As this winter and the first quarter of 2018 comes to a close, I look back on a profoundly impactful season where I was grateful to be invited to speak at 4 states around the country, beginning with a standing ovation of over 800+ people at #lebanonvalleycollege, returning to my public speaking roots at #rutgersuniversity for #itasaecc, staying home for #apamsa at #nyumed, and integrating myself in a poignant weekend at #grandrapids for R.I.C.E. for #grandvalleystateuniversity: “Just so you know, we attended your talk and it's 2 am and we're still thinking about it. Thank you.” “Hey I don’t know if it’s too late to send this message or if this number isn’t available anymore but you are honestly the best speaker I’ve heard at LVC so far. Your story made me think a lot and, not to sound cliche, inspired me. Most speakers, with all due respect, come in with a rather typical “I had struggle, I overcame, now live struggle free” narrative, which is good and all but to me it just became repetitive. I expected your story to be just like that, but instead you taught that struggle and problems are a law of life, and you find your passion and happiness in order to prevent burnout. I then found a business card with Basils Cathedral on it and as someone born in Russia, it touched me even more and I felt even more connected. I truly started thinking about how much life I’ll miss if I just focus on being a doctor and nothing else, and I’ll devote more time to things that make me genuinely happy to be alive. I hope to someday travel with you and God bless you on your journey through this weird rollercoaster called Life.” #speaking #ted #tedtalks #lvc #lebanonvalley #gvsu #michigan #nyu #rutgers #newbrunswick #nj #ny #newjersey #itasaecc2017 #itasaecc2018 #inclusionexcellence #keynote #publicspeaking #motivationalspeaker (at Lebanon Valley College)
So glad to have had the opportunity to attend this year’s #APAMSA regional conference at #UCDavis with my favorite #UCSF ladies! (at UC Davis Medical Center)
Stick it to Stigma
Showcase: NOELA Community Health Center
Julie Hoang works at the New Orleans East, Louisiana Community Health Center. During her talk, she covered some health problems prevalent among the Vietnamese American patient population in New Orleans East. At her clinic, they use a sliding pay scale to treat primarily Vietnamese-speaking and Spanish-speaking patients. (40% Vietnamese!).
Type 2 Diabetes:
Of 1262 Asian patients, 258 of them had Type 2 Diabetes.
Hepatitis B:
is passed on through body fluids/transfer. Few people know they have it because it rarely presents with symptoms, but Hepatitis B is common among Asians because the standards of sterilization are not as strict as in "the West.” Needle reuse in things like acupuncture have increased the number of people with Hepatitis B. In the USA, Asian Americans are only 5% of the general population but have 50% of the chronic Hepatitis B cases. woh.
Cervical Cancer:
There are higher cervical cancer rates in Vietnamese American populations, probably due to lower screening rates.
Some History:
Vietnamese Americans living in New Orleans have lived through Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill. These events have increased the risk for PTSD and PHQ-2 Screenings are a potential diagnostic for mental health problems.

I had the opportunity to attend the APAMSA Region IV Conference at Tulane University SOM this past weekend (02/20/2016). This series of posts highlights some of the information I gained from that conference.
