished it would happen.
Like all good things, summer comes to its close and so does the summer menu options offered at Euphoria Bakery. Jimin had already told you a week beforehand that your favorite strawberry shortcake milkshake would get phased out as soon as July hit, but you refused to listen. You had hoped that as his regular customer and friend, perhaps Jimin would make an exception and prolong the milkshakeâs lifetime for your sake, but it seems that Jimin has made it clear that friendship and business are two separate entities that he will not allow to coincide.
âPlease Jimin? Just one more time? Iâll even settle for a small size,â you beg, your entire body draped over the cashier counter like the pathetic plebeian that you are. Thankfully, since you have made it a habit to pass by the bakery when itâs close to closing time, there arenât any other patrons left to judge your pitiful display. Unthankfully, that also means Jimin is free to flick you on the forehead with no holds barred, leaving a large red welt where his finger hits.
âI already told you that I wonât budge, not even if you licked my Balenciagas. Besides, weâre out of strawberries anyway.â Jimin huffs, rolling his eyes at your pained whines as you grasp your head in agony. âOh stop it, will you? I didnât even hit you that hard.â
âI beg to differ, hyung.â Jungkook pipes up, startling both you and Jimin. Jungkook is usually content to wiping down the glass displays or tables while he passively listens to the two of you bicker, humming occasionally to indicate that heâs still listening, so it comes as a small surprise whenever he does decide to speak up. He must have noticed this too, as his ears quickly begin to redden as he scrambles to finish his sentence. âI-I mean, hyung might have small hands, but his finger flicks are no joke. You could break someoneâs skull with that thing.â
âWho are you calling small, huh?â Jimin growls, but the playful smirk on his face tells you that heâs just teasing. He pulls Jungkook in a headlock, who surprisingly doesnât seem all that bothered by the fact that Jimin is actively trying to block his windpipe with his strong forearms. âTake it back!â
âNever,â Jungkook wheezes, effortlessly removing himself from Jiminâs grip. He dusts himself off, not even breathless. âAlso, whyâd you lie to Y/N like that? We still have strawberries in the back. How else would we make our strawberry jam tarts?â
Jimin squawks indignantly, folding his arms. âHow dare you sell out our company secrets! I could fire you for that!â
Jungkook scoffs, bumping Jimin with his hip. Jungkook must also not know his own strength, because he accidentally causes Jimin to stumble a few steps back, nearly toppling over one of their bread racks. âYouâre joking. If you fired me, no one would be able to make the bagels in the morning because you never know how to proof them correctly.â
âSlander!â Jimin hisses, pinching Jungkookâs side in retaliation. You and Jungkook laugh at his childish pouts, but the older boy canât hide his own mirth for too long. âFine. You can stay. But you,â he points at you this time, eyes narrowing with suspicion. âYou better not seduce my boy over here to make your strawberry shortcake milkshake. I have eyes and ears everywhere.â He drags his finger to the corner of the walls, where there isâ
âThereâs nothing there?â You follow where heâs pointing, but all you can see is a stray cobweb that Jungkook must have missed while dusting this morning. âAm I supposed to be looking at something?â
âJimin is thinking of installing surveillance cameras soon. Heâs convinced that someone is trying to steal his banana cream pie recipe.â Jungkook shrugs. He slings an arm around Jiminâs shoulder, glaringly delighted when their height difference becomes even more apparent while he stands close to him. âAnyway, I promise I wonât get âseducedâ by her, or whatever you want to call it. Why donât you head home early for tonight? Iâll close up and Iâll try to convince Y/N to try our other pastries as a replacement.â
You open your mouth to try and protest, but Jungkook sends you a cheeky wink, making sure that his boss doesnât catch him in the act. Bemused but interested to see what heâs up to, you decide to keep quiet and wait for him to continue.
âDonât try and think youâre being slick here, buddy,â Jimin says, closing in on Jungkookâs personal space by pressing his chest against his. âIf I see that you break the bakery code and serve her that drink⌠There will be consequences.â
Jungkook rolls his eyes, sighing dramatically as he gently pries the smaller man away from him. âYeah, yeah. I got you. No funny business, I promise. Now get out of here, hyung. Leave the rest to me.â
Jimin gives him one last firm look before squinting warily at you, lips pursed tightly. âNo seducing,â he repeats, wagging his finger at you. He unties the apron around his neck, throwing it haphazardly at the coat hanger on the back door where his jacket was hanging. He folds it over his arm and points at the corner of the ceiling with his free hand once more before exiting through the front entrance, the soft bells hanging above the doorway tinkling in his wake.
When heâs gone, you release a breath that you hadnât realized you had been holding. âWell, that was easier than expected. I didnât think youâd be able to get him to leave. He must trust you a lot, huh?â
Jungkook shrugs. âNah. Heâs just lazy. He hates closing the bakery and will jump at any opportunity to go home early.â
You nod. âSeems like him.â Thereâs a beat of silence. âSo⌠How much seducing am I gonna have to do to get my milkshake, huh?â
Like you guessed, Jungkook immediately turns red at your words, spluttering and stammering over his spit for a few seconds before managing to come up with a reply. âO-oh, thereâs no need for that. I was gonna make the drink for you anyway.â
âBut what about the quote-unquote consequences?â you ask, still worried that you might be getting Jungkook in trouble. Youâd rather have your arm cut off than have him get punished, no matter how small it might be.
âNo need to worry about that. Jimin might pretend to be a prickly old man sometimes, but heâs mostly just full of hot air,â Jungkook snorts, shaking his head in amusement. âHeâll just make me treat him to some skewers or something. Heâs just teasing.â
âIf⌠If you say so? I just really donât want him to get angry with youâŚâ you say, voice turning small as you tried to reign your embarrassment in. âI know I made a fool of myself just moments ago and begged like a baby for the milkshake, but I was just exaggeratingâŚâ
âSomething tells me that you arenât, but letâs pretend for your sake that you are,â Jungkook says. You huff indignantly at his teasing, but youâre more overjoyed by the sight of his cute bunny smile. You had only seen it in passing a few times in the past, but seeing it directed at you is an entirely different experience. Because of you, your mind helpfully supplies.
He heads over to the backroom to begin preparing your drink, but he keeps the door open this time so you can see him even from behind the counter. You can mostly only see the large industrial ovens and bread racks filled to the brim with all sorts of pastries proofing for the night, but you do catch a glimpse of the sole blender near the back. Jungkook grabs the glass jar first and then walks over to the fridge just out of your sight, most likely to grab the ingredients needed for your milkshake.
The bakery is mostly silent, save for the sound of Jungkook moving and assembling everything. You rack your brain for some sort of conversation starter, as the atmosphere between the two of you has begun to return to its usual awkward state as you skirt around each other, unsure of where either of you stands. You might have known him for a while now, but today is the most youâve ever spoken to him and the tension is palpable.
âSo.â You clear your throat, heart beating a mile a minute in your chest. âI⌠guess this is going to be the last time I have this drink, huh?â
The sound of Jungkook chopping on the cutting board pauses for a second. You can only see his left shoulder from where youâre standing, but you can see it tense even then. âI⌠I mean, will you stop coming over to the bakery if it is the last time?â
There are so many things you want to say all at once, but the words somehow get caught in your throat. You want to say that you love coming to the bakery to see them (though itâs mostly Jungkook if youâre being honest) and that the strawberry shortcake milkshake had just been an excuse to visit for a while now. You want to keep visiting for as long as theyâll have youâbut you donât know how to say it without hot humiliation running down your spine. You donât want to weird him out by confessing to him all of a sudden. And so, you clam up, not knowing how to respond.
When Jungkook throws in all the ingredients in the blender, he doesnât turn it on immediately. He tilts his head to the side, not fully looking at you but giving you a view of his beautiful side profile. You see his Adamâs apple bob for a moment, his tongue poking out to wet his lips before he speaks. âBecause⌠If thatâs how itâs going to be, then maybe⌠buying a couple of skewers for Jimin wonât be so bad.â
You freeze. âWhat? Are you saying that...â
âIâll keep making the drink for you, even if itâs not on the menu anymore?â Jungkook finishes, turning fully to face you. Thereâs a shy grin on his face, coupled with the ever-present pink flush high on his cheekbones. âYes, thatâs exactly what Iâm saying. Weâll have to be sneaky about it, though. Youâll have to come to the bakery only when Iâm closing so that he doesnât catch us but otherwiseâŚâ He scratches the tip of his nose, looking embarrassed. âIf⌠If youâre fine doing that, I mean.â
It feels like an eternity before you can remember how to function like a regular human being again. Your insides feel like molten lava and youâre certain that your internal organs have begun to self-destruct right after that super-effective hit from Jeon Jungkook, super baker boy extraordinaire. Itâs mind-blowing how effortlessly cute he can be, making you realize belatedly that his quiet demeanor over the past few weeks had been a blessing and not a curse. If he had been this sweet with you from the get-go, youâd surely be melted butter on a sidewalk by now.
âI would love youâI mean, I would love it if you did that for me, actually.â You stammer, resisting the urge to punch yourself in the tit. Youâre thankful for the lack of mirrors at the bakery, for you are positive that you must look like the devilâs blazing red testicles at this point.
âGreat,â Jungkook smiles softly. He turns the blender off, pouring your drink into a paper cup. âOh, before I forgetâŚâ He grabs a marker from the small tin can near the cash register, and you watch as he quickly scribbles a few hearts around the circumference of the cup. âThere we go. Now itâs done.â
As Jungkook hands your drink to you, youâre hit with a moment of dĂŠjĂ vu when your fingers brush just like the first time you had met. You sense the same familiar shock of electricity when you touch, but instead of pulling away like before, Jungkook surprises you for the third time that day.
When heâs sure that you have a secure grip on your cup, he grabs your free hand with his, unfurling your fingers until he can get a hold of your pinky. He curls his pinky into yours, linking them together with a bashful smile on his lips. âThere. Now we pinky promised to each other.â
âY-yes. Of course,â you mumble, giggling lightly when he still refuses to let go. âI pinky promise.â

Five minutes away from Euphoria Bakery, Jimin sits quietly in his parked car, his figure hunched over the small screen of his phone as he chuckles loudly to himself. There is a tiny video of two people, a boy and a girl, with their hands held together. Despite the quality being grainy and warped, Jimin needs no confirmation as to who those people are; heâs always known, after all.
âAll according to keikaku.â He whistles happily, already salivating at the thought of all the skewers Jungkook will have to buy for him.

New York was nothing like Kurt Hummel had expected when heâd dreamed of moving there. It was ugly, it was dirty, and the competition to succeed was hell.
Even the blind dates his sister-in-law, Rachel, set him up on didn't make it any better.
The only good thing about New York was the small bakery nestled in between the entrance to his apartment building and the deli on the corner.
Mary's.
Maryâs was warm and inviting and whenever Kurt stepped into the bakery he felt like he was walking into someoneâs home, like he was a family friend allowed to visit at will.
And the barista who worked on Saturday nights was definitely one of the reasons for that.
Sam.
When Sam told Kurt that he would happily show him the city Kurt jumped at the chance to spend more time with him, even if, as he fell in love with New York, he also fell in love with Sam.
He really had to stop crushing on straight guys.
Chapter 1 of ??
Once again Kurt Hummel was sitting in the tiny little italian restaurant his sister-in-law, Rachel, had told him had the best vegan meatballs in the whole of the East Village. And once again he was waiting impatiently for his blind date, set up by said sister-in-law, to arrive.
It was a dreary day in mid September and the street outside the window was being pounded by the heavy rain. Kurt checked his watch again with a sigh. 15 minutes late. Why did everyone Rachel set him up with arrive late? Didnât actors understand the importance of being on time?
That was the problem with having a sister-in-law who was adamant to play Yenta and only interacted with her cast-mates, he guessed. Actors were notorious for being self-absorbed, after all.
He played with the brooch on his lapel, making sure it stood out so that his date - when he finally arrived - would be able to see it as he entered the restaurant. A hippo head brooch was always a good choice of a signal, no-one else in the restaurant was ever wearing one.
A single red rose, however, was a terrible one. There had been at least 3 guys so far who had walked through the door either wearing a rose in their lapel or holding one. Only for a woman, or another man, to enter behind them and take their arm - obviously on a date themselves.
âKurt?â A voice asked, and Kurtâs head shot up to smile at them. He stood and offered a hand for the man to shake...
âHeâs back again,â Isa said, barely hushed, in Lucasâ ear, as the front door jingled. âHeâs going to weigh five hundred pounds by the time he grows the balls to ask you out.â
Lucas ignored her, ignored the eyes of the guy heading for the counter.
âHeâs not interested in me.â
âYeah,â she scoffed. âHe comes in three times a week because your eclairs are just that good.â
âThey are.â
She rolled her eyes and pulled the bow tight on her apron. âI bet you ten euros he only wants to talk to you.â
Lucas shoved her over toward the register instead of taking the bet, and kept his gaze on the cookies he was icing even as he felt the warm gaze of a stranger on the back of his neck.
