I find it so disheartening that animelab is now just a footnote on the Crunchyroll store wiki. ONE MILLION USERS. At the time Australia had 25.2 million people and New Zealand had 4.89 million. So out of the combined estimated population of 30.09, roughly 1 in 30 had animelab. Unless I'm doing the math way off, which some part of me hopes that given how much my internals sank just thinking that.
FUCK FUNIMATION, FUCK CRUNCHYROLL.
Rant bellow the cut.
The two biggest anime exclusive sites I can find are HIDIVE and Retro Crush, both are not available in Australia and New Zealand. Do you understand the problem, because the deeper you go the worst it gets. I am so tired of trying to find places to watch things and them being US exclusive because I'll be honest, we are not seen as profitable so nobody cares.
I used to have Cruncyroll after my animelab tuned into Funimation and then Cruncyroll where I stayed until it cost $149.99 for the year subscription the second year in a row. I know that that won't seem bad to some people but Australia is a place where disposable income isn't in excess. I just couldn't justify it. They would spit in my face the entire time too, ads for the shop constantly. Pop up screen blocking ads for the shop as soon as I opened the app. Worst still, the shop was US only, at the time and largely now too.
FUCK SONY FOR ALL OF THIS, FUCK CAPITALISM, FUCK AMERICAN-CENTRISM
But at the end of the day, fuck us I guess. Fuck us over and over again. Lead our men to die and leave us defenseless. Take our shows and turn them into nothing more than products that we see no profit from. Laugh at our accents unless you find them hot. Make us use your word, watch your shows, and when we aren't making you profit, cut us off.
I don't hate people from or in the US, I hate your government, I hate your companies and those who run them. I hate western ignorance, and if you think that is a part of you, allow me to hand you a scalpel. Cut that shit out. This isn't about you.
Edit, the Australian population link keeps dropping so: https://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/[email protected]/lookup/3101.0Media%20Release1Dec%202018

Ngl, I am not at all happy about this both in general and as an Australian.
Why as an Australian? We used to have an anime site for aussies and new Zealanders called anime lab. They did their best to get us, an audience treated like we're in narnia or still have an ocean to cross in the way, content for us to enjoy, if they advertised it, we got it. But funimation bought them out and merged them just late last year. They ensured us they wouldn't forget us, which I'm sure will last at first, until we eventually fade from memory as an inconvenience, and now they've been taken by a company who made no such promises, so again, Narnia. Secondly, funimation promised to keep animelab workers under their employ. Crunchyroll has no obligations to inherit that promise, so they're likely out of a job too. Yay.
Now as for why I'm pissed as a general consumer, it's because competition is healthy and exists for a reason dammit! Without that they have no motivation to keep up a variety of quality goods, they just have to wait for us to forget. The competition also meant that we had a legal alternative to watching shows the big boss didn't want to pay for. Now it's them or pirating. We may be paying less but that also means the creators and contributors will be paid less as well, because an American company paying others their due and respecting them? Animators no less? Ha!
So whoop dee do, yay for us. How long until we start singing Yo Ho Ho? Bets anyone?
Who do you guys think would win a fight if a Battle Royale went down between all of these hotheads? So I recently heard that Funimation after taking over Animelab, who I’ve been with since beta, are now acquiring crunchyroll who I’ve been with for almost a decade T__T very sad day
Dear funimation please use crunchyrolls app and website as the funimation one is honestly worst of the three in my experience 🤣
