The silver glow of her eyes concentrates in shape as Tali smiles behind her visor, eyes squinting from the ease and sincerity of her expression.

Tali’s offer catches Wren off-guard, and for a second she looks almost cornered, prey.

It’s her own vulnerability that scares her. Is it that transparent? Can her friends tell? However, most of all, she’s cornered and conflicted by her own feelings: the raw yearning for company. She doesn’t want to be alone, yet at the same time, the thought of letting someone, anyone, in, makes her want to flee.

She crosses her arms and stares him down (as much as she’s able to, being considerably shorter than him). Wren hasn’t really behaved this way with him, before (though she’s sure he’s aware she can be  stubborn),  but then, Nihlus hasn’t blatantly tried to brush her off like that before, either. He doesn’t faze her; as much as he probably knows she’s stubborn, it’s unsurprising to her to see him so grumpy.

She can take care of herself! That’s what she wants to say, because Nihlus needs to let her fucking be in the world like a person, like someone who can stand on her own two feet, because she’s not a child, she’s not less capable than he is. But that may be...  projecting how the galactic community treats humans in general.  Projecting her own insecurities, even.

So, rather than lashing out defensively, Wren checks herself. Lets her unfounded anger dissipate. It would be easy, to accuse Nihlus of being patronising, but it wouldn’t be fair. They are bondmates, even as their relationship isn’t... what that usually entails. Or, at least, hasn’t started that way. It means something, to them both.

She takes a moment to breathe the urge to defend herself from him, to shut off emotionally, away, her eyes meeting his all the while.

The waning adrenaline is making her exhausted, but the fright isn’t quite completely gone. She got angry because he could have gotten hurt, on her behalf. Wren doesn’t like it, someone putting themselves in between her and what wants to hurt her. Who likes seeing other people get hurt on your behalf? No one.
