Nearly every single woman in Perseus’s story is treated with way more humanity and complexity that retellings give them credit for, Aganippe, Danaë and her nurse, Clymene, Athena, Andromeda, Cassiopeia and even the gorgons and nereids are all so damn interesting and they all do something important to push the narrative but retellings will have you believe they were all ignored in mythology and need to be fixed.

I was confused why Wikipedia sites “Antiphata” as an alternate name for Eurycleia but I think this is the case painting that names her that.

Antiphata means “against renown” or “anti talker” (according to some ppl online lol) and I think it lowkey fits her character? At least the one in my head bc she goes against Acrisius’s words, against his “talk” so to speak. Coincidentally it sounds like the Arabic word Intifada which means revolt/rebellion tho that would be a false friend (or perhaps cognate?) word.
I’ve been thinking about that nurse that was locked up with Danaë and helped her raise Perseus, only to get killed. She doesn’t even have a name so I named her Antiphata, which is an alternative name for Eurycleia, Odysseus’s nurse. This screenshot is from Daniel Ogden’s book Perseus, he mentions that the fact that Acrisius imprisoned the nurse with Danaë meant that deep down he still cared about her, while I think that’s true it’s rather depressing that even this small act of kindness meant imprisoning not one, but two innocent people. Doesn’t help that a lot of nurses back then were slaves (Eurycleia certainly was) so Acrisius robbed this woman of her freedom twice.
Since Danaë’s nurse isn’t given a name I’ll name her Antiphata, which is an alternate name of Eurycleia, Odysseus’s nurse.
