I felt the need to commemorate the ending of The Autumn Effect, so here’s a quiet moment between Ranma and Ryoga during their trip to the mountains early in the story. 

*SPOILERS FOR THE AUTUMN EFFECT AHEAD*

Honestly, my writing Hideo into the story was sporadic and completely unplanned, and that’s kinda what I love about it. It makes it feel more organic. You never know when life is going to throw you a curveball. New people enter our lives without warning and before we know it, they can change everything. 

Hideo Tanaka was someone that Ranma would have passed on the street without a second glance. He’s average, he’s not a martial artist, and he’s eight years older than him. They are two men from ENTIRELY different worlds, and yet, they still wound up meeting. As random and unmitigated as Hideo’s appearance in the story is, it was something I felt needed to happen to make Ranma’s paradigm shift. 

Obviously I was a little concerned about how readers would handle it, but that’s what made it such a fun chapter for me to write. It was risky. And it’s exciting to see all the different reactions to that chapter, and to Hideo’s character. 

Ranma says it himself: Hideo is everything he thought he used to want. Ranma changes so much between Chapter One, to the moment he meets Hideo in Chapter 18. He’s not the same person he was three months ago. His experience with the pregnancy, in spending such domestic moments with Ryoga, changed him slowly and yet all at once, to the point he’s not even aware of the change. He refuses to believe there was anything between him and Ryoga, because he wants to run away from all the pain that he’s in. 

Then along comes Hideo, who is exactly what “Chapter One Ranma” wanted: No weird stuff, no strings attached. But after experiencing what that actually feels like, he realizes very quickly that it isn’t what he wanted. In fact, he had been lying to himself in thinking he ever wanted it at all. 

After five long months, Chapter 21 is FINALLY here!
