Hi, I'm an extremely amateur conlanger.
Not sure how to word this, but I've finally finished making my phonology into something I like. I've got a bit of very basic phonotactics. My problem is that now I'm having significant trouble coining words that sound natural and not forced or weird to practice my grammar. How do you deal with something like that?

Hi! I'm curious about sound changes and if there’s a list of the most common ones across different languages. I'm planning on making a conlang but I'm stuck on how to make my proto-lang evolve over time.

I just finished reading The Art of Language Invention—what do you have against kale??
Taste and texture. I don't mind if it's in stuff, mostly ground up or indistinguishable. I once had some kale "chips" at a hipster joint in Boulder (around 2014, I think). Greasy, flaky, oily, and the things absolutely broke down and stuck to your lips and teeth. Almost $20. One of the worst things I've ever had at a restaurant—and I had a $35 pizza at an upscale place in LA with Oscar Meyer hot dogs and flaccid french fries on it.

I got both your book (the art of language invention) and Jessie’s textbook for Christmas ! Which should I read first ?!
Hmmmmm... That's a super good question. I've never thought about that. The Art of Language Invention is definitely a shorter read and may be a breezier read, so you could start there, but there may be parts that are opaque because they aren't explained in as great detail. You'll understand it better if you read The Conlang Guide first. If you want to do it thoroughly, do The Conlang Guide first. If you just want to get into it, read The Art of Language Invention first. I think that's what I'd say. (Btw I asked Jessie and she said something very similar!)

I'm delighted to hear that! While you're here, though, let me also recommend my wife Jessie's new book How to Create a Language: The Conlang Guide. It's longer, more detailed, and penguin-flippin' incredible. She was also able to design the cover herself. She comes from rural (and I mean rural) Missouri where a common nighttime occurrence for her was seeing fireflies in the forest. She used a photo of fireflies in the forest and then added glyphs from our various orthographies (hand-drawn by her!) to look like those fireflies:
It's so very her. :) (And it's in our LangTime colors: green and yellow!)
