honestly tumblr likes to harp on brutalist metal-and-glass atrocities but literally any of them are more pleasing and less painful to look at than whatever shit ledoux was on when he designed chaun.
and honestly it’s not even just chaun it’s like even in his other work he has literally anticipated every single bad thing about brutalism with none of its redeeming qualities. and more arches. which looks incredibly stupid.
almost every single one of his projects either look like some brutalist atrocity but somehow MORE pretentious OR they just look like mcmansion hell.

Liberal Arts Building in the Evening, 2024
I've always loved this school campus. It's far from the main reason I chose to go here. But I did grow up here. Unfortunately, the school has no appreciation good architecture, and all of the new buildings they are building are radically different in appearance, and they DO NOT MATCH, which any good architect is supposed to do. Unfortunately, the client determines what gets built, and so this campus is slowly mauled, its gardens turned to modern monstrosities, and the tradition and standard is erased.

knowledge is a burden. i see pictures of a house online, and someone calls it a lovely little demonstration of the queen anne victorian style. i get irrationally angry about it. because it's not queen anne victorian. it's richardsonian romanesque revival. so then i close my laptop and i try to remind myself that it's stupid to get so bent out of shape over a simple misattribution of contrived style terms. but then i get even angrier because i can't help but remember that queen anne victorian is basically the very definition of a contrived style term, because if 'victorian' implies the style was popular during the reign of queen victoria, then why in the world is queen anne involved? especially because the traditional queen anne style looks nothing like the queen anne victorian style. why is that? oh! oh. it's because america wanted to sell houses and plans so they just slapped a fancy-sounding name on the style they invented. queen anne victorian. sounds historical huh? queen anne victorian. maybe even regal? queen anne victorian. i look outside and i see a street full of cape cods. they're all modified one way or another. everyone's replaced the original siding or popped out the roofs. i like my street though. i like how it looks. it doesn't have to be historically accurate. what is a house anyway? queen anne victorian. i hate how they look honestly. i prefer second empire. which is silly too. french and british? really? it doesn't matter. i go to sleep and dream of richardsonian romanesque revivals. i hate them too.

The Farnsworth House and The Richards Medical Research Laboratories are both trash from a practical standpoint and the fact that they are still lauded as "high architecture" annoys me to no end. Did Mies and Kahn design some cool architecture? Yes. Did that other stuff function? I don't remember because I remember little from my history class other than my annoyance at these structures. But regardless I'm not saying that all their stuff is bad. They just did very poorly from a functionality aspect with these two. And if the occupants hate it? It's not! Good! Architecture!!!! If it doesn't work as it's intended to it's nothing more than a glorified sculpture that you can occupy. I am very much in the form follows function camp because as much as it's really cool to see something that LOOKS nice, if it doesn't function well what's the point?
Design struggles
Currently working on the final design for my architecture thesis project. My main struggle is to create a physical building form our of an abstract idea. Tell me how do you make a building participate?? You can put walls to make people go through a certain way. But that doesn't mean the building looks like your concept. What is a concept anyway?? I thought the concept thing is already in there??

Ahahahaha I haven't slept in more than 24 hours because I was too busy doing a physical architecture model in one night that should've been done over a week's time but my teacher decided that we should be only given a week to do the research, design process, powerpoint, 3D modeling, and physical model. Fuck my life. AND IT'S STILL NOT DONE.
