#bad teaching

My middle school trauma experience:

There is some strange things about words.

"He kissed me even if I didn't like it"

"He kissed me when I didn't want it"

"He kissed me without my consent"

"He sexually assaulted me"

They all sound different, don't they?

"He sexually assaulted me" sounds the worst eventhough it's exactly the same as "He kissed me without my consent".

When I say Aang sexually assaulted Katara, people go, "When? Where? I don't remember that".

Words are powerful and it sometimes bring people down to earth and see exactly what's wrong with something that looks innocent.

Sexual assault is a sexual assault. It must never be belittled. The victims mustn't be demonized, blamed or even overlooked.

What's the worst?

She may be looking fine with the first kiss (they didn't talk about it) but the second kiss? (She didn't want to be kissed. She got angry. Also, the conversations before that kiss. Wtf Aang?!)

This is the most obsessive thing I have ever heard.

"If I hadn't blocked my chakra, I'd probably be in the Avatar State right now!"

-Aang, the Avatar.

(He means the idea of Zutara is what makes him angry a.k.a Katara being with someone else than him is not tolerable. HE OWNS KATARA 🙄)

And Katara is literally oblivious because she thought he only hated the play because... I don't know... at least didn't think Aang meant it that way.

"We kissed at the invasion, and I thought we were going to be together. But we're not"

(1. You kissed her without her consent. Just because she didn't talk about it afterwards, it doesn't mean anything like she wanted it.

2. Just because YOU kissed her, that doesn't mean you're going to be together. It's wrong)

"Why don't you know?"

"Well, when is the right time?"

-Aang, the Avatar.

(Should I even explain this part? 😶)

Also, Aang DIDN'T try to kiss Katara. He kissed her.

*Sighs* And considering kids will watch the show and copy Aang is enough to make me go mad.

(Think about kids learning "it's right to kiss a girl even if she doesn't want it because she will kiss you after that") 🙂

As a person who still suffers from sexual assault (unwanted touch and some unwanted shows), I have no idea what to say, even.

Gowasu is so FRUSTRATING!

I'm just at the part where Gowasu and Zamasu are about to time travel for the first time and GEEZ!! This part of the arch is supposed to establish Zamasu as a bad guy, but it's hard to blame him while I'm watching Gowasu UTTERLY FAIL AS A TEACHER!

He has NO PATIENCE for his student. Zamasu continues to make the same points and ask the same questions, and Gowasu continues to simply scold him without explaining why its wrong! Zamasu isn't getting the point because Gowasu won't fucking tell him the point! He wont explain a god damned thing!

It's like watching my own childhood! People want to tell me how to be and what to think, but wont fucking explain how or why!

Zamasu doesnt understand, and Gowasu refuses to explain! OF COURSE HE WINDS UP WITH THE WRONG FUCKING IDEA! YOU WONT HELP HIM!!

And Gowasu's complete and utter inaction in all matters of his universe is no better balanced then Zamasu's extreme! They're just opposite sides of the spectrum from each other, Zamasu wants to do too much and Gowasu wants to do literally nothing! NEITHER OF THESE WILL MAINTAIN BALANCE!

But aside from all that, teachers should never pull a “child” from class knowing they have mental issues and scream at them till they have a panic attack, they should also not tell the child to stop looking for sympathy, then they shouldn’t bring up a sensitive topic by telling said student that their favourite teacher who left (who was also the teacher who the child sat with grieveing for two months when she had nowhere to go) would be “extremely disappointed and annoyed by this behaviour”

please, for the love of god, do NOT call one of your students out in front of the entire class for not knowing the answer to a question.

if you ask a kid for the answer to a math problem and they say “I don’t know/I’m not sure”, do NOT huff and say that you “explained this five minutes ago.”

do not say that they should “have written it down in their notes.”

do not say that they “should have been listening.” because chances are, they were.

having been put in this situation before, I can 100% guarantee you that all it will do is humiliate the child, shame them into not asking any questions in the future (even if they’re uncertain about a concept — they no longer trust you not to make fun of them) and they will most definitely dislike you. nobody likes being embarrassed in front of their friends, let alone a classroom full of children who are staring at them expectantly.

if you ask a kid for the answer to a math question and they say “I don’t know/I’m not sure”, either look around the class and ask if anyone can help them out/nod and move on, or do it with them. ask if there’s anything specific they don’t understand, and if they can point out something specific, explain it (or pull them aside later and ask if they’re having trouble with something). try to shift the focus from them to you, so they don’t have 20-something pairs of judging eyes staring at them. it’ll reduce the humiliation they’re sure to be feeling, or even prevent it altogether.
