"15,000 tiny turquoise tiles decorate this Aztec serpent, made around 500 years ago in Mexico. Aztecs believed double-headed serpents (known as maquizcoatl) to be bearers of bad omens. This object is a pectoral – a piece of jewellery designed to be worn on the chest – and it may have been worn by figures of authority during a ritual process.
