Arc Two 119
Nyota was glad to have Lumenâs shoulder to lean on subtly as they returned to the medbay. Hadley caught her eye and grinned.
âYour hands are shaking there, Captain. You have too much coffee?â
Nyotaâs best answer was a grimace, which earned her a knowing laugh.
Lumen chuckled and nudged Nyota along. âCome on, maâam. Next one downâs yours.â
âAs you say.â His warm hands were very soothing as weariness and caffeine jitters waged their private war over her joints. The heat worked its way between the combatants and she relaxed with a quiet sigh.
Lumen patted her shoulder. âThat does it, eh? Sit tight and Iâll get ya some water so ya donât get a noggin-cracker tomorrow.â
âThank you.â
Nyota watched him head over to the sink, playing over the eveningâs events in her head. As he handed the full glass to her, she led in with a small smile. âSo, you and Namina, then?â
âI canât tell if youâre just playinâ with me, or if ya actually ainât surprised, Captain.â Lumen chuckled warmly, but there was an odd little flicker to his glow that Nyota hadnât seen there before.
âIâll let you decide that one.â She took a long drink and paused. âYou donât seem happy, Lumen.â
âWell, ainât yer eye sharp?â He waved her off half-heartedly. âDonât ya mind it, Captain. Jusâ wishful thinkinâ.â
The words hung in the air, and drew her question out slow and soft, like a sliver of glass. âThereâs more to this than I see, isnât there?â
Lumen made a quiet static sound. âSure is, maâam. See, it ainât me and Fern-fangs. I think itâs him and Eldie.â
Nyota took this in slowly and carefully. This was delicate ground, and with what Lumen had told her before of his hesitant, too-slow interest in Sonnyâs mother⌠âHe has been bolder with her,â she said, keeping her voice as close to neutral as she could. âNot really reckless like he is with the rest of us. Showing off, nearly.â
Lumen nodded. âThat is showinâ off, for a floran. When they got someone they want to stick by, they get allâŚâ He waved his hands with another noise of frustrated static. âCareful-like, I guess. Show off them fangs but make sure ya donât eat dirt with them, does that make sense?â
Nyota nodded and set the glass down. âI think I see it, then. How oddâŚâ She chuckled quietly. âHow exactly unlike humans.â It stung, deep in her chest, as she realized she did not know what it was like for apex. Not what it was supposed to be like.
Lumen flickered and dimmed. âThatâs right, maâam. It sure is funny.â He brightened a little again, in a way that felt like a forced smile. âSo, I thought Iâd show Eldie how itâs done a bit. Got SAIL to tell me a few tricks, offered to help. She ainât as stubborn as some folks I know, see.â
Nyota took the friendly jab with a smileâLumen needed it right now. âHas she learned well?â
He snorted and made his plasma fizz like a shaken soda. âGolly but I hope not. Ya heard the fool I did out there. Shucks but Iâm rusty, ainât I⌠used to be right good at this sort of thing when I was Sonnyâs age. But that was half a century ago, I guess. Ainât short even by a novaâs age. Still, it made her laugh, and thatâs alright.â
Ah. There it was. âYou want to be happy for them,â Nyota said gently.
Lumen nodded, just once, and left his head bowed. âI sure do, maâam.â
She offered a hand. âBut itâs hard when you feel sad for yourself.â
He sighed and took her hand. âA hundred years old is too dang old to feel like this.â
âThatâs what I said about twenty-eight,â Nyota replied solemnly. âWhich one, then? Or both?â
He hummed with a deep note of appreciation that she hadnât heard in a long time. âBoth indeed. Ya do see bright. Thatâs what got me so riled, I think. Canât have both, can I?â
âWhy not?â Nyota looked straight at him as he straightened up with a startled whirr. âApex tend toward pairs, but not always. And Floran have never quite followed the ârulesâ that others might set out for them. Go ahead. Ask them.â She gripped his hand tighter. âLumen. You really do have nothing to lose.â
âYa really sure?â He was shaking a little, with laughter and with something out of her reach.
Nyota folded her other hand over his. âYouâre afraid of losing them. Listen to me. I have loved and lost too many times, and I think you have too, havenât you?â
âNow that ainât fair, readinâ me so,â he protested, his usually warm orange glow muted by swirling, confused, unhappy clouds.
Nyota gave him a sharp look and he quieted down. âLumen,â she said, âwe may lose either way, even if we donât reach. Why not reach, then?â She put a hand over her heart, over the pale scar. âBelieve me. You do have nothing to lose.â
âGolly.â He broke off with a sigh, like metal relaxing as the heat went out of it, but the heat stayed in his hands and voice. âWell. Well, ainât it the purdiest irony for my captain to be tellinâ me to follow my heart?â He reached up as if aiming to flick her nose, keeping back just enough that she felt the barest whisper of static from his shell. âYa know I ainât got a heart, right?â
She smiled, her own heart so warm with the mischief and moment. âYour brand, Lumen. Have you looked in the mirror?â
He might have been Sonny for a moment there, laugh whistling almost as high as her teakettle chimes, bright as a fire. âDarnit, ya got me there. Tarnation, maâam. And thank ya kindly. I ainât ready. But ya watch. Iâm gonna try.â
âI came here willingly. But this is...âÂ
âToo much?â

Seeing Sanji quite literally in his element is beautiful. Like you can see him embracing his inner child and, honestly, I fucking adore this show for promoting that.
