Reason:

A big part of her design and initial introduction as a character is how jarringly different she is from Sunny’s memory of her. While textually she just looks more punk and tough than before it does have some interesting implications as far as coding. A little later There is a scene where she is in a church and several attendees all make a big fuss about her off putting appearance and what a burden she is for her parents. She’s clearly not welcome in such a conservative space.

There is also the matter of her friends. Her initial friend group was almost all boys, it’s common for kids to separate along gender lines in friend groups, especially at the age they are in the flashbacks. Mari is the only other girl in that friend group and is shown to be doing feminine activities with Aubrey, things that her parents are stated to disapprove of like dying their hair girly colors. There’s also Aubrey’s friend group later in life all have very gender non-conforming designs slowing that is the group she is more comfortable with as she forms more of her own identity.

One could also argue that the headspace version of Aubrey is Sunny’s femininity manifesting and in that sense is also trans.
