Apollo 17, 1972
The last splashdown of the Apollo program was in December 1972. My parents were both alive (and iirc we hadn't learned of mom's cancer yet... though it would be soon), a young couple with four children aged 7 (about to be 8 a week later) to 2.
I turn 60 this summer. That's how long it's been; most of a lifetime between manned moon missions.
I have no real memories of the Apollo program; as I like to put it, I'm old enough to have seen the first moon landing on TV but not actually old enough to remember it. I do remember the space shuttles. And the space shuttle disasters (I am not a religious person but absolutely yes I was praying for a safe descent, splashdown, and retrieval for Artemis II. I was teared up well before all three main chutes opened safely).
I am so, so very happy to have lived long enough to finally see the resumption of manned space missions to anything more than LEO and Mir/ISS. May there be many more. May humankind not stop again, but continue onwards, upwards, and outwards.
*Beats about the head with her entire SF collection anyone who thinks space exploration is not worth the cost and effort*
Happy Apollo 17 Landing Day!
Saw someone put this dialogue from undertale over the Blue Marble photo from Apollo 17 and the new one from Artemis 2 and decided to draw it! I really like how it turned out :333
