“Fall Guys and Among Us prove you don’t need good graphics to be a good game”
But like the graphics are good for those games ???
I mean yeah they’re not hyper-realistic or anything like that, but they both have interesting styles that are consistent and work based on the atmosphere of the game. Fall Guys is a whacky multiplayer game inspired by Takeshi’s Castle and Among Us is like Secret Hitler in outer space. So to fit with this, Fall Guys has bright and colourful graphics to match its wackiness, while Among Us has simplistic graphics, yes, but in a cartoony style, with funny animations and a bit of a dark edge to fit in with the sabotage and outer space themes.
Just because a game has graphics that aren’t 100% true-to-life doesn’t mean they’re bad. This isn’t the case of Starfox, which has bad graphics by modern standards, or Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, which is filled with graphical glitches and is quite frankly unfinished, or even something like The Slaughtering Grounds, which has an inconsistent style because of all the pre-made assets used in the game. On the opposite side, look at games like Arma II or the latest Call of Duty title. They have some pretty realistic graphics but the styles are uninspired beyond trying to simulate real life. I hate this idea that in video games, any graphical style that isn’t done in a realistic way is bad. Sunset Overdrive is a fantastic game graphically, but that is stylised and cartoony (a la Jet Set Radio but not as cell-shaded or cartoony) and I’d fight anyone who says the graphics in that game are horrible.
So yes, graphics aren’t everything. But what seems to be forgotten is that just because the game doesn’t have realistic graphics doesn’t mean the graphics are bad. What makes graphics or artwork good is more than just how much it looks like the real world, it’s also about style.
