The flowers of our old gnarly ornamental cherry tree have come and gone but they were so pretty while they lasted. Because of our hot spring days flowering trees and shrubs bloom only for a very short time here in Austin, so you need to enjoy them while they are having their moment. Theoretically there should be twenty four Paperwhites blooming in my garden at the moment, because that is how many I had planted last autumn. The reality is that there is only one that has an open flower right now. Why, you are asking? Because it was so warm here in Austin at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter that most of them bloomed in December. Well, that makes this one very precious so I wanted to share it with you. In an effort to make my dream of creating an English style garden here in Austin, Texas come true, I continue my search for plants that are typical English or similar looking substitutes for these. A plant that I have often seen in England and which I dearly love is cranesbill or hardy geranium. I took this photo in England and I believe the variety could be hardy geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’. I have three questions for you my dear followers: 1. Do you think this hardy geranium is really ‘Johnson’s Blue’? 2. Could you recommend other nice hardy geranium varieties? 3. We are snowed in here in Austin! Who would have thought that this is going to happen?! Our house and frontyard are looking more beautiful than I have ever seen them. The pristine white snow seems to let everything sparkle and shine like diamonds or pearls do. But it is too cold to be outside ( 14 F/ - 13 C lowest temperature) and really enjoy this miracle which is a disaster at the same time. We have plenty of power outages in Austin but so far we got lucky and our direct neighborhood got spared. Only two house are without water probably because of a broken of frozen pipe. But we do have friends here in Austin who are sitting in icy cold houses, because they can’t heat! So the situation could be worse for us personally. We just need to wait it out and stay at home until the streets can be used again. There is ice under the snow and our driveway and street is pretty steep so I don’t think we can drive anywhere in the moment and won’t even try! Muscari, also called Grape Hyacinths, are one of my favorite spring bulbs. I am not sure if they would grow and flower here in my garden in Austin, Texas, though since I haven’t seen any blooming in my neighborhood last year. But when I spotted the local grocery store offering some forced muscaris in a little container, I couldn’t resist. Their blue color is strikingly beautiful and the tiny bell shaped blooms are so endearing. I love them so much! Once they are done blooming I will cut off the flower stalks and plant the bulbs into my garden and maybe I will have muscaris next year. Did you plant muscaris in your garden or buy them forced? Does anyone grow them successfully in Austin or Central Texas?
