idk if youre talking about university or highschool but i go to an art highschool in Miami Florida and theres no illustration class or any sort of class for where you can actually develop a style of drawinf or learning about illustrating ir anything and its really upsetting. Our art teachers are kind of forcing a certain way of thinking and style on us and its not fair. I wish they could help me direct my thinking in the right lath but my own path and help me develop a style. Oops sorry rant.
I’m talking about universities. I don’t even think we have something like an equivalent to an art highschool here. Maybe for music but I don’t think for art. I had to do only drawing unrelated classes in my academic carrer until I had my A level at nineteen.
Now is the first time I can go to a uni that is supposed to teach me things that are relevant for the career I want to pursue.Â
I’m not sure I understand. Your teachers don’t help you develope your own style, like they don’t defer to you and take time to look at your own work closely and give you tips?
But do they teach you skills? Like color theory, anatomy, painting techniques, working with certain programms, art history, layout and these things?
Because here it’s nearly the opposite. They don’t teach us the fundamentals. They don’t try to learn us on a professional level. They want straight away originality and an own style from us. And I’m pretty pissed because I pay them money for teaching me absolutely zero (exept our teacher in life drawing, she’s actually really great) and for giving me none or (I think) a bit biased critique on it.
