Alekos is no longer scared of Avoki.
They used to be. For a long time, they couldnât stop looking over their shoulder every time Avoki came near. They knew Avoki was on their side. But still...something is so off about them that Alekos could feel it.
Itâs as if darkness itself clings to them, covering everything around them in shadows.
Itâs hard to be scared of them now though. True, they can wrestle a yekar into the ground without a struggle. They also seem to be really good at any weapon they get their hands on. But itâs hard to be scared of anyone when theyâre sitting on a pretty rug, sprinkling sand onto a chirping bird, while a young boy sits on their shoulders to braid desert flowers in their hair.

Itâs not that Sinbad is completely clueless, itâs just that heâs used to different clues. He always feels bad when it rubs someone the wrong way but he canât help it. Right now at least. Heâs getting better at it! Better at hearing the tone of someoneâs voice or the way they grip their weapon hilt...while they walkâŚ
âAre you alright, Kiki?â Sinbad asks. Avoki hears him â he sees Avoki glance to him from under their cape â and loosens their grip. âWhatâs the matter?â
Avoki shakes their head. Sinbad nudges them with his shoulder. Avoki nudges back.
âWhatâs the matter?â Sinbad whispers. âTell me, please?â Avoki scowls and moves their hands from under their cape to sign.
âToo many people. Loud. Tired. Confused,â Avoki tosses their hands up before pulling their hood tighter around their face. Sinbad hates it when they do that because then itâs harder to see their face. Half of Avokiâs language is facial expressions.
Itâs a pretty face too.
âI guess I tend to forget about you and crowds,â Sinbad mumbles. âThatâs ok! If we just get out of this main area, it gets a lot quieter.â Sinbad reaches to take Avokiâs hand but stops. Personal space. âActually...thereâs a place Iâve been meaning to show you anyway. It has some shells and stuff that you like. And itâs in a quieter spot too.â
Sinbad steps in front of Avoki to show them away when something brushes against his hand. When he turns to look, Avoki gives him a small smile and a nod as they squeeze Sinbadâs hand.

Sinbad loves these moments. Moments before the fights start, that rush of adrenaline and excitement, that little bit of worry about what to do if something goes wrong, but thatâs all normal. He loves that feeling. Heâs practically skipping as he wanders trying to find Avoki. He loves the moments before a fight but Avoki does not, he always like to check in on them when he can.
He knows thereâs a spot where the audience canât see. A little nook thatâs tucked into just the right corner with a sort of nice window that lets the fighters look out. It only works if youâre kind of tall but Avoki is definitely tall. Skipping around the corner, Sinbad smiles when he sees Avoki looking out that window. His feet kick a pebble into the nearby wall and makes Avoki jump at the noise.
âSorry, itâs just me,â Sinbad says as he walks over. Avoki relaxes when they see Sinbad but they donât smile back. Sinbad looks out the window to see where Avoki might be looking but all he sees is the crowd. âSee anyone you know?â
That seems to be it. Avoki tenses up again, shoulders hiking up to their ears before they grab Sinbadâs hand. They nearly throw their glove off so they can properly spell for Sinbad, âP-A-R-E-N-T-S.â
âYour parents?â Sinbadâs eyebrows furrow and he looks back out the window. He has no idea what Avokiâs parents look like but heâs looking as hard as he can. âWhat are they here for? To see you â I thought they hated you.â
He hears Avoki scoff before they spell into Sinbadâs hand, âL-O-S-E.â
Lose. Lose? LoseâŚ.whoâs losing? Avoki is losing? Well, Avoki is supposed to lose the fight â thatâs what they practiced, at least. Did they come just for that? To see Avoki lose? Well thatâs kind of shitty.
He says that and Avoki shrugs. They lean against the wall and put their head in their hands. Sinbad leans over to straighten the cape on their shoulders. He stands next to Avoki, leaning on that same wall as he thinks.
He doesnât know that much of Avokiâs family â mainly because of the language barrier â but he does know that Avoki doesnât like them and they donât like Avoki. At least itâs mutual, thatâd really suck if it was just one wayâŚ.which is off track thinking. He should be thinking about...what should he be thinking about? Avoki pushes back from the wall, motioning that heâs leaving. Sinbad quickly follows.
âSo what if theyâre here? It doesnât matter what they think. You know youâre as good of a fighter as I am, this is all just choreographed,â Sinbad rambles. âIt doesnât really matter.â Avoki nods. âIt matters a little?â Avoki hesitates before nodding again. âThen donât lose.â
Avoki stops walking. Sinbad does too, excitedly turning around as his brilliant idea forms, âIâll just throw the fight! And then you can win instead. Itâll be different and make a few people kind of mad...but thatâs alright. If anything, itâll be interesting!â
   âA-R-E. You. C-R-A-Z-Y?â
âItâs a brilliant idea! Come on,â Sinbad almost jumps as he gives Avoki a big smile, âItâll be fun.â
Avoki sighs and slips their glove back on. Sinbad waits. Avoki cleans their glasses on their cape. Sinbad still waits. Avoki gives another sigh before signing a quick yes.
âGreat. Now letâs hurry up so you can kick my ass and disappoint your parents.â

The tattoo is on Avokiâs hip. A black geometric tattoo with some blue highlights. Sinbad doesnât recognize the symbol. Before Avokiâs ie covers the mark, Sinbad reaches out to trace the design. Avoki flashes him a very confused look.
âI like it,â Sinbad says quietly. âDoes it mean something?â Avokiâs expression softens and they nod. They tighten their ie and the mark is hidden again. They think a moment before motioning for Sinbadâs hand and spelling.
   S-H-I-P.
â...is it...your shipâs flag?â Sinbad recalls one of the stories Avoki told him a little bit ago. How they used to live by the ocean and spent some time on a ship in the sea. Avoki rarely tells stories so Sinbad had remembered it in case he never got to hear it again.
   Avoki nods.
âWell then, what about this one?â Sinbadâs hand moves to trace the tattoo on Avokiâs chest. Itâs far more elaborate than the one on their hip or back, and the symbols are still foreign. Avoki watches as he does so, before they grab sinbadâs hand again to spell, S-H-I-E-L-D.
âHuh,â Sinbad pokes the center of the tattoo. âIâm guessing thereâs a reason as to why itâs over your heart then?â
Avoki gives a wink as they turn away. Sinbad watches them and frowns at the tattoo on their back. The nice design was now ruined by a nasty scar that didnât look like it would heal anytime soon. He had hoped it would disappear by now but...it hadnât.
He didnât mean to scar them. The fight had gotten out of hand. Heâs used to and enjoys the one on one fights, group battles always got far too hectic. He couldnât pay attention to everything at once and his opponent dodged his sword slice â only for Avoki to get in the way of it.
Avoki is picking some crud off their cape when Sinbad hugs them. His arms wrap around their waist and he rests his head on their shoulder. He feels Avokiâs head turn to look at him, one of their hands moving to hold his.
âYou know I didnât mean to, right?â he asks quietly. He feels Avoki take a deep breath. Their hand squeezes Sinbadâs.
   They know.
Itâs not that Avoki is a bad dancer, itâs just that itâs harder to dance with a fake leg than you would think. Mastering how to walk without a limp took them a long, long time - dancing doesnât even involve a straight line. So, even though they know all the steps and used to be able to do this easily, they are tripping on their own feet.
Sinbad doesnât seem to mind. Hell, he seems to enjoy it. Not in a teasing way - never like that - but he just doesnât seem to mind that his dance partner isnât as confident on their feet as he is. And besides, heâs strong enough that every time Avoki trips, he can hold the both of them up. Avoki thanks the gods for that. The last thing they wanted right now was to be embarrassed by falling flat on their face.
Just imagine, the supposed âbig bad villainâ of the arena falling and breaking their nose. Wouldnât that be a sight...
âYouâre thinking too much,â Sinbad chides them. Avoki canât sign with both of their hands holding Sinbad so a playful glare is their only response. Sinbad just shrugs. âYou are! You always do. Just move, donât worry about looking nice while you do it, you already look nice enough.â
Avoki rolls their eyes at the compliment, a blush blooming over their cheeks and ears as they ignore Sinbadâs advice. Which is a shame because he is right. Avoki focuses too much on their leg that they donât keep track of their partner. Their good foot trips over Sinbadâs and Avoki tips to the side.
Thank the gods Sinbad is strong enough that he can effortlessly turn the accident into a dip, smirking at Avoki with a âI-knew-itâ face.
âYou think way too much.â
Maybe they do.
