Apologies if this post is a bit dry and long, I got a lot more fun stuff planned for this .... backpacking au??? I made. So please, bear with me for a bit.
I imagine everyone stayed with Toriel for a long time due to Clementine's twisted ankle. An injury that nasty is going to take time to heal properly, and it's not like everyone else could just abandon her, right? Besides, as much as Clementine needs rest, everyone else needs it too. Lying down for a bit and contemplating about the day they just had and the next steps forward sounds like a good idea.
Things seemed pretty peaceful for a while. Everyone got along with Toriel for the most part, eating her food, helping around the house, making her lonely little home a bit livelier.
Toriel was delighted. She doesn't need to wake up to a silent home anymore. This house finally felt alive again after so long. The ghosts of her failures, as both a mother and caretaker, can once more be put to bed by the new life in the house.
....But it's not like this could ever last, right?
Questions start bubbling to the surface. Horrible, terrifying questions.
"When can we leave?"
"Toriel, how do we leave the ruins?"
"When.....when can we go home?"
Toriel avoids answering these questions. She also tries to artificially prolong the natural stay of these kids as much as she can.Â
Toriel watched 7 other children walk themselves to an early grave. She's not going to let 8 more potentially meet the same fate.
......Everything would be so much easier if these children did not have so much to miss back on the surface. There would be no siren song otherwise that would lure these children, forcing them through hell before they inevitably met their end.
.....But Toriel's guests are starting to get antsy now. Especially when Clementine has fully recovered. Some try their best to do.... something, anything to leave, without Toriel knowing. These attempts are admirable, but..... the result is what you'd expect.
After Seth shakes off their shock, the two of them get to work on the map......Though realistically, they probably don't find anything for the map. Indigo suggests shelving the map thing for now and looking at other books in the house. There's actually a lot of useful books in the house if you look hard enough.
There were a lot of dog-eared paperbacks on the plants growing in the underground. There were basic textbooks on the physiology of all the monsters you could find in the underground. There were ancient books on the history and culture of the vast underground. There were.... There were a lot of books to cover with just the two of them. But that doesn't matter. They're going to read all these books with as much enthusiasm as they can.
The upcoming journey is going to be dangerous. That's basically a fact. It sounds almost impossible that a bunch of scraggly kids are gonna make it out of here alive.
If they want to get that one-in-a-million chance of everyone making it out safe and sound, then by god do they need to know what they're getting themselves into.
Thankfully, the two of them don't have to read all of this material by themselves for long.
The more everyone else agrees that they need to leave, the more people come and discover Indigo and Seth suffering studying. More and more will eventually join in and pick up their slack, making everyone's workload all the more bearable. All this studying will continue until the day everyone eventually leaves.

Ok your writing is chefs kiss and I JUST discovered the backpackers au???? Omg. Sheâs in so much denial even at the end i fear âoh itâd be cool to cuddle in bed I guessâ meanwhile xaden is picking out wedding rings and future childrenâs names đđĽ˛I do wonder how long does it take them in that au to admit to their followers theyâre dating or is it they never address it until theyâre engaged type situation?
thank you!! <3 yes she's so in denial she could be cleopatra.
in my head they don't say anything at first because violet doesn't want to, but after vi is more comfortable in the relationship (i.e. no longer in denial lol) it becomes a bit of a joke that they're not dating *wink wink* even though EVERYONE knows they are, but she still tries to convince people they're not dating in her videos as part of the joke while xaden goes to equal lengths to thwart these attempts. comedic tomfoolery ensues.
for example:
vi: *in the backroom of basgiath* "hi everyone, welcome back to my channel. today i'm reviewing a new water filter and backpacking stove i got from basgiath outdoors. i received them for free in exchange for an honest reviewâ"
xaden: *yelling in the background* "it was her anniversary gift."
vi: *throws the water filter at his head* "the anniversary of the first time i bought something at basgiath."
xaden: "the anniversary of the first time we fuâ"

Cullen, Josie, Leliana, and Cassandra are backpacking through Europe together And find themselves lost in a small city. It's beautiful and serene and they fall in love with the town and the friendly people. Cullen meets Dorian, and they hit it of right away. Cullen adores him and Dorian doesn't want to let go. But they're only supposed to be in town a week.
âBut even if I didnât think you were the most incredible woman Iâve ever had the pleasure of meeting, you solved my econ homework when you were black-out drunk, Vi. If thatâs not a sign that youâre more than capable of running your dadâs store, I donât know what is.â
âI did what?â Violet lifted her head, mouth agape.
But Xaden merely used her shock as an opportunity to kiss her again.
How long? a greedy, possessive part of her wanted to ask. Why me? But Violet didnât ask, because knowing was acknowledging, and Xaden was right â she wasnât ready to acknowledge this yet.
She straightened, the last of her clothes packed in the dry bag, and Xaden let their joined hands fall between them. His fingers loosened enough that she easily could have disentangled hers from them; as if he couldnât bring himself to release her entirely but still wanted to give her the option to pull away. With her free one, she shoved the bag back into his pack.
âForget about it,â Violet muttered. But she didnât pull her hand away. And, slowly, Xadenâs fingers curled tighter around hers once more, with the strength of a spring trap but the speed of thick honey, giving her every opportunity to run away one last time. What Xaden didnât seem to realize, Violet thought to herself grimly, was that the slow-moving honey, not the powerful spring trap, was what really kept her hand in his. The fact that heâd given her the time to pull away.
