Derek is tired of his family trying to set him up on dates with women. Stiles volunteers to pretend to be his boyfriend.
For @artemis69 â Happy Birthday!
(You can also read it here on AO3)
Derek paced back and forth across the loft, his shoes tapping a rhythm against the polished concrete floors. He held a book in his hands, but he wasnât reading; heâd been staring at the same page for nearly an hour now, reading the same sentence over and over as he walked back and forth across the room.
âOkay,â Stiles said abruptly. âWhatâs going on?â
Derek stopped. He turned to face Stiles, his brow furrowed with confusion. âWhat?â
âYour pacing is driving me mad,â Stiles told him. âClearly somethingâs wrong.â
âIs it that obvious?â Derek asked.
âIt is to me.â
Derek let out a measured sigh. He shut the book he was reading and set it aside on his desk, leaning back against the edge of the desk.
âMy familyâs having a get-together,â Derek explained. âAnd every time I meet up with my family they try and set me up with some girl or another.â
âAnd thatâs bad?â Stiles prompted.
âIt is when every girl they set me up with just reminds me of my ex,â Derek replied.
âOh,â Stiles said quietly.
âYeah,â Derek muttered. âKnowing theyâre going to do it makes me not want to go.â
They fell quiet for a moment.
âWhat if you had a date?â Stiles asked.
âI donât,â Derek replied.
âBut what if you did?â
âWhat are you saying?â Derek asked.
âIâm asking, would your family back off if you showed up to dinner with a date?â Stiles clarified.
âI suppose so.â
âWhat if I were to be your boyfriend?â Stiles proposed.
Derek nearly choked on his breath. He blinked in surprise as he looked at Stiles. âWhat?â
âWhat if I pretend to be your boyfriend for the night,â Stiles repeated. âThat way, your family will think youâve got a partner and theyâll stop trying to set you up with someone.â
Derek opened his mouth to refuse but stopped himself. His words died away in his throat as he dropped his gaze and thought it over.
âThat⌠could actually work,â he said quietly. He looked back up at Stiles. âAre you sure?â
âYeah,â Stiles said.
âWell, okay then,â Derek agreed. âDinnerâs at seven.â
Stiles turned his phone on, looking at the time. âIâd better go get ready.â
âIâll pick you up around six-thirty, if thatâs alright?â
âSounds good,â Stiles said, packing up his things and slinging his bag over his shoulder. He offered Derek a smile before heading for the door. âSee you soon.â
----------------------------
Derek pulled up to the curb out the front of Stilesâ house. He turned off the engine and stepped out of the car, making his way down the small footpath that led up to the front door.
He rang the doorbell, stepping back from the door and burying his hands in his pockets.
He felt his chest tense as his stomach twisted anxiously.
Why am I so nervous? he asked himself.
The front door opened and Derek turned to see Stiles standing in the doorway.
He was dressed in a pair of black dress pants that complimented his slim waist and a light grey button down shirt that was fitted to his broad shoulders and tucked into the hem of his pants, accentuating his slender but firm body.
Stiles looked from Derekâs face, down at himself and back again.
âIs it too much?â he asked.
Derek shook himself from his stupor. âNo, you look great.â
Stiles smiled, his face lighting up and his citrine-brown eyes sparkling as he did.
Derek couldnât help but smile back.
âWe should get going,â Derek said softly, forcing himself to look away from Stiles.
Stiles nodded. He pulled the door shut behind himself, locking it before following Derek to the car.
He climbed into the passenger seat, fastening the seatbelt as Derek climbed into the driverâs seat and started the engine.
The Camaro roared to life, the rumble of the engine filling Stilesâ chest as Derek pulled away from the curb and drove down the streets, towards the Hale house that sat on the outskirts of town.
Derek pulled up to the house, turning off the engine and letting the rumble of the Camaro die away into the evening air.
He stepped out of the car, waiting by the hood for Stiles.
âAre you sure about this?â Derek asked.
âAbsolutely,â Stiles replied.
âIf you want to back out or leave at any timeââ
âDerek,â Stiles interrupted, his voice soft. âItâs going to be okay.â
Derek offered him a kind smile, pulling his hand out of his pocket and draping it around Stilesâ shoulders.
Stiles leant into Derekâs warmth, wrapping his arm around the manâs waist as they walked over to the front porch and up the steps that led to the front door.
Derek knocked at the door.
A moment later, the door opened and Lauraâs friendly face appeared in the doorway. A bright smile lit her face as she looked at her brother.
She quickly ushered them in, closing the door and pulling her brother into a hug.
Derek hugged her back.
âItâs so good to see you, Der,â Laura said.
âYou too, Laura,â Derek replied.
As they drew apart, Lauraâs eyes drifted to Stiles.
âHi,â she said, smiling brightly.
âThis is Stiles,â Derek introduced him. âMy boyfriend.â
âBoyfriend?â Laura repeated back to him, failing to hide her surprise.
âWho has a boyfriend?â Peter asked as he stepped out of the living room.
âDerek,â Laura answered.
Peter looked from Derek to Stiles, a look of confusion on his face.
âStiles?â Peter asked, stunned. âYouâre dating Stiles?â
âYes,â Derek answered firmly, cutting off whatever smartass remark his uncle was about to make.
âCome on,â Laura said, waving them over towards the doorway. âEveryoneâs in the living room.â
Laura and Peter led the way into the room.
Derek leant in close to Stiles and whispered, âI apologise in advance for everything thatâs about to happen.â
Stiles let out a quiet chuckle, taking Derekâs hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze.
âItâs going to be alright,â Stiles promised.
They walked into the living room.
There was a fireplace built into the far wall, a glowing fire lighting the room and spreading warmth. The sound of the logs burning, crackling, and popping seemed to soothe Stiles. Above the fire place was an old hardwood mantle, worn and scarred. Old books with broken spines and fragile hard covers that had fallen apart over time sat atop the mantle with framed photos sitting either side; photos of the family grouped together and smiling radiantly, class photos of Laura, Derek and Cora from high school, of Derekâs dad holding one of them when they were a baby.
Cora sat in one of the arm chairs, stretched out with her legs hanging over one of the arm rests and her head resting against the other as she scrolled through her phone.
âHi Stiles,â she greeted without looking up.
âHi Cora,â He replied.
Peter sat himself down in the other armchair, slouching back against the back of the chair.
Talia sat at one end of the couch, her legs folded up beneath her. When she saw Derek, her face lit up. She rose from the seat and crossed the room to her sonâs side, holding out her arms and pulling Derek into a warm hug.
She pulled back, cupping Derekâs face in her elegant hands and smiling at him fondly.
Derek forced a smile in return.
âYouâve grown your beard out more,â she said, gently cupping his cheek. âIt looks good on you.â
âThank you,â Derek said quietly. He cleared his throat, reaching behind him and taking Stilesâ hand, gently pulling him closer. âMum, this is Stiles.â
âItâs nice to meet you, Stiles,â Talia said, smiling sweetly as she shook his hand. âIâve heard a lot about you.â
âOnly good things, I hope,â Stiles replied.
âOnly good things,â Talia reassured him. âBut in all the time Derek talked about you, I never knew the two of you were together.â
âWe wanted to keep it between ourselves for a little while,â Stiles said.
âI understand. I must apologise, I didnât know you were coming tonight.â
âIt was kind of a last minute decision,â Derek explained. âSorry.â
âItâs alright,â Talia said. âIâll go lay an extra place at the table for you.â
Talia gave Derek a kiss on the cheek before leaving the room.
Derek let out a heavy sigh, pulling Stiles back against his chest and wrapping his arms around him.
Stiles let out a quiet laugh, falling back into Derekâs warmth. He lifted his hands to Derekâs forearms, holding onto them as he gently brushed the ball of his thumb across Derekâs tan skin.
Derek smiled sweetly, craning his neck to look at Stilesâ.
Stiles turned his head and smiled up at Derek.
Derek felt his face flush with a bright red blush. He dropped his face into the curve of Stilesâ neck, nuzzling into his warmth as he tried to hide his bashfulness.
Stiles turned his head slightly.
âThat wasnât too bad,â Stiles whispered quietly enough that no one could hear.
Dinner was when things got awkward; every conversation was quickly derailed and diverted towards Derek: nagging him about not visiting them, his reclusiveness, and his failed love life.
Derek sat there and took it all, staring down at his dinner plate as he tried to shut them out.
Stiles did his best to deflect the questions or change the topic.
Thatâs when the conversation turned into an interrogation of Stiles.
âWhy are you dating him?â Cora asked bluntly.
Stiles nearly choked on his drink. He blinked in surprise. âI beg your pardon?â
âCora,â Derek growled.
âWhy are you dating Derek?â Cora repeated.
âYou want to know why Iâm dating your brother,â Stiles said, an upwards infliction of his voice making it sound like a question. His brow furrowed slightly in confusion as he looked at Cora.
âYes,â Cora replied.
âBecause I like him,â Stiles answered. âBecause heâs an incredible man and â honestly â I donâtâ think Iâd ever be able to explain how I feel about him in words. Heâs kind and funny. Heâs one of the few people that I feel like I can talk to. I can be myself around him, and he can be himself around me. Because⌠because I love him.â
Stiles looked at Derek, smiling sweetly as he met the manâs gaze.
A rosy blush coloured Derekâs cheeks as he smiled bashfully. He bowed his head slightly.
Stiles reached over, laying his hand atop of DerekâsâDerek gently squeezed it in return.
âI just⌠I want to spend forever with him,â Stiles said.
Cora shrugged slightly.
âI was just asking because Derek hasnât exactly had the best taste in partners,â she said.
âCora,â Laura said warningly, glaring at her little sister.
âWhat?â Cora said. âItâs true. Every person heâs ever dated has either abused him or cheated on him.â
âCora, thatâs enough,â Laura said firmly.
âI just want to make sure that Stiles isnât like the others,â Cora argued.
Derek pulled his hand free of Stilesâ and slammed his hands down on the table, making everyone jump. He shoved his chair back as he rose to his feet.
âStiles is not Kate!â Derek shouted. âNor will he ever be anything like her.â
Everyone was stunned, looking at Derek in shock.
âIâm tired of you always bringing her up, always reminding me of what she did to me,â Derek continued. âThatâs why I stay away. Thatâs why I hate coming to dinner or family events, because every time I do you always remind me of a part of my life that Iâd rather forget.â
He drew in a deep breath, composing himself. He straightened up.
âStiles is not Kate,â Derek said firmly before stepping away from the table and storming outside, the front door slamming shut behind him.
There was a moment of silence before Stiles slowly rose from his seat and followed after Derek.
Derek sat on the front step, hunched over as he drew in deep breaths, fighting back tears.
Stiles carefully shut the door behind him, stepping over to Derekâs side and sitting down next to him.
âIâm sorry,â Derek whispered.
âItâs okay,â Stiles said softly.
âNo,â Derek replied. âNo, itâs not. Iâve never raised my voice, especially not at my family.â
âSometimes you have to scream in order to be heard,â Stiles said.
Stiles reached out, gently setting his hand on Derekâs forearm.
Derek set his hand on top of Stilesâ, and for a moment Stiles thought he was going to shove him away. But he didnât, he held onto Stilesâ hand, letting the young manâs warmth comfort him.
Stiles leant against Derekâs side, resting his cheek on Derekâs shoulder.
Derek let out a heavy sigh, letting Stilesâ presence comfort him.
âItâs hard to heal when people keep reopening your wounds,â Stiles said quietly.
Derek sighed. âEven so, I shouldnât have flown off the rails like that.â
âOn the up side, maybe now theyâll finally stop bringing it up or trying to set you up with someone,â Stiles said, trying to sound positive.
Derek let out a breathless chuckle. He gently squeezed Stilesâ hand.
He heard the door open behind them.
Stiles straightened, looking over Derekâs shoulder. He nodded and gently pulled away from Derek. He gave Derekâs hand a gentle squeeze before rising to his feet and making his way inside.
A moment later, someone else sat down beside him.
Derek glanced out the corner of his eye, looking at the broken look on his uncleâs face.
âI hate it when they bring her up, too,â Peter admitted. âI hate remembering how you looked when I found you. I hate remembering the sound of you screaming yourself awake every night from the nightmares you had because of her. I hate seeing the pain in your face every time someone says her name.â
Peter let out a sigh.
âBut you know what? Iâm proud of you. Iâm proud of you for standing up for yourself. I proud of you for moving on, for making a life for yourself, and for finding someone that you love,â Peter said.
âIs mum upset?â Derek asked.
âNot at all,â Peter told him. âI think everyone finally got the point, and theyâre sorry.â
âSo am I,â Derek said quietly.
Peter draped an arm around his nephewâs shoulders and held him close.
âYouâve been to hell and back, kid,â Peter said, craning his neck to look Derek in the eye. âBut just remember, you did make it back.â
A small smile turned up the corners of Derekâs lips.
âYeah, I did,â Derek said, a hint of pride in his voice.
âNever forget that.â
The house was quiet when Peter and Derek came back inside.
As they stepped into the dining room, everyoneâs eyes turned to Derek.
Derek ignored them. He walked over to Stilesâ side, leaning forward and pressing a soft kiss to Stilesâ cheek.
Stiles smiled in return, the sweet grin filling Derekâs stomach with butterflies.
He sat down next to Stiles, reaching over to where Stilesâ hand sat on the table and taking it in his own.
Stiles turned his hand over, lacing their fingers together and giving Derekâs hand a gentle, reassuring squeeze.
They ate desert quietly, talking about Lauraâs new apartment and how Cora was doing at school.
The night passed a lot quicker, but a heavy blanket of tension and guilt hung over them.
âWeâd better get going,â Derek said, stepping back into the dining room after he and Laura cleared the dishes. He looked at Stiles. âWeâve got to get home before itâs too dark.â
Stiles nodded and rose to his feet.
Cora said goodbye from where she sat on the other side of the table. Peter rose to his feet.
âIt was nice to see you again, Stiles,â Peter told him, shaking his hand.
âYou too,â Stiles said.
Peter looked up at Derek, offering him a smile.
Derek smiled in return, nodding slightly; they didnât have to speak, they knew what the other was thinking.
Laura stood up and stepped around the table, pulling her brother into a hug.
âPlease come back soon,â Laura said quietly.
âI will,â Derek promised.
âI love you, Derek.â
âI love you too,â Derek said, hugging her tight.
Laura pressed a kiss to his cheek before stepping past him and hugging Stiles.
Talia walked them to the door.
âDerek,â she said softly. âI just want to say, weâre sorry.â
âI know,â Derek said.
âI know you donât like talking about what happened to you, but if you ever feel like you want to talk, you know Iâll always be here for you,â Talia said, taking her sonâs hand in hers. âIâm sorry for how we acted; Iâm sorry that you felt like you didnât belong here or that you wanted to stay away. We never meant to upset you or make you feel uncomfortable, and we never meant to hurt you. Iâm sorry.â
âIâm sorry too,â Derek said quietly.
Talia reached forward, cupping Derekâs cheek and craning her neck to look her son in the eye. âI promise, youâll always have a home here.â
Derek smiled softly.
He stepped forward, letting his mum pull him into a hug.
âI love you, mum,â Derek said quietly.
âI love you too, sweetheart.â
She pressed a kiss to his cheek and, as she stepped back, brushed aside a strand of raven-black hair that hung forward in Derekâs face.
She turned to Stiles. âIt was very nice to meet you, Stiles. Iâm glad I finally got to meet you.â
âYou too,â Stiles replied.
âYou two take care,â Talia farewelled.
âBye,â Derek said quietly, taking Stilesâ hand and walking out the door.
They made their way over to the car, climbing into their seats.
Stiles waited until Derek turned on the engine before asking, âAre you okay?â
Derek let out a heavy sigh.
âYeah, he said quietly, turning to look at Stiles. Stiles could see the sincerity in his face when he said, âIâm okay.â
----------------------------
Derek walked Stiles up to the front door. He leant forward and pressed a soft kiss to Stilesâ cheek.
Stiles let out a quiet chuckle.
âThereâs no one around, you can stop pretending,â Stiles said quietly.
âIf Iâm being honest, I stopped pretending a while ago,â Derek admitted.
He wanted to look away, wanted to hide his shame, but he was entranced by Stilesâ eyes.
His heart hammered in his chest as he waited for Stiles to say something.
Stiles bowed his head slightly, a small smile turning up the corners of his lips.
âI stopped pretending a while ago too,â Stiles confessed, looking back up at Derek.
A sigh of relief fell past Derekâs lips.
âDoes that mean weâre dating now?â Derek asked.
âI suppose so.â
âIt still feels weird not asking,â Derek admitted.
âThen ask me,â Stiles said.
Derek felt his heart flutter as he looked into Stilesâ eyes.
âStiles, will you go out with me?â Derek asked.
Stilesâ smile lit up his face.
âYes,â he replied, taking a step forward. He looped his arms around Derekâs shoulders, pulling the man closer as he whispered, âIâd love to.â
âIsnât there a rule about not kissing until the third date?â Derek asked, a coy smirk turning up the corner of his mouth.
âJust kiss me,â Stiles said.
He felt Derek smile as he pulled Stiles closer, closing the distance between them and bringing their lips together in a tender, loving kiss.
Hi! Good luck with the whole...word going insane bit :D For the prompt, I would love to read on the closeness between merlin and the knights, and Arthur trying to woo when all his subjects are kinda more in love with Merlin than they should (i.e. they all realized long ago how awesome Merlin is, and they are shameless in their appreciation of his person). In these trying times, I just dream of reading Merlin being utterly loved and supported for once, and Arthur just catching up
Aaa what a cute prompt! Merlin deserves all the love in the world!!
Prompts (or any prompt) Â + Ficlets

A month after Arthurâs coronation, he finally felt like he was settling into the throne. That was the night Merlin came to his chambers with shaking hands and guilty eyes. He confessed to years upon years of lies and transgressions. Arthur felt like his entire world had been turned upside down, even more so than when his father had died or when Morgana had attacked Camelot.
Arthur hadnât banished Merlin, but he threatened it more often than he liked to remember. It took what felt like ages for all of Merlinâs deeds to come to light, and each one felt like a new wound being reopened and healed again. But Arthur knew from the very beginning it wasnât Merlinâs magic that hurt Arthur. It was his lies. It took Arthur the better part of a year to understand all that Merlin had done and how little a choice Merlin had in those lies.
Changing laws was never an easy task, especially for a new King, but especially for a law as harsh and indomitable as the ban on magic. To his councilâs surprise, Arthur lifted the ban, but also appointed a Court Sorcerer. The day of Merlinâs instatement at court, Arthur had feared Camelotâs reaction. Arthur had worried the knights wouldnât trust a manservant to protect them. Or that the servants would resent Merlinâs promotion. Or that the lower town would see the magic ban and Merlinâs position as a trick.
He need not have worried, though. To Arthurâs amusement, Camelotâs people loved Merlin. The council was a little disgruntled, but they were the minority. The knights were overjoyed with Merlinâs promotion. Gwaine in particular wouldnât stop puffing up his chest and patting Merlin on the back, like some sort of proud rooster. The castle servants seemed to dote on Merlin as he stumbled through his transition from servant to lord. The serving girls cooed over him as he insisted they just call him Merlin, because he really hated when people called him âmy lord.â The people of the lower town adored him, praising him for all he had done. There were a few, Arthur noticed, that held tightly onto Merlinâs hand as they desperately thanked him for his bravery.
All of this was unexpected, but what was most unexpected was the change in Arthurâs own heart. He had always loved Merlin. He had been by Arthurâs side for so long, and he had always been a loyal and compassionate friend. Now, every day it felt he was seeing a different person dote on Merlin. Arthurâs surprise wasnât because he didnât think Merlin deserved the praise, but rather that Arthur seemed to be the last person in Camelot to acknowledge it. It appeared as though Merlinâs instatement as Court Sorcerer was just Arthur catching up with everyone else.
Merlin slammed open Arthurâs chamber door. (He still hadnât learned to knock and since he was no longer Arthurâs manservant, he had even less of a right to enter Arthurâs chambers unannounced. But Arthur was surprised to discover he truly didnât mind.)
Merlin stomped into the chambers, âIf another person says âmy lord Emrysâ to me one more time, Iâm going to turn into a bird and fly away and youâll never see me again-â
Merlinâs odd rant was cut short when he noticed what he had walked in on.
The table was set for two. Arthur was setting down a candle, as he finished lighting the last of several that adorned the table. Arthur himself was only in his white tunic, his chainmail and cloak discarded earlier in the evening.
âOh,â Merlin cursed under his breath, âIâll just,â He made a motion to the door and took a step backward.
âClose the door, you idiot. The food is going cold.â
âHuh?â Merlin said.
Arthur ignored him and poured two goblets of cider (Merlinâs favorite.) He offered one to the Court Sorcerer who was still hovering awkwardly in the chamber entrance. Eventually Merlin closed the door with a flick of his hand, his eyes shining gold for a second, and took the offered goblet. Merlin held it to his chest, looking a little bit like a spooked stoat.
Arthur held out a chair, and Merlin took it silently.
âWell?â
âUh,â Merlin said, eloquently.
âWhat was this about you turning into a bird? Did a serving girl corner you again?â
That seemed to break Merlin out of his stupor. He continued his rant about propriety and how Arthur had turned Merlin into a lord as punishment. Arthur just ate his dinner and sipped his cider, bemusedly watching Merlin chatter away.
After dinner, Arthur poured Merlin more cider. Merlin seemed to have gone quiet again, staring into his goblet with brows pinched.
âNot to your liking?â
âHm? Oh, no, itâs good. Amazing, actually. Um, so, this dinner was for⌠I mean how did you know I was going to come here? You didnât exactly tell me to join you for dinner.â
Arthur smiled, âDonât be ridiculous, Merlin. Youâve come to my chambers every night for the past month, since your instatement.â
âOh. Have I? Old habits die hard, I guess.â Merlin blushed, âIâm so used to coming here at the end of the day.â
âYou still refuse to move out of Gaiusâ room too.â
âIt feels wrong to move out,â Merlin rehashed his same old argument.
âThereâs a perfectly acceptable chamber for you in the East tower. You could have an entire room for your work.â Arthur sighed, âYouâll need to move out eventually.â
Merlin bit his lip, âIâm not used to it yet. It feelsstrange. I feel like Iâm forgetting my chores. I keep thinking that I should do the laundry or polish your armor.â
âYou donât have to anymore,â Arthur said.
âIâm sorry I keep coming to your chambers. Iâll have to remind myself not to-â
âDonât,â Arthur said a little too quickly. He cleared his throat, âYou donât have to. I mean, I donât mind.â
Merlin blinked at him.
âYou can come to my chambers at the end of the day, like you used to. You can join me for dinner.â
âWhat? Every night?â Merlin laughed, but his eyes were cautiously watching Arthur.
âIf you like,â Arthur said, feeling his own stomach tighten into knots.
âOh,â Merlin said. Â Arthur could tell he was fighting off a smile, âAlright.â
âGood,â Arthur said, his stomach doing several flips. He took a sip of his cider, watching Merlin out of the corner of his eye. Merlin was watching him as well. He felt a bit like a young boy, discovering the wonders of love all over again.
Arthur stood up and offered his hand to Merlin, âJoin me by the fire?â
Merlin looked at the hand, reaching out but pausing before his hand touched Arthurâs.
âArthur⌠Are youâŚAre you courting me?â
Arthur didnât retract his hand, but it took a lot for him not to turn away, embarrassment and fear of rejection warring inside him. Arthurâs mind cycled through several phrases of âI can stopâ and âno, donât be absurdâ and âonly if you want me to.â He must have paused long enough that Merlin seemed to take that as a âyes.â
Merlinâs hand slipped into Arthurâs, his palm fitting neatly into Arthurâs.
âYou donât have to court me, Arthur.â Merlin stepped up close to his King, his other hand reaching up and brushing Arthurâs hair into place. âYou won me over a long time ago.â
Arthur heart picked up pace, and he tried not to shiver at Merlinâs delicate touch.
âLet me, anyways?â Arthurâs words were a little disjointed.
Merlin smiled, his eyes closing into small crescents. âFar be it from me to deny the King.â
Arthur huffed out a laugh, âNow that is simply untrue. No one defies their King quite like you do, Merlin.â Â Unable to control himself, he lifted their joined hands and kissed Merlinâs knuckles.
Their joined hands rested between them as they sat by the fire, Arthur watching Merlin conjure scenes in the flames.
The look the Sheriff sends in Derekâs direction is a monologue in itself. One that somehow implies that Derek is a bad boy wrapped in leather that coerced the Sheriffâs poor underage son into raising a child out of wedlock.
Which is all kinds of awkward since Stiles is twenty-two, the baby can chew through steel and Derek would propose in a heartbeat if heâd any chance at all with Stiles.
Derek is resigned to this situation being terrible (chp. 1)
