As he took his shirt off, Fred caught herself staring, and tried to bring herself back to herself, the feel of the wind and the sunshine and the linen of her swimsuit coverup and away from the fact that John was watching her, a little, out of the corner of his eye, like he wanted to make sure she had seen him shirtless.
He came to my concert in Cannes, and asked me out afterwards, and he really likes me, and he's an actual rock star, and and now I'm on this boat with his band in the Mediterranean.
How is any of this real?

Hey Cari, could I ask 8) How do they communicate with each other? Are there any recurring phrases or gestures unique to their relationship? and 20) What is their best memory together? -- for Hazel and Jack please? Thank you!!
8) How do they communicate with each other? Are there any recurring phrases or gestures unique to their relationship?
i think the nature of the job requires a shorthand that's half-army lingo, half them filling in the rest, and that morphs into their own thing entirely after they realize that the other person isn't a talker, either. it's a lot of nonverbal communication — glances and nods, touches (in private) — and most people can't keep up because hazel is almost always smiling and jack is almost always frowning and that makes them unreadable to others. they can speak in half-sentences knowing the other will pick up their train of thought. (except when they can't or don't want to and when that happens, jack chooses silence and hazel chooses to say it aloud.)
they love talking to each other, though, don't get it twisted. they learn each other even when it seems there should be nothing to left to learn. that comes through question and answer — opinions, memories, random thoughts that pop into their head. they can talk forever but they're also comfortable in long silences.
if you count food as a language, then they also have food-as-love-as-language. he gets her a coffee every time he gets one and vice versa. i imagine there are days when they RACE to make the other person dinner, to pick up the other's favorite snack. the war did scary things to their appetite, and it's important to get it back together.
20) What is their best memory together?
wooooooooooow what a question. i'd say... their first dance at the officers' club + what comes after. i'm actually writing that right now as the second part of in the cold spring. it's taking me forever and we're probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through and it's 4.5k, my longest ever fic by like 1k+ words. so this might not be ready until december if i'm quite honest but it's being WRITTEN and it's ON ITS WAY.
You don't know me so maybe this sounds weird but you are literally doing God's work with all these Tab gifsets
Hahaha, that doesn’t sound weird at all, great to hear from you! ❤️ I’m happy to hear someone’s enjoying all the Tab-related content I’m putting out.. He’s a bit of a weakness of mine right now and I’m indulging to the max, lol. Was kinda worried people’d go “oh not another one”, haha, so thank you for the reassurance!
(Ah I love how functional and reliable tumblr's messaging system is!) Basically, I wondered if you'd read 'Where Poppies Blow' by John Lewis Stempel? It's a natural history of the First World War, exploring the relationship between British soldiers and animals and plants/ flowers. It's been a couple of years now since I've read it in full, but I remember how interesting and moving I found it -- and I thought it might be relevant to your interests!! xx
oh my gosh that sounds beautiful. i’ll absolutely have to check it out, thank you so much my love! that’s absolutely me - soldiers and nature and animals? you just looked inside my soul. thank you again!!!! ♡

Could I please request 6) things you said in the shade of a tree for Vivian and Adam? Thank you! 🥰
The airfield was quiet again.
The planes had just gone out for the day's mission, climbing and roaring into the skies in a stream of engine noise and smoke. Adam was stationed at the briefing hut before the mission to catch any last-minute additions to the sick list, and then it was back to the medical hut for a review of the bed cases and a progress update.
He placed his clipboard back into its shelf and stretched, grabbing for his cigarette case and lighter and heading outside into the sunshine. Charts would have to wait. It was bright, after the cool dimness of the wards and their sloped ceilings, and there was a kind of warm relief in the sunshine. Far across the field he could hear the noise of engines being repaired and the mechanics laughing and talking, a faint twitter of birdsong, the distant rumble of trucks.
He would take silence while he could get it - though for all that he dreaded the noise of the flightline and the noise of the return, there was still discomfort in the silence. Silence meant that you were waiting for what came next, that you were in the in-between.
There was a stand of trees slightly down the tarmac, and his smile curved a little more seeing a blue uniform coat, standing in the shade.
"Afraid I'll have to report you to the Red Cross for slacking," Adam said, smile as wide as it would go as he stepped into the shade and gave the woman standing there a slight bump to the elbow - the most intimacy the daylight might afford.
"Same goes for you and the medical corps," Vivian shot right back, smiling as well. "Bus is having the oil changed. What's your excuse?"
"Charts could wait, sunshine couldn't."
She made a brief noise of agreement and returned her gaze out over the airfield, watching a group of off-duty aircrew play a game of catch. Adam lit up one of his cigarettes and exhaled, the smoke calming him, a little. The air smelled of late summer hay and, now, tobacco. "Does it all ever make you feel old?"
Adam turned to look at her, his expression slightly amused. "I'm not sure I like that question, Miss Arsenault."
She looked up at him and made a face. "Not because you - oh, stop it, that's not what I said," she hissed, shoving him playfully while he snorted and recovered his footing. "Do they -" she gestured here across the field to the game of catch - "ever make you feel old?"
"The pilots?"
"The new pilots."
Adam felt himself stall for a moment and realized she was right. "Oh."
"I'd see it at the flak house, sometimes," she started, looking out at the field. "They'd come in, nerves shot, eight, ten, twelve missions, couldn't look you in the eye, lying to anyone who would listen that they were fine, and they were old and young, all at once. And you felt old, because you knew they were lying, because you'd lied, too. Now I'm getting it here, too - passing out donuts before the flight. The new ones flirt and want to make you smile. The old hands want the same thing they get every morning - breakfast and routine."
He wanted to embrace her, in that moment, though he knew he shouldn't - the sun was shining and they could both be easily seen. In a few hours they would be back, those new pilots, eyes wide, hands trembling, mouths speechless at what they had seen, numb to noise and sense, too stunned to notice they were cut or bleeding or burned. They were old now, like Vivian had said. And caring for them, he was older still.
"Yeah," he said, agreeing. "Yeah, they do." He considered a moment. "And you know what makes me feel young?" he asked, watching her turn towards him, half suspicious. "Sunshine. And kissing you."
It was worth it just to see her try to frown at him again and fail miserably. "Adam."
Can you blame me, he wanted to say, knowing it would spoil it. Making you smile makes me feel young, too.
I’d like to know some more about Grace Spadolo 👀 can I ask, please, from the OC questions list:
5) how do they typically dress? does their wardrobe lean more towards practicality or aesthetics?
6) how do they wear their hair? do they care a lot how their hair looks?
15) how big or small is their family? who did they live with growing up? do they live with anyone now?
17) how did they spend their summers/free time as a child?
28) how do they show that they care about someone? how do they express that they don’t like someone?
Thank you!! 💕
5) how do they typically dress? does their wardrobe lean more towards practicality or aesthetics?
There are several sides to Grace. There is Grazia, the shopgirl, who wears what her grandmother and her mother and her aunts want her to wear - high collars, longer skirts, flat sensible shoes and aprons, very practical clothes for stocking shelves and running the register and staying away from getting her bottom pinched by men who are buying a box of chocolate for their secretaries. Ordinary Wren Spadolo loves the smartness of her uniform and the feeling of power she gets from real stockings and heels and fitting in with everyone when they've all got the same thing on. Grace, however - Grace envies her school-friends with their lipsticks and loves the feeling of silk hose and perfume and comes to realize pretty quickly how much people will or won't pay attention to you based on how you're dressed. Her adult style tends towards the practical, just for economic reasons, but she loves beautiful things and takes joy in dressing up when she can.
6) how do they wear their hair? do they care a lot how their hair looks?
Grace's hair is beautiful - it's long and dark and just the slightest bit wavy and her mother nearly cried when she cut it but the navy wasn't going to take her if she couldn't do it up into a regulation bob and off her collar, so off it went! Since she's been overseas, it's gotten a bit long again, but it's not as if undercover operatives have a lot of time to get their hair cut and set.
This is one of the things that she is the most proud of about her appearance, and while she might not like to admit this aloud, she does care, and it would behoove a future romantic partner to compliment it and possibly run their hands through it and/or help her wash it.
15) how big or small is their family? who did they live with growing up? do they live with anyone now?
answered here!
17) how did they spend their summers/free time as a child?
Working. Grace's family runs a confectionery and ice cream parlor in a seaside resort town, so it's all hands on deck when the tourist hordes arrive for the summer. The slow season was winter, to test new recipes and do repairs on the shop. Grace spent a lot of her spare time doing odd jobs for other businesses in town to help her save money to leave Margate. I'm not sure what she would have done if the war hadn't happened, but she wasn't going to stay in a small seaside town forever.
28) how do they show that they care about someone? how do they express that they don’t like someone?
Grace teases, to show she cares. It's a very specific kind of flirting, the little jokes you make over the counter as you're tying up a purchase or counting change. And she's very good at it - she's been doing it her entire life, and she's a pretty girl who works in a vacation town. She's gotten a lot of practice. But if she doesn't like you? She'll get very quiet, and very pointed or short with her answers. I also think she holds on to physical objects - keeping her hands steady on the counter, or the back of a chair.
