LIVING PROOF.
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the day where upwards of 1.5 million Armenians we massacred by Turkish soldiers. Men, Women and Children we slaughtered in their homes, and sent to concentration camps on death marches in a form of ethnic cleansing. My great grandmother watched her family get slaughters and managed to survive by hiding. Recently I found out that she was on a death march and met her husband. Out of the goodness in someones heart, they were helped and escaped to America where she lived until her 90's. It was in America where she taught her family to work hard and never forget your heritage. For years my grandmother volunteered to teach the next generation to keep our culture alive and to raise awareness of the genocide. I used the word genocide because I'm unaware of what else to call the forced 'disappearance' of 1.5 million people because of religious and ethnic disputes from a country with a current population just under 3 million.  in 2008, Obama promised to stand by the Armenian people and recognize the events as they are. But due to 'political' and trade agreements, he has not stood by his word. Today, we recognize those innocent people lost and push to increase awareness in hope that one day those responsible will be held accountable. You see, the one thing about Armenians is that we bring the word stubborn to a whole new level. We won’t stop.Â
I just saw your poem on POCproblems and I loved it. Also, I'm a bit ashamed to say that before reading that, I had no idea that Armenian people weren't white....
Hey there. Thanks for contacting me. Don't feel ashamed for not knowing this. There are a fuckload of problems under which Armenians are ethnically/racially categorized and our presence in the media is either un/misrepresented. Also, physical Anthropological research or anything cool virtually has never been done on us. Just (white/ignorant) peoples' opinions of us, and it's seen as more valid than our own experiences. I've spoken to Armenians who proudly identify as white, and not a minority (even if they are visibly not white), and others who believe that shit's absurd. I work in a really diverse community and most often I can't tell the difference between Latinos and Armenians. Physically, lots of Arm@s can pass as Arab, Indian, and Hispanic. And I've met Armenians who I thought were undoubtedly white before I heard the way they pronounced their "d's" and "th's". Also, there are physical differences between white men and armos. I can spot one from just the back of their head. So basically some are brown as fuck and others are white as fuck. More importantly what can we take from this? For example, is a white-washed/ Brown Armenian still less white than a light-skinned Armenian who only knows a very tight Middle Eastern way of living? These are the  questions I think about every day, and I've learned that there is no answer. Armenians aren't white, but we aren't non-white simply because we're not black or most of us don't have "Asian" eyes. Please take a look at this video. Armenian students at UCSB talk about their personal experiences with Genocide. If you explore the racial diversity in each of these students, some more white-looking and some less. But they all still have the commonality of being Armenian, and that's more important than any bullshit western/binary construction of race (black/white/yellow) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZitEKEAZY8Â
