Content warnig for major character death, descriptions of gore, implied drugging, and objectification
(I dont think the last one is very strong in this chapter, but I tried to hint at it, and it'll be more prevalent later, so im putting the warning here)
Glory waited anxiously for Clay and Tsunami to return. It was stupid of them, she thought, to risk everything for her. She didn't matter, not really. That's why Kestrel planned to kill her in the first place. But they had done it anyway, of course.
As morning crept in, Clay and Tsunami returned. Followed by an army of SkyWings. It was foolish of them to risk so much for her. Now they were all in danger too. Her scales glittered purple and grey and pale green. They were wrapped in heavy chains, and then marched off to their next prison, the Sky Palace.
They were separated from the others when they arrived. Clay, Starflight, and Tsunami had been flown up high, and though she hadn't been able to watch, she was sure they had been taken to the pillars that rose high into the sky. Glory and Sunny were marched into what must be the throne room.
“Hmm, now what to do with you two? Certainly you're both much too interesting to just be thrown in my arena.” The queen mocked, studying them harshly. “Oh, I know! You, odd little sandwing, would make the perfect gift for Queen Burn. She just loves odd things, you see. Guards, fetch that cage I've been saving.” She turned to Glory then, watching as her scales shimmered red and black and green. “My my, you're quite dazzling, aren't you? The perfect addition to my rather boring work of art.” She flicked her tail toward a pale marble carving of a tree.
“Hey!” Sunny squeaked “You can't do that! Glory isn't a piece of art!”
“I can do whatever I like! I am the queen, and this is my kingdom!”
The guards returned then, with a large, gilded bird cage. They grabbed Sunny and began to force her inside. She fought and squirmed, but there were just too many guards to fight. After a moment, the cage was locked, and some guards flew down a hall with Sunny. They moved for her next, pulling her towards the ‘tree’ and binding her to it with fragile chains. She didn't fight- here, surrounded by guards, it would only earn her further restraints. So she would wait for a real opportunity to strike. She would wish she hadn't, later, when the sickly sweet fruit they gave her made her brain slow and her limbs heavier than any chains. Her scales glimmered in shades of orange and red, which earned her nothing but the ogling looks of the skywing queen and guards.
Hours later, when the sun was high in the sky, the guards rolled Glory's tree onto a balcony. She felt colour explode across her scales as the sunlight hit them. She felt hundreds of eyes on her as Scarlet bragged about her “New art”. Two dragons stood on the sands of the arena below. A sandwing, and an oddly copper, glowy SkyWing. An announcer introduced them. Horizon of the sandwings, and Peril of the skywings. They were to fight to the death, the announcer said. But the fight was… odd. Horizon was bigger. That and his tail bard gave him the clear advantage. But instead of taking that advantage, he ran. What could he have been so scared of?
Then, Peril cut him off. He turned, but his tail caught on Peril's arm, and burst into flames. A firescales, Glory recalled. The chase continued for a moment, before Horizon threw himself at Peril, and the rest of him burst into flames too. So, the skywing queen has a weapon that no one can touch, let alone beat in a fight. Against her better judgement, Glory felt a strange connection to her. Peril, who the queen used to inspire fear, and herself, used by the queen to inspire awe.

Glory could do nothing but watch as the icewing sunk his claws into Clay's throat, scales dazzling through shades of red and pale green and deep, dark purple. This was all because of her. The dragonets only tried to escape their guardians for her sake. And their escape attempt was the only reason the skywings found and captured them.
Clay thrashed, blood bubbling out of the holes Fjord was clawing in his neck. She was sure, somewhere deeper than knowledge, that if she could just open her mouth she could spit death upon Fjord and save her brother. But she couldn't rise from her tree, could barely open her mouth enough to speak for the thin wire that held it and the heavy fog of exhaustion that hung over her. She was sure, if she had fire, she could melt them effortlessly. But as it was, she was useless. Harmless. And unable save Clay from the icewing who ripped out his throat.
“And our winner is Fjord of the IceWings! Perhaps these legendary dragonets are all they're cracked up to be, hmm? We'll see if the others fare any better in their matches!"
Her scales descended into shades of dark, dull blues and greys. And though she would never admit it, tears welled in her eyes, and splashed on the balcony below.

Kestrel was put in the arena the next morning. The guards dragged her out while the queen went on dramatically about a trial and treason. Kestrel had disobeyed the queen's orders by trying to escape with a firescales dragonet after being ordered to kill it. Frankly, Glory thought Kestrel would deserve whatever punishment the Queen gave her, after how she had treated the dragonets. Apparently, the firescales disagreed. She interrupted the trial, calling upon a “champions shield" to “stand for her mother.” Scarlet certainly didn't like that. She turned on the wingless skywing, grabbing him roughly and preparing to take flight, before she seemed to realise something, and let him fall onto the sand with a thump.
“Very well then. My champion will stand for the prisoner. Tomorrow, she will fight a dragon of my choosing. If she wins, then Kestrel goes free. And if she loses, then I suppose I'll need a new champion. But we'll get to execute Kestrel right away! Either way, it will be a brilliantly bloody day for Queen Burn and I.” The queen spoke cruelly, and Glory guessed that she planned to make Peril fight someone she wouldn't want to kill.
Burn arrived as the sun neared the horizon. They were in a feast hall, Queen Scarlet, Burn, and some of their generals sitting around a large table covered in delicacies. Sunny lay in the gilded cage that dangled above it, seemingly giving up struggling and yelling for the moment. Burn ogled her, eyes tracing her the same way the skywing's traced Glory. When she saw Glory, Burn complained about how frivolous the Sky Kingdom was, and Glory couldn't help but agree.
Eventually, the allies wanted to discuss war plans, which Burn refused to do with Glory nearby. The guards rolled her away through the palace, to a secluded stone tower. A tower inhabited by a glowy, coppery, skywing.
“Why are you bringing her in here? This is my room!” Peril objected
The guards, keeping their distance, shrugged and said “Queens orders,” before flying off.
“Ugh, she's always keeping things in my room. Anyway: Hi, I'm Peril. I've never seen a dragon who can change colour like you before.”
“Glory.” She responded. “I've never met a dragon with fire in her scales before.”
“That’s right!” Peril preened. “I'm the most dangerous dragon in all of Pyrrhia! I can win any fight her majesty gives to me!”
“You like killing dragons?”
“Of course I do! It's what I'm good at, and it makes Queen Scarlet happy.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“UGH.” Peril groaned. “It might as well be. And it doesn't MATTER, anyway. I'm listening to the queen, like everyone does.”
“Apparently you didn't listen to her about staying away from Kestrel's trial.” Glory said in rebuttal.
“I never watch the trials, because they're boring. But Queen Scarlet told me I couldn't watch this one. I knew there had to be something going on, and apparently, I was RIGHT. Kestrel is my mother! I can't just let the Queen kill her.”
“Not a very good one.” Glory commented. “It's probably for the best that she didn't raise you.”
“You know Kestrel? What is she like”
“Violent. Judgemental. Angry all the time.”
“Hm. Well, even if you don't think she deserves it, I'm still going to fight for her. I can't just let my Mother die. And I'll win any fight the Queen gives me, anyway.”
“I get the feeling she’ll give you a fight you don't want to win.”
“Not sure how she'd manage that. I'll save my mother. And then I'LL decide if I want her in my life or not.”
“Good luck,” Glory shrugged.

They put Tsunami in the arena next. Her opponent was odd. They didn't bring a dragon from the pillars. Instead, they dragged a disheveled SeaWing from somewhere beneath the palace- probably a dungeon. Gill. They had deprived him of water for months. Glory wasn't very worried, Tsunami could put up quite the fight. As expected, she quickly pinned him. She shouted to the arena that she had clearly won, that she didn't need to kill him. Of course, the crowd didn't listen. And when Queen Scarlet made a scathing comment about the dragonets not having the stomach for this war, Tsunami snapped his neck. Glory knew she had the stomach for it, too, if only she wasn't so weighed down by an exhaustion set deep in her bones by sickly sweet fruit and paper thin restraints.
Usually, when a dragon was victorious in the arena they were taken back to their pillar to fight another day. But it seemed like Scarlet wanted to be rid of the dragonets quickly, because instead the guards brought Tsunami's next opponent. Starflight. They didn't fight each other, obviously. They were just thrilled to see each other alive and be reunited, after days on those pillars. It didn't last though. When they failed to be entertaining, Queen Scarlet released four icewings from the dungeon, and had Tsunami and Starflight fight them instead. Or tried to, at any rate, because black wings quickly descended upon the arena, the nightwings slaughtering the icewings, and taking Starflight. At least he was safe from the arena, but Glory didn't particularly trust any plans the nightwings had for him either. She had an odd, sinking feeling, that she would not see Starflight again, for a long, long time. Her scales drifted through shades of deep purple and dark red.
The Queen wasn't happy either, roaring about her hatching day plans being ruined. She ordered the guards to put Tsunami back on her pillar and clear the arena of the icewing bodies, declaring it was time for the champions shield.
“My champion, Peril, has asked to stand for Kestrel, and fight a dragon of my choosing. If she wins, then Kestrel is free to go. If not, we get to execute Kestrel after all, and I suppose I'd need a new champion.
“My chosen opponent for Peril is: Osprey of the Skywings!” Scarlet declared with a cruel glint in her eye, as the guards lowered the old, wingless skywing onto the arena sands. The look on Peril's face told Glory she had been right about Scarlet making Peril fight someone she didn't want to kill.
“WHAT?” Peril shouted “I can't fight Osprey, he-”
“Sure you can. He's the opponent I selected. It's either his life, or Kestrel's and yours. That's how the champions shield works, after all,” Scarlet mocked.
Osprey sat on the sand, placidly. “I won't fight you, Peril. It's all right, perhaps a mother would be better for you than an old advisor like me.”
“I don't WANT to kill you!”
“Well, I certainly won't be killing you.” Osprey reasoned
“And I won't be letting either of you leave that arena until one of you is a corpse. Less talking and more killing, if you please.”
With that, Osprey began walking towards Peril. And, for the first time Glory had seen, Peril stepped away from her opponent.
Osprey spoke to Peril, too quietly for Glory to hear. And then, with a pained expression, Peril hugged Osprey. Instantly, he was on fire, and in moments he was nothing but ash.
“And the winner is, my champion, Peril. Kestrel will be pardoned for her crimes.”
There were more fights, roars and blasts of fire filling the air until the sun sank low in the sky. But Glory didn't watch them. She watched instead, as Peril sat forlornly on a stone platform near the queen's balcony, wishing she could have been even a fraction as dangerous as Peril. Because if she had been, maybe her friends wouldn't have doomed themselves trying to save her.
