airsLLide No. 23245; TC-ORI, Airbus A300B4-203F, Orex, Zürich, February 9, 2004

Orex, or by its full name Orbit Express Airlines, was a short-lived Turkish cargo airline operating two Airbus A300B4 converted from passenger to freight configuration. TC-ORI was originally delivered to Air France as F-BVGT and got converted to a dedicated freighter when sold to ICC Cargo in Canada. She joined Orex in late December 2003 on lease from US freight specialist Tradewind Airlines and was returned in summer 2004.

In order to boost the slow sales of the Tupolev 204, designer Tupolev and serial production manufacturer Aviastar developed a freighter version of the twin airliner. The prototype, converted from a regular passenger version aircraft, was shown at the MosAero Show 1997 in a non-standard paint scheme of the post-USSR Aeroflot trading as Russian International Airlines - albeit with an oversize version of the communist hammer and sickle emblem as an anachronism...

The cargo version later found some customer indeed, for some time even flying in the colors of the global integrator TNT while being operated by the Lithuanian operator Aviapaslauga. Other customers were Air China, Aviastar and the Russian Postal Service.

airsLLide No. 3666: N4548M, Boeing 747-306, KLM, Toronto-Pearson, August 21, 1989

During the mid 1980's, KLM took delivery of three Boeing 747-300 Combis, sometimes inofficially also referred to Boeing 747-300(M), including N4548M, later re-registered in the Netherlands as PH-BUU. At the same time, it converted no less than ten of its fifteen older Boeing 747-206B to the same stretched upper deck as the -300, designating the converted aircraft as the Boeing 747-200B (SUD). With this move, KLM could offer a 10% capacity increase with just a minor addition to the empty weight of the aircraft and bridge the wait until the delivery of its newer Boeing 747-400.

airsLLide No. 18534: HB-INR, McDonnell Douglas MD-83 (DC-9-83), Crossair, Zürich, April 7, 2000

After focussing on classic commuter services within Europe for some 15 years, Crossair expanded into leisure flights to destinations around the Mediterranean and the Canary islands after it had become a 100% subsidiary of Swissair in 1993. Crossair immediately picked-up the leisure business when Swissair in turn dissolved its leisure subsidiary BalairCTA. The latter had only been merged two years earlier in a final attempt to stop the growing losses the two brands - CTA established in Geneva to serve the French speaking markets, Balair estabished in Basel to serve the German speaking part of the country - caused to the parent, with each of them operating a subfleet of its own with its own management, marketing and maintenance adding to the cost.

Crossair also took over some of the fleet of the two ancestors/merged ancestor, namely all MD-82/83 including HB-INR originally delivered to Balair in February 1985. The four MD-87 delivered to CTA in 1987/88 were however discarded and sold to the US.

Partnering with the local Qantas subsidiary in New Zealand, Origin Pacific was performing domestic feeder flights radiating from Wellington on New Zealand's North Island and Christchurch on the South Island. That included multiple daily schedules to the spectacular airport of the tourist hot-spot Queenstown which included a curved and scenic approach across the Crown range East of the airport.

Glasgow Abbotsinch or nowadays Glasgow International airport is located just some 40 miles/65 kilometres West of Edinburgh-Turnhouse and some 25 miles/40 kilometres North of Prestwick airport. Given this proximity it is inevitable that traffic to Scotlands most densly populated area is divided between the three airports of the region, with Prestwick mostly seeing cargo and low cost traffic, Edinburgh seeing a mix of European mainline and low cost traffic, and Glasgow focussing on regional feeder traffic including many flights to outlying islands off the Scottish coast, outgoing leisure traffic and domestic mainline as well as low cost traffic. All three airports do also have intercontinental flights, freight in the case of Prestwick, and various seasonal as well as some year-round services across the Atlantic and to the Middle East at Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Air Transat's A330, delivered new from the manufacturer just the year before, is seen on a seasonal service from Montréal, competing with Air Canada and Zoom Airlines on the market between Canada and the Scottish highlands, as seasonal tourist demand is rather healthy on either side of the «Big Water».

airsLLide No. 7571: C-GBYS, Douglas DC-6A, Conifair, Québec, June 4, 1992

Although Conifair was originally founded to fly spray missions fighting the epidemic spread of bugworms in Canada's forrests with converted Douglas DC-4 and Lockheed L-749 Constellation, the Québec-based carrier expanded into offering freight and passenger charters to remote airfields, be it for hunting parties going North, or supplying mining camps, construction sites of energy projects and the such. It relied on six Douglas DC-6 for these purposes, with one or two of the airframes serving as spare donnors for the active part of the fleet. C-GBYS was one of three complete and airworthy ships present at the home base of Conifair in summer 1992 and is seen here during an afternoon of training flights that included several approaches, much to the delight of four photographers enjoying her sights and sounds near the threshold.

At this time C-GBYS was pausing inbetween her seasonal assignment to fly tourists between Punta Arenas in Chile and Antarctica during the Southern summer (i.e. Northern winter) for a healthy fare of $ 10'000 and up, an assignment that lasted for two or three seasons and made Conifair known well beyond the scene of propliner enthusiasts.

After FedEx acquired the iconic freight airline Flying Tigers in August 1989, it also inherited the latters fleet of Boeing 747 freighters and the global network they served. FedEx initially continued to operate these freighters on their traditional routes, with all but one unit flying in neutralised Flying Tigers colors and just a small Federal Express sticker near the cockpit.

Eventually, Federal Express considered these Boeing 747s - some twenty units - to be oddballs in the fleet, and with the arrival of the MD-11F and the acquisition of used DC-10 converted to freighters, they were eventually replaced by the trijets on their intercontinental network.

In spring 1988, Lufthansa's second-generation A300-600 was just over one year old and early in her career with the German flag carrier that would extend for almost exactly twenty years more - she'd only be retired by Lufthansa at the begining of June 2008.

Although Lufthansa had acquired the basic -600 model and not the way more common, extended-range 600R version, it used its A300-600 on many medium-range flights, namely to the Middle East or Westafrica. In Lufthansa's opinion, the range of 6'800 kilometres (3'670 nautical miles) was more than sufficient for these destinations, and the gap to the 600R's 7500 kilometres (4050 nautical miles) - made possible by an additional trim-tank in the tailfin - seemingly not justifying a wait for the improved version.

With its fleet of Boeing 737s, Aloha Airlines offered inter-island services in the Hawaiian archipelago for almost 40 years, from the delivery of the first batch of aircraft in 1969 until the carrier had to file for bankruptcy in 2008. The bulk load of this work rested on the should... ehm wings of more than 60 different the -200 series models such as N810AL above, but from 1999 onwards, the carrier also took delivery of roughly a dozen Boeing 737-700 with ETOPS certification that it primarily used to open up new routes between Hawaii and the US Westcoast.

Named after the popular Austrian singer Falco - e.g. known for «Rock me, Amadeus» - OE-LNJ was one of Lauda's seven Boeing 737-800 used on leisure flights from various Austrian airports.

The logo of the carrier features a winged female figure with the slogan «Service is our Success» in gold, both on the tail and on the upper fuselage next to the airline titles, indicating that in contrast to other leisure carriers, Lauda Air offered full service amenities on its flights, using it as a selling proposition in marketing to position itself as the «better» choice for local customers.

Getting some open-air mechanical attention to her Wright R-2000 piston engines, N708Z waits for some ad-hoc freight assignment or lease between the Southeastern US and the Caribbean. After being retired from active duty by 1996, the former Coast Guard aircraft will be acquired for spares by Brooks Fuel of Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2004 and remain stored at Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport, GA.

During the winter schedule period of 2001/02, African Safari Airways replaced its sole McDonnell Douglas DC-10 that proved too big and costly for the leisure airline operating exclusively for a local tour operator. While ASA waited for the delivery of its chosen aircraft, former D-AHLC coming from Hapag-Lloyd stock, it tempararily leased sistership D-AHLA from the same source and flew it in a temporary hybrid scheme, combining its trademark zebra tail with the blue and orange cabin lines of Hapag-Lloyd.

D-AHLC is seen here completing her final flight on behalf of African Safari Airways, with D-AHLA on her delivery flight just being number two in approach right behind her on that specific day.

Trailing her leased sister, D-AHLC arrives at her new homebase sporting the full ASA livery. She'll soon be re-registered and placed in the register of Kenya as 5Y-VIP. As such, she will serve ASA until the airline and tour operator decide to cease operations by March 25, 2008, at the end of the winter schedule of 2007/08.

The Boeing 727 was American Airlines' workhorse on many secondary routes to the Caribbean, complementing services on trunk routes operated by widebodies like the Airbus A300 or the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10. With its three-engined design, the Boeing 727 didn't ever use any ETOPS rules for long overwater flights, but could serve island destinations from its beginning. Actually, the exact need of Eastern Airlines to use the '27 on Caribbean flights was an essential element in the aircraft's design phase, and definitely contributed to the success of the model which exceeded Boeing's initial estimates roughly by the factor 4. When launched, the planemaker from Seattle had hoped to sell between 400 and 500 jets of the model - in the end, it produced 1832 units of the two versions -100 and -200/200 Adv. during the 22 years of the trijet's production run.

RA-65926 was a Tupolev 134 configured with what the Russian aviation industry called a «salon», meaning it featured a spacious prime cabin for corporate use. Transaero Express operated several such Tu-134s. Ship 926 is seen here in the colors and titles of Volare whos titles and logo were the sole marks present on the - here not visible - starboard side of the aircraft, with Transaero Express' marks only appearing portside.

The aircraft itself had previously been associated with the Gromov Flight Research Institute at Moscow-Zhukovsky, and later returned to Gromov's airline spinn-off Moscow Airlines.

In the early 1990s, Air Malta was known as operator of a mixed fleet of Boeing 737-200/-300 and Airbus A320. The Boeing 727 above was a seasonal addition, leased from the British leisure carrier Dan-Air London for the summer season.

At this time, seasonal leases were a common, yearly thing with Air Malta, and nicely enough, the flag carrier of the small Mediterranean republic usually took the effort to fully paint the leased temporary fleet members, even if their time with Air Malta was just a few months, thereby adding some variety to the fleet's looks.
