After reading GeneralBattuta's Honor Harrington fanfic, recc'd by r/rational once upon a time, and after meeting some members of The Royal Manticoran Navy organized fandom at Worldcons and NASFiCs, I decided that it might finally be time to read the books.
I went to my local library, checked out the first book, read it, enjoyed it, and returned it.
I went to my local library, checked out the second book, read it, enjoyed it, requested the third, and returned the second.
I went to my local library, picked up the third book, read it, enjoyed it, and went to reserve the fourth book
My library doesn't have the fourth book in print. No inter-library loan in the state has the fourth book.
Hearing my grumbling about the proprietary DRMed ebook systems, a friend whispered:
You can get most of the Honor Harrington series, and other books, from CDs that the books' publisher, Baen, released under a permissive license. These CDs have the Honor Harrington books, and many others besides, in .lit, .doc, .prc, .rtf, and .html formats!
So I downloaded the relevant CD's files as a zip, unzipped, plugged the RTF into Calibre and converted it to an ePub, tossed it to my phone with KDE Connect, opened it in Moon Reader, and ...
wait what how has it been nine hours where did the day go how have I finished this novel already
What will Honor do next? The next book is on that same disc....
