Here's what I learned on my search for employment.

Speaking with lots of different people that have a variety of work-related experiences is important. It gave me a much better idea of the expectations and the skillset required for any geologist who wants to call herself a geologist. I also soon discovered when you don’t have much relevant work experience, it can be intimidating to approach people with probing questions which might give it away. Just remember, it can be one of the quicker and more effective ways to learn! Through these discussions you’ll get to know the different types of student positions available as well as the differences between companies in terms of work periods, living conditions, wage, etc. You may even gain insight to more personal decisions such as which stream you’re best suited for or more interested in... For example mining vs. exploration?

If you struggle with approaching strangers with questions, additional newsletters with updates on the industry and related professional associations are available with a student membership in relevant communities, so in my case the APGO and the PDAC. Along with the industry info these memberships can act as an additional networking community, and it doesn’t hurt to spice up your resume with a little active involvement either.
