Review: Absolute Batman: Ark M Special #1 - "A History of Arkham"

A story of the history of Gotham and how twisted it becomes over the years is told by Amadeus Arkham who seems to be in the process of selling the property to a potential buyer. However, all isn't what it seems.

Positives Told through the eyes of Dr. Amadeus Arkham, the very beginning of this story begins in tragedy. With the sudden death of his parents, Arkham was placed in an orphanage until he turned 18. Upon leaving, he dedicates his life to helping the mentally challenged people of Gotham City. I must admit that this in itself was a noble attempt, but it goes wrong in so many ways. Through a series of misfortunes and untimely events, Arkham is soon forced to sell the Asylum. As he talks about the history of his former home, the buyer seems to look really familiar to Arkham. However, once Amadeus makes this realization it's too late and this mysterious man vanishes into the night.

Negatives I have no complaints about this issue.

Verdict Overall, Absolute Batman: Ark M Special was a great read, and the reveal of who the buyer was is unexpected. It seems that the darkness of Gotham was always there, even in its early days, and sadly, Amadeus became a part of that history. It's revealed at the end that his journal isn't just a telling of events or a cautionary tale about Gotham, but it serves as a testament to one man who seems to be at the center of all the evil--The Joker.   Score: 5/5

Scott Snyder and Jock reunite for this epic tale in the Absolute Universe!

Positives Absolute Batman #15 starts with Alfred talking to Bruce about the dark history of the Grimm family -- an old family that apparently made their fortune through comedy. Young Joseph Grimm I starts his living as a young street performer, but eventually he climbs his way out of the gutter and into the high life of an elite socialite. Over the progress of five generations, Jack Grimm V is the latest in the family line. A billionaire who owns private islands all over the world, performs philanthropy work around the planet, and also occasionally funds a war or two. It seems that Jack is responsible for not only the problems in Gotham, but perhaps also across the entire planet.

Negatives I have no complaints about this issue.

Verdict Absolute Batman #15 gives you a chilling first look at the history of Scott Snyder's latest rendition of The Joker. Here in the Absolute universe, The Joker is a cold, calculating villain who has the wealth and resources to do anything he wants. It's revealed that he was the one behind Bane, Black Mask, the construction of Ark M, and more. These islands are revealed to be his private hunting grounds, for not just animals, but also for people. I must admit that I'm loving this version of The Joker and I can't wait for his first encounter with Batman.   Score: 5/5

Review: Absolute Batman #13 - "Abomination: Part Five"

Will he be able to overcome this unstoppable behemoth, or will he be trapped in Ark-M forever? Also, Batman and Catwoman have a "date night," which means beating up some thugs for information.

Positives Selina Kyle shows up to help out Bruce and get him back on his feet, and Alfred is not happy with her helping. Their lifelong friendship considered, Bruce reluctantly agrees to let Selina help. Bruce has lost enough with Harvey, Waylon, Oswald, and Edward all being transformed into something hideous thanks to Ark M, and especially to Bane, who tortured each one of them personally. Bruce is trying to look out for Selina's well-being here, and her safety, but she's not having it. She lost them as her friends too, and she refuses to lose Bruce.

Negatives I have no complaints about this issue.

Verdict Absolute Batman #13 is a great read and really explores the relationship between Bruce and Selina. You can tell they are truly two sides of the same coin in a sense -- and they both know it. They also seem to know that they can never be together because of their respective costumed lifestyles, but they still make it work on their terms. In the end, the two take on the Red Hood gang, led by the notorious hacker Harley Quinn, but when she hears of their plans to take down Bane and Ark M, she's apparently all on board. Honestly, the ending in itself is what gives this book a five-star rating. Batman, using Harley's technology, hacks into Gotham's communications and calls out Bane, telling him that he's coming, and he wants all of Gotham to see the beat-down. That was a pretty epic ending to say the least! Can't wait for the next issue.   Score: 5/5
