âOhhh, I donât think I can do this,â Aldertail moaned, pacing back and forth in the Healerâs den as her tail twitched anxiously. It was taking all her self-control and the continued momentum of her pacing to keep her from running her tongue over her legs. They were mostly furred these days, only spotting a patch here or there when her mind got too loud, which was rarer now that the Clans had brokered a truce with the city.Â
Sitting patiently beside the herb stores, Oddstripe sorted out the dried and dead leaves from his stock, his eyes returning politely to her whenever he didnât need to look at his paws. If sheâd been in a better headspace, sheâd have been impressed by how often he could pick out the poor leaves just by touch. Beside him sat Barleybee, sorting the dead leaves into neat bundles to be carried off later.Â
She said, âSure you can! Iâll be right there with you whenever you need help, okay?âÂ
âWhat would Snailstepâs name have been if she was raised in her motherâs clan?â
Firebright would never be able to get past the character creation section of an MMO.
Her warrior name would have probably been Palelight.
Viperpaw is Firebrightâs apprentice, and Gingerpaw is his brother and the medicine cat apprentice

Burning Water Chapter 1 part 3
It was moonhigh of the next night when Bluestar exited her den and made the customary call for a meeting.
Greystripeâs  ears  flicked excitedly as  he  heard Bluestarâs  call. Â
âA  naming  ceremony?â  he  meowed. âIt must  be  Longtail  getting  his  first  apprentice.  Heâs  been  dropping  hints  for days.â  He  bounded over to  join  the cats  gathering  at  the  edge  of the  clearing, and, still itching  with  frustration, Fireheart  followed. A small  black-and-white  kit  padded into  the  clearing. His  soft  paws  made  no sound on the  hard earth. Swiftkit  walked  toward the  Highrock  with  his  pale  eyes  lowered and Fireheart  almost  expected  to  see  him  tremble. He definitely wasn't very eager to be an apprentice, though Goldenflower  radiated pride for her son. Â
Longtail  wonât  be  impressedâŚ
Fireheart  remembered the cream tomâs scorn when  Fireheart had arrived at camp for the  first  time. The  warrior had taunted  him  viciously  on his  first  day with  the  Clan, mocking  his  kittypet  origins.  Fireheart  had kept in mind how Longtail ended up, but he couldn't help his current distaste for the warrior.
âFrom  this  day forward,â  Bluestar  meowed, staring  down at  the  kit,  âuntil  he  has  earned  his  warrior name,  this  apprentice  will be  called  Swiftpaw.â
There  was  no flash of determination in  the  black-and-white  kit  as  he  looked up at  his  leader. Instead his  amber eyes  were  wide  with  anxiety. Fireheart  watched  as  Longtail  padded toward his  new  apprentice and Bluestar went on.
âLongtail,  you were  Darkstripeâs  apprentice.  He  taught  you well,  and you have become  a  fierce  and loyal  warrior. I hope  you will pass  some  of  these  qualities  on  to  Swiftpaw.â
Fireheart  searched  Longtailâs  face  for an  expression of disdain as  he  looked down at  Swiftpaw. But  the warriorâs  eyes  softened  as  he  met  his  new  apprenticeâs  gaze, and gently  the  two Clan  cats  touched noses.
âItâs okay, youâre  doing  fine,â  Longtail  murmured  encouragingly. Â
Good. At least Longtail wouldn't turn out like Darkstripe and Tigerclaw. He had too much compassion. He  glanced around the  rest  of the  Clan as  they  began to  murmur congratulations  to  the  new  apprentice. Â
The ginger tom  scowled and shook himself out. He  was  a  part  of ThunderClan now, he'd proven himself early on and no one doubted his commitment to the Clan.
âWelcome to apprenticehood, Swiftpaw. Here's hoping I do a better job at seeing you through to your warrior name.â

âFloodstrike, dear, could you please not tear the moss apart like that?âÂ
Floodstrike looked up at his father and then down at his paws where he had been clawing and tearing the edges of one of the sickbeds to pieces. Guilt spiked through him and he quickly tucked his paws beneath his chest to make sure he wouldnât do it again.Â
âSorry, dad,â he said, âI didnât even realize.â He glanced around, grateful that Sagetooth had gone to SkyClan to help Tangletooth deal with a redcough outbreak.Â
âOh, Itâs alright, honey,â Oddstripe said with a flick of his tail. âJust try to take deep breaths. Youâre gonna do great.âÂ
âI know,â he said, âI just hate waiting.âÂ

âItâs almost time,â Fogkit muttered to herself. She enjoyed muttering, especially if there was no one there to listen. It made her feel like she was five steps ahead. And today, she was. She had spent all week making spells out of prey scraps and mud and moth wings and such in preparation for today.Â
Last night, Goldenstar had told her and Slatekit that they would be apprenticed at dawn. She had risen early to groom her fur and scatter feathers around the camp for good luck. Now she sat hunched in the dark, hidden in the grass near the nursery, waiting for dawn. The sky was starting to turn a soft, pretty pink.
