airsLLide No. 17723: «1722», Avro 696 Shakleton MR.3, Ysterplaats Air Force Base, October 30, 1999
Frontal Views: While not a classical elegant beauty, the British-built torpedo bomber and maritime patrol aircraft Avro Shakleton definitely has an unmistakeble and unique «face». Pelican 1722 of the South African Air Force, as she was called on the radio, had formally already been decommissioned by 1999, but was kept airworthy and got dispatched to the occasional air show or open day. She has since become part of the collection of the South African Air Force's Museum Foundation at Ysterplaats AFB, near Capetown. Although still considered in airworthy condition, the museum now keeps her on the ground to avoid any risk of damage or loss.
