Joseph had arrived in Texas a few days ago by train from his family's country estate in New York State. His family, on his great grandfather's side, was originally from New Mexico,...well, not really, the old man wondered constantly around the West, doing various things, until, while prospecting, had struck gold and started the family fortune. Now, somehow, this arranged marriage idea had come to be, with the daughter of a well established rancher in TX. It was hoped, that there would be business connections formed with various interests in the South West, making the family even wealthier in the end. Joseph was not really keen on the idea, but, his grandparents, who had actually raised him, said that 'sometimes, we have to do things we don't, and they still turn out for the best'. As Joseph rides along to the edge of this large ranch's property line, going by map that had been drawn out for him, he thinks, "I should have stayed in the Marines, felt safer doing that." He pats the tall horse he had bought before the trip to Texas, Dagger, on the neck, then says, "Well, boy, maybe by tonight, you get to sleep in a stall, instead of outside." He glances around, hand fingering the grip of the experimental pistol on his hip, made by Smith&Wesson, chambered in .357 Magnum, also an experimental cartridge. Sitting in a scabbard tied to the saddle is an experimental rifle, made by a gunsmith named Sturm Ruger, with experimental ammunition, called .308. Being the member of a very wealthy, connected family, does allow you to have access to things before everyone else.

2. How does your OC remember their childhood? Is this an accurate reflection of what their childhood was actually like?

she's an interesting case in that i think her journey in the egg was pretty boring? which is, in a fic that is full of mishaps, interesting.

beckett likely picked her egg for himself before it was even laid. an EITC ship took her from georgia to england without incident, and once there, i imagine beckett spent a lot of time making sure she was educated while within the shell—both by a hired tutor and himself.

(aside: i never get into this in the fic, but i imagine beckett's backstory aligns more with TPoF—he was a third son to merchants, defected to the EITC after a bad childhood, and joined the aerial corps on the sly to connect dragons to the EITC. so he was among aviators through his formative years, and there is also an earnest desire to have a heart's companions buried within that ambition. his fondness for augusta is maybe the most real, personal thing about him; it just helps that she's a gigantic dragon specifically bred for killing on command.

her training after hatching would be fairly standard, if only because the EITC did not actually have leeway to have a dragon. augusta, being a dragon, doesn't really consider her childhood as a separate era. she likely folds her time in the shell and her dragonet days into her training, and sees it in terms as pragmatic as beckett, and finds comfort in that? like she WAS hand-selected by this person she loves, it WAS a business transaction, she DOES serve england with violence, and her existence is MORE meaningful because of that.

9. Describe a mundane day in your OC's life.

within the corps, before the fic kicks off properly, it's probably fairly standard—patrols with her formation, then honing her talons and preening luxuriously before and after meals with her crew catering to her whims. sleeping in a big unkempt dragonpile with the other corps dragons, for enrichment and socialization, then rise and shine to do it all over again.

after arriving in the caribbean i imagine she's not even patrolling unless beckett needs her for something—she's probably training to keep her mind engaged and her spirits up, flying at beckett's whim like she's a thoroughbred horse, and generally luxuriating in the hot weather. perhaps she's making a midwingman read her poetry. she's pretty easy-going, and despite who her handler is, i think she's not that picky or proud. there's not much to complain about and she's happy to go with the flow, regardless of what beckett has planned for the day.

28. What does your OC think others are saying about them behind their back? Is any of this true?

honestly. i don't think she cares at all LMAO.

and as mentioned, she's pretty easy-going—she wouldn't really have a personal relationship with anyone else in her crew besides beckett anyway, and since she's not a tyrant nor a hassle, i don't think there's a lot of gossip about her? any talk about her is probably very removed from her as a being—more like she is a ship or perhaps a statue to be taken care of. which is how she likes it.

but more in the spirit of the question, i think...scylla hates her, and tempest finds her acquiescence to beckett repulsive, and lookout is afraid of her, but augusta cannot and does not care. she could crush any of them in a fight and she knows it <3
