My apologies if someone has already brought this up, but I just thought of something quite heartbreaking.
When Wednesday chooses to go to Tyler and kiss him, that that is the first time someone, anyone has shown him genuine tenderness in many years, and from a real desire to connect with him. His relationship with his father has been poor, Laurel is preying on him, and he doesn’t seem to have any actual friends.
I have so so many thoughts about Jill joining the Friends of Narnia around the same time that Susan retreats and leaves it all behind so uhh... ramble below I guess.
I often think about Jill as a catalyst for Susan leaving, because Susan and her siblings have all had to leave Narnia now and her little cousin is still wrapped up in it all but he has the support of the four of them and Digory and Polly and then suddenly he's gone back again and taken this stranger with him and Susan has nothing against Jill, but she's now another person inducted into this thing that's been the source of all her greatest joys and her greatest pain. And Susan sees this ten year old girl with a loss before her that she can hardly imagine yet, even after hearing all their stories (because of course they tell Jill all the best parts of Narnia but rarely the painful parts) and she can't stand to see this again after going through it herself and seeing her siblings go through it too. And so Susan retreats because this is her breaking point. Because if Jill is a new face, what's to say there won't be another in a month? A year? How long can this go on and how many lives will Narnia touch only to eventually leave them back in England forever?
And on Jill's part, she meets this group of strangers who have all been to Narnia too and she gets to hear about all the good days they spent there, and even if her time there was a struggle she can hope for something better when she goes back, because she knows she's going back. And these people all become her friends and teach her the Narnian stars and how to shoot a bow properly, but it's Lucy who teaches her because the Queen who was famous for her archery is painfully absent and she left the group not long after Jill joined, and she can't help but feel as if it's something she did.
