I had to start my blog with this! I watched it when it was first posted. It was the first thing to make me think critically about how social I am (technologically & personally). Judging by the comments others had the same reaction.Â
This video reflects what was in Turkle’s TEDtalk in our first week learning materials. She discussed how we are less engaged with a person right in front of us because we want to be online instead (Turkle, 2013), among other issues bought up in this video.
It also argues the social capital theory (Siapera 2012, p. 194-195) from our second week. ‘Not enough I’s and We’s. Technology, has made us more selfish and separate than ever.’ 0:22 - 0:28. From the second week, what attracted me most was the idea of homophily. Is a society connected more even if they’re only connecting with people they agree with? The benefit of the outside world is that the diversity of ideas is more or less unavoidable (Sunstein, 2001, republic.com) at times, whereas we can pick and choose what ideas we’re exposed to online.Â
