There’s something to be said about new Top Model documentary, the world of reality TV and the MeToo movement.
Especially with all these claims about following directions and being afraid to step out against them on levels of middle leadership. And most of all, the way that no matter what the extremely cruel scandal is, it is always defended back to “being how the modeling world is”.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not an ANTM super fan (I watched it some while it was running as a kid) or an expert on the world of modeling. But it’s struck me, especially with these after release interviews with the judges, that so much of the rhetoric around what was done to those girls was what most of the acting world/performance world was saying in response to the MeToo movement.
“It’s just how it’s done - to have dozens of men on set during the shooting of an intimate or nude scene/ to body shame women and give them traumatic makeovers
“You don’t want to be seen as difficult” - being discouraged from speaking up about harassment and protecting the ego of the men on set// not being allowed to call harassing male models on set out or not saying no to aesthetic dental procedures
“Things are different now” - not being granted respect or bodily autonomy was wrong then, you just weren’t being called out
To name a few. I don’t know maybe I’m just seeing things. Anyone else notice these parallels?
i recently watched the antm documentary and as a long time watcher of the show I was still able to find new things to be disgusted with about Tyra Banks and Ken Mok. That being said I feel like the documentary was still too scared to cover some topics and I wish we had gotten more insight. particularly (for me) when it comes to Isis King and Heather Kuzmich. Isis was a trans contestant who was originally used as an extra in the homeless photo shoot they did in cycle 10 and was then recruited to the show in cycle 11. My memory of how the girls and the production team treated her is abysmal. I am thankful for presence on the show but she was disrespected and purposefully outcast from the other girls and I wish that was addressed. similarly, Heather is a model with autism and on the show they also disrespected and outcasted her from the other girls. I was in a rage at both of their treatment and I really wish they were held accountable for that. I think production were just too scared to talk about less safe “political” topics and that’s garbage

When they were getting that good money and hanging with celebrities at glamorous events, were they handing out money to us?

If you aren't angry or sobbing while watching Reality Check covering Shandi's story, I don't think I can be friends with you. Also anyone saying "she cheated" - did she? Did she? I think we all know what actually happened there and that was not consensual in the slightest...

Seeing the discourse over shandi from antm and how they tried to gaslight her and the audience abt her SA and made it seem like she cheated on her bf reminded me of the other SA situation on that show, where this girl (keenyah) was literally getting saed during the photoshoot by a guy and when she spoke up, they literally shut her down and downplayed it and blamed her for being unable to focus on the photoshoot, it’s crazy that it aired on tv once with no backlash, and i hope this situation gets more attention just like shandi’s, i just looked it up and ig this situation was actually acknowledged in the documentary by netflix so why isn’t it getting any attention? Is it because the contestant is a woc ?
