#bad adaptations

before you put my head on a spike, yes i hated the characterization of lady mary, yes i hated that dumb white rabbit cause he was an atrocious antagonist (i would’ve much preferred something that was actually relevant to the games and not from some manga that 80% of the fans haven’t read)

but did i watch it to end with minimal tears shed? yes

and here’s why:

and because of that tragic truth DMC media is still media and i’m glad i got to see Dante in some shape or form

There is Legend of Sun Walker (2022) 孙行者传 and A Wiz named WuKong (2022) 西游记之七十二变 that I hate both for kinda the same reason. They are ugly and like that feeling of "who thought this looked good??" Maybe could have gotten a pass if they were like made in the 2000s but they are like so recent there is no excuse.

Another bad looking one that just.... wrong is The Legend of Pig Warrior (2019) 猪八戒·传说 it's mostly live action but the CGI its have is.... bad

Funny enough I have never seen this movie Bajie’s Marriage (1957) 猪八戒招亲 but like just reading the plot I'm like HUH????

When Tang Seng went to the West, he met a wild monkey man, and the wild monkey saw Tang Seng as very beautiful. When the monkey-man wanted to rape him, he was hit by the Buddha who passed by. Afterwards… Tang Seng named the wild monkey Wukong. The master and apprentice went on the road together.

Honestly I'm not like a BIG fan of really low-effort live action movie that just makes the piglrims like humans in modern day, but because I don't want them or like see anything TOO bad I don't really count them. Like most of the low-effort stuff seems harmless enough, more boring than hate.

But one I DO hate is this one called Yanmar Family Hour Fly! Son Goku (1977) 飛べ!孫悟空 and the MOST UGLY POPPETS I HAVE SEEN

I hate looking at it so much, I want to smash these things with a hammer. They look so bad god what were they thinking like "oh yeah, kids love horrible looking puppets that is funny." These are as bad as those hamburger puppets that were on Nickelodeon.

Sadly I do hate to say I hate The Monkey King: Quest for the Sutra (2002) 齐天大圣孙悟空 which has one of my favorite Wukong actors Dicky Cheung. But the plot was so nonsensical that I couldn't really get into it, maybe I need to give it another change but idk. That is kidna the same complaint I have with The New Legends of Monkey (2018) 新猴王传奇 because I did kinda like it in season 1, I saw that it was trying to be a love letter to the 1970s Saiyuki but.... it just wasn't going anywhere. It felt like the show didn't even know where it was going and I wanted to shake someone like "Do you even know what you are writing like pick a story line people", Bajie and Wujing were really carrying the show for me, a big shame.

I don't really like Shinzo (2000) 爆裂战士マシュランボー or Monkey Typhoon (2001) アソボット戦記五九 for similar reasons in that they just felt souless, like couldn't get into either past the first few episodes, none of the characters were likeable and just made the Wukong character too much of a pervet like what?

I Go Westward Journey (2014) 我去西游 and Goddess! I Go Westward Journey (2014) 女神！我去西游 are kidna similar in that I just think they look lame and hate their designs. Like why even make this if you are not even going to try.

I hate HEARTBEAT (2018) more for personal reasons cause the devs are like super transphobic, don't support this game ya'll. and I hate Black Cotton: Wuneng (2024) 黑闲话：吾能 just for being clearly a cheap game for people trying to buy Black Myth Wukong and making a mistake and buy this shit game.

WuKung: A Legendary Adventure (1995) I can't say I hate-hate but.... more just confused.... like who asked for this to be made? Why is it created? Why does it look like a He-Man rip off??

And last I have a comic and a book. Super Journey (2016) 超西游 was something I thought was going to be really good cause the cover art looked neat but then it turned out to be just 90% borderline smut art. And then art just got worse, the cover is the best thing about this.

And another person one is Arthur Waley's Monkey: A Folk-Tale of China (1942) just becuase I ahte the names "moneky, pigsy, and sandy" like everything else I could have let slide but those nicknames just.... ugh.

Cross (Season 2)

I enjoyed season one, as it was tense, different, and interesting (I haven’t read the books, so I can’t compare). Unfortunately, season two is an absolute mess. The mystery isn’t particularly compelling, and the characters spend more time trying to get one another into bed than actually solving the crime. It’s really not as good as it pretends to be. I won’t even bother finishing the season — after four episodes, I’ve seen enough and don’t care how it ends.
