In 2018, I started taking pictures. I was unemployed at the time and living with my parents in their tiny NYC apartment. To let off some steam and clear my head, I started walking around the city. I figured since I was walking anyway, I might as well take a camera with me. That's when I got the RX100 M1. When I got this copy, the plate on the flash was missing so I made this brass bracket to hold the flash down.

I knew nothing about cameras, only that my aunt had the M3 at the time and really liked it, so I decided to nab it when it popped up for super cheap.

As I got more and more into the hobby, I eventually got interchangeable bodies and lenses, often times leaving the RX100 behind in favor of something with a better sensitivity, a bigger sensor, better dynamic range, or any other spec.

The advantage of the RX100 though is its size. It's just another category of small, even beyond the Fuji X70 or other pocketable cameras. I consigned it to sitting in the front pouch of my work bag.

When I switched jobs and had a longer bike commute, I also felt like I was in a creative rut, so I challenged myself to take one picture every day. That's when I started loving the RX100 again.

Oh don't get me wrong. It had its drawbacks, and I would have hated it if it were my only camera. But for this use case? It just fit so well.

I barely felt its size and weight, but I could stop at a stop light, pull it out, and grab the shot.

Small details started standing out to me. I'd see them and think "Ooh that's my shot for the day."

It genuinely made these rides much more engaging and meaningful.

But, I guess all good things have to come to an end. It's an old camera, as the original RX100 was released in 2012. It's had it's knocks, drops, and scratches.

Sleep well, my dear friend. You served valiantly. Thank you for keeping me sane when I first got you, and for keeping me curious ever since.

For as long as I can remember as I've been into pocketable cameras, there's been one camera which was regarded as one of the best.

When one popped up on Facebook Marketplace for (relatively) cheap just about 45 minutes away, I knew I had to go and snag it.

The moment I got it in my hands, I fell in love with the feel. Everything I've heard about the build quality and ergonomics of cameras from this manufacturer are true, I fear.

At this point, you can probably guess that the camera is the Leica X1.

It was small. It was solid. And best of all, it had a 35mm equiv. lens.

I thought it would be a perfect drop-in replacement for my go-to these past few years, the Fuji x70.

I love a lot of things about this camera. The lens is terrific. The ergonomics feel fantastic. I really love the colors. The files you can get out of this are absolutely ace. Just look at how our corn patch glows!

So that's it right? No need for more cameras. Pack it in. I love it.

Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to resell it. The one issue with it is that it's soooooo slow. The startup is slow. The AF is slow. That alone wouldn't be an issue since the MF has really good controls, but it uses a punch-in magnification instead of peaking??? On top of all that, there just isn't as much dynamic range as I get from the Fuji. It was probably as good as anything from it's era, and I could probably learn how to use it better, but I'm not a very good photographer, and that limitation on me means that this tool, in my hands, ended up getting more misses than hits.

On top of all that, The dynamic range is actually quite small, and that was the nail in the coffin for me.

I'm sure some judge of Scotsmen will come out of the woodwork to tell me "tHaT wASn'T a REAL LEiCa" but so far as I was concerned, it was. It wasn't a Panasonic rebadge, it was actually made by them. And the build quality and ergonomics really were good. And the lens was actually very sharp and far out-resolves the sensor. Unfortunately, I just wasn't able to make it work.
