Fresh off Grammy-award wins for Wild and Clear and Blue and “Ancient Light,” I’m With Her announced its first live album.
Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan unveiled Sing Me Alive (April 17) on “the Late Show with Stephen Colbert” via their acoustic, no-drums arrangement of Paul Simon’s dominated-by-percussion track “The Obvious Child.” Much as they do in translating “Ancient Light” from studio to stage, I’m With Her address this potential obstacle with muted guitar and octave mandolin strings, rendering it a non-issue.
Watkins’ fiddle, meanwhile, holds both songs together in both lead and rhythm capacities - a subtle, yet powerful underlining of her prowess on her main instrument.
And then there are the vocals. Never static and just as frequently perfect, these musical sisters sing in blood-kin harmony despite sharing zero percent DNA.
“Ancient Light” has, with good reason, been the go-to number as IWH make the W&C&B promotional rounds. There’s good reason to think Simon’s African-inspired tune will be the same for Sing Me Alive.
The reasons are obvious, child.
