I'm making an analysis of this scene because fuck it, it means sm to me
so basically the scene im talking about is the one above and why (because fuck you l like adam and lute) it means so much to me
first off when do we actually see adam smile and im not talking about when he's being an asshole to charlie or making some unfunny sex joke. I'm talking about when he looks genuine.
Like he looks actually happy, not entertained but happy because thats what it is with charlie. He's smiling because he's entertained with her reactions and how pissed he's making her.
Whenever we see him smile it has this almost evil feel to it (whether that be with the teeth in the mask that he wears or not although it probably is... i'll get to that later). It feels like he's meant to be the villain. He's meant to be someone you're meant to hate. So why in this scene does it make you feel bad for him and lute? (almost depending on the person cause yes i know some of you jumped up with joy at this, i aint judging)
it makes you feel bad because there's something human in this scene whether we like it or not. that also comes with the removal of their masks. we've never seen adam without his mask so him losing it in this scene provides us with the sense that 'hey hes still human' he's not some eldritch being sent from hell/heaven. he's a guy.
this also comes with the removal of lutes mask. we see her genuine emotion. we actually see her being to cry something that honestly seems almost out of character for her seeing as she's pretty much that one character whos like 'fuck it lets power through this'
this also is similar to adam smiling cause it shows you that in the end he wasn't a total asshole.
but back to the masks. the masks make them have pretty sharp looking teeth which is something that we associate with sharks or some sort of predator. yet removing the teeth (actually adam doesnt even smile with his teeth) you suddenly get a lot more of a human feeling
they dont feel like a villain anymore (even though thats what they are) they feel like a person. it doesnt make him feel like a threat anymore so you have an actual ability to feel bad for him.
but moving on (i ramble a lot so this may not stay on track but its fine :D ).
our last scene of adam in this entire show (im pretty sure like yknow... direct scene) is him smiling. him showing genuine human emotion. because whether or not you guys wanna admit it adam was the first human, and he does have feelings that pertain to humans. so why have this be our last view of him? of him being quite literally beaten down.
well personally i feel like this is because the show wants us to see him as lute sees him. she saw him (as from what ive gathered) as a genuine friend. she actually liked his company and liked hanging around him.
so this pushes her idea and avenging adam or getting revenge for his death. if we didnt have this scene her just getting upset at lilith and taking charge randomly and getting just randomly mad at the hotel would be kinda... eh.
like it wouldnt make for that good of a story.
but with our last moments of adam being him smiling at lute it shows us basically something else. that he cared, for what? we dont really know but he cared for something because its clear that the extermination failed and adams dying. hes fucking dying something he seemed so upset over two seconds ago screaming and shouting how he shouldnt die or whatever
so its most likely that he cared for lute making this scene all the much sadder. besides its the only thing we can assume seeing that lute was the last thing that he saw before passing on.
also ive seen theories that make a lot of sense with lute being the only one who stuck it out with adam till the end. lilith left him, eve was created from his fucking rib and yet she most likely left him. so he probably died pretty damn along the first time around
so lute being there for him and showing that she cared for him and that she still cares for him probably meant a lot. most likely because she stuck around until his death, she stuck around till the end which once again, he died alone the first time and dying with someone with you the second probably means a lot

Once, my English teacher said something that caused an intense debate with several members of the class (we were a literary class). However this sentence, which is actually true, but formulated precisely in a way to spark reactions, is direly needed today. I keep saying people react to fiction and fictional characters in such a way... It needs to be said.
"Characters do not have a psychology."
Of course, the answer one might have on the spot is: "No! Characters can have trauma! They can have personality disorders, or complex psychologies, and deep personalities, and personal growth! Characters do have a psychology!"
Except the answer is no. Because whatever "psychology" they have is not an actual psychology. It is not a human psychology. It is not what psychologists actually studied. It is not the psychology of a living being.
Whatever psychology characters have is the ILLUSION of a psychology. It is a fake psychology, an artificial psychology - meant to trick the audience into believing the characters are real people. (If the psychology is even here - because many characters are created specifically to NOT feel like real persons).
Because what TRULY moves characters is not a trauma, or a familial experience, or a personality type. It is what SEEMS to move the character, it is what the author "wraps" or "dresses" the character in... But ultimately, when you analyze, when you understand the character, to treat them as if they had an actual psychology - as if they were real people - is useless.
What truly moves the characters are... Oh, many things! The rules of the genre. The intentions of the author. The needs of the plot. The ambiance of the story. Symbols scattered throughout the tale. The cultural ancestors of the character's archetype. The expectations of the audience. The cultural context the novel was written in. And many, many more things.
All of this can form the illusion of a psychology. The author or creator of the character can even add more "veils" and "tricks" and "pieces" to the character to strengthen this illusion of a psychology - mentions of specific mental illnesses, cycles echoing a familial setting, specific traits the author selected to correspond to the character's intended personality... But ultimately it all stays artificial. Planned, prepared - but more especially, carefully selected and worked on to fit the project of the story, and the needs of the plot.
Characters do not have a psychology - or they can have one, but it will stay an "artificial" psychology. Because characters are not real people. They are not living beings. They are constructs.
The son of Cameron Campbell is more than meet the eye. I think under that masculinity and con artist attitude, is a scared little boy who seeks his fatherās approval and is probably a closeted bisexual.
Parental!Roy Analysis: FMA ā03 Episode 39 (Aka Ed and Al being problem children)
Ok so a lot of people like these kinds of posts??? So I guess Iāll do some more???
There are A LOT of parental! RoyEd examples throughout both series, but Episode 39: āSecret of Ishbalā really takes the cake for this kind of content. So I figured Iād write an analysis on it for you guys.
(Exasperated parents face)
ā¢Ok so the first prominent example I see is obviously when they meet up after Ed and Al discovering Havoc and Breda following them. Immediately they start to banter, Roy saying, āCanāt say I was expecting to see you here Ed.ā Ed immediately reacted, expecting an off hand comment about his height. But the funny thing is, Mustang smiles at this, immediately reacting to protect Ed when the other lieutenant whatās his face bad guy dude (Archer apparently but whatever) goes for his gun.
ā¢This is like a āthank god youāre ok and youāre still youā kind of moment, after all Mustangs been hearing all this stuff about him messing up stuff as usual. Thing is, no matter how many times it happens, parents canāt help but get worried. Of course, when telling Ed about what heās heard, Ed looks away, like a child getting scolded, wouldnāt you say?
ā¢Roy immediately gets serious, saying, āNo more. From now on, youāll be working under my command.ā Heās now gotten over that āoh good youāre aliveā phase and is now at the phase of, āIām going to keep you close so I can keep and eye on you so youāll stay that way.ā Al immediately protests, but Roy cuts him off, āYouāre lucky Havocās patrol picked you up. Itās dangerous out here.ā Roy is obviously worried about both of them, itās not hard to spot.
ā¢This was more of a bonus, but look at the positioning of this frame. If Ed hadnāt moved to the window, I bet that Roy wouldāve moved closer to bad guy whatās his face so he could shield Ed and Al from him. But thatās more speculation on my part rather than facts.
ā¢The next big scene is this one, where there is a big family dinner meet up with the Mustang gang (as I coined it), where Mustang questions Edās motivates for catching Scar. Heās leaning forward, his attention completely on Ed. Ed replyās pretty nonchalantly, showing heās comfortable around Roy. Pretty parental āhow was your dayā kind of vibe except military fashion, if that makes sense. Ed than questions what the map on the table is.
ā¢Obviously he sees the Grand Archanem (spelling is fun) transmutation circle and immediately accuses Scar of doing it on purpose. Mustang and Hawkeye go into military mode, questioning why Ed would think this:
ā¢Notice how this frame is positioned as well. Reminds you of something? Maybe your parents? Thatās what I thought anyway, more speculation on my part.
ā¢Ed, of course, asks what the city is called, discovering that it is Leore. Ed gets angry, asking why no one told him about it. Mustang responds with, āI got the report from Hughes. And I made the decision not to tell you.ā And when Ed questioned why, he said, āBecause it was too big for you.ā We donāt get to see Mustangās facial expression in this scene, but his voice raises slightly. Of course, this could be him talking over Ed or him being frustrated, but I donāt think he wants to be in this position, because it would put a damper on the boys spirits at the prospect of one of their victories falling sideways.
ā¢In the next scene, Mustangās unit is outside talking about how the Elrics donāt know about Hughes death. They all agree that they canāt tell them, because Edās work is too important at the moment for him to be mourning Hughes death. Hawkeye says a key line here about why Mustang isnāt telling Ed and Al about Hughes: āThe Elric brothers have entangled themselves in a very dangerous web. The Colonel wants them to be under his supervision now. Thatās the real reason heās keeping them close.ā This line is key because it proves one of my main points: Mustang cares about the brothers. And because Hawkeye is the character who knows him best, and is almost always at his side, it would be pretty hard for her to be wrong about that. Of course after that line Al comes and asks where his brother is.
ā¢Now these next two scenes are one of the biggest reasons I decided to analyze this. They are dead give aways that Mustang cares about the brothers, and while this is more Ed-centric, it definitely applies. So, Ed is dealing with Archer to let him go into Leore, when Mustang bursts in. Literally his first line is, āEdward, what are you doing in here?!ā He obviously was looking for our favorite blonde Alchemist, and his reaction shows that he does not want Ed to be around Archer. And honestly, who would be? Archer makes a comment about Mustang overreacting, most likely sensing that Mustang was worried about Ed, and tells him Ed wants to go scouting in Leore. Mustang tries to cover his concern by referring to Ed as a āprized state alchemist,ā but come on Mustang we all know you were worried. Let me just note that throughout this scene Ed wonāt look at Mustang, and for the magority of the next scene as well. Itās like when you avoid eye contact with your parents when youāve done something bad in public, wouldnāt you say? Mustang does look at him though, looking pretty concerned. When Mustang heard that Ed is leaving Al behind, he becomes even more concerned.
ā¢This next scene really takes the cake for being the best parental! RoyEd example Iāve seen in cannon. So let me give you the breakdown: Ed and Roy are walking through the hallway as Roy says, āWhy the hell didnāt you come to me?!ā To which Ed replys, āWell, because you wouldnāt have said yes.ā Roy says, āYouāre not thinking straight, youāre upset because you just learned the truth about Leore.ā Ed turns around, making eye contact with Roy and bitterly replies, āAnd I wonder who I have to blame for that.ā And walks away while Roy is left stand and frown, Edās face shadowed. This scene, wow. Itās crystal clear that Roy wants to protect them, and keep them in his sights, but Ed knows he needs to help there, because itās his responsibility. Roy actually sighs a little as Ed walks off. He wants to protect Ed, but canāt, not only because Ed is stubborn and has trust issues, but also because Ed has a strong sense of will and a steady moral compass.
ā¢Of course, many might dismiss some of these points as Mustang just protecting the brothers because theyāre his subordinates, and I can see why they would think that. Personally though, I feel like Roy wants to protect them, not just because theyāre useful to him as subordinates, but also because heās taken them under his wing in a sense. Wether he likes it or not, heās grown to care for the two of them. And that concludes this long, long analysis on how Mustangās actions towards the brothers make him a dad, or at least someone who cares enough to be one to the brothers. Hope you enjoyed, and feel free to discuss it with me and/or add on to my ideas!
Warning: it might sound a bit comedic, but thatās how I generally sound when Iām excitedly exposing my discoveries.
Warning 2:Ā I took about 99.9% of the images directly from the film, most of them are for illustrating whatever Iām affirming, I DO NOT OWN THEM AT ALL!
Warning 3: this is long. Reeeally long.
Ā Kung Fu Panda 2 has a special place in my heart: one of my favorite movies, possibly my favorite animated movie ever! Everything in this movie is downright amazing: the animation, the score, the relationship between the characters, the development they had from the previous movie, all the fight scenes, the way they treat certain subjects of family and identity, the new characters... And, of course, the villain.
Let me tell you, Lord Shen is quite the antagonist. The peacock was quick to steal my heart and become one of my favorite characters. That struck me as odd: what makes him so fascinating? I was determined to find out, so I started analyzing! And oh boy: this is one complex character. Much more than I initially thought!Ā
Ā I re-watched Kung Fu Panda 2 three times in a roll: first casually, second with production commentary, and third with my own analytical look. I might have a problem.
Ā Here you have my notes from that adventure:
First of, heās Gary Oldman. Gary Oldman is an impeccable actor and the voice he gave Shen was simply perfect, so yeah.
āHe isnāt obviously physically strong, but heās very cunning, very smart...ā. Letās give it to him: heās got to be really intelligent. He created his own massively destructive weapon from scratch, he orchestrated this whole plan by himself, heās (almost) always one step ahead of everybody... And he couldnāt possibly have all those wolves and gorillas working for him for years if he at least didnāt know how to convince people.
Heās a leader. Heās a boss. Heās an emperor. He knows what needs to be done and he expects it to be done.
But hey, even like that, he still believes in hard work and doing things on his own - say what you want, but making strategies actually takes a lot of work. We can also say that he acknowledges there are certain things in life only he can do for himself.
He has this āpeacock thingā where heās āsort of proud, entitled (...) in spades!ā, like a person who would say āDonāt you know who I am?!ā upon meeting someone. He has this sense of importance. He thinks his goals and himself are so important, Heck, he literally likes to tower over the city!
(couldnāt find many GIFs, but oh well. The camera backs away from him to show the full perspective of this freaking peacock on the top of the tower, towering over the city)
Ā āHe doesnāt have to hideā: Heās a big, theatrical, dramatic show-off. He just comes back to Gongmen from his exile and takes āhis own towerā thinking āOk, Iāll make my entrance right through the front door at a moment when all the masters can see me and know for sure that sh*tās going down, but Iāll be completely calm and collected as I do so.ā Even when heās supposedly won, as heās crossing the city with his boats full of weapons, he clearly enjoys making quite the scene.
(Look whoās talking!)
So much of a show off, his cannons are actually designed as this fire-breathing demon, so people would know to fear him and the kind of power he had. Itās intimidating in a āLOOK AT MY CANNONS!ā kind of way.
Heās a perfectionist. No other words needed.
Heās also tremendously arrogant. Because he created this āunstoppable weaponā and has all weaponry at his command, he thinks heās outdone everyone else. He thinks that his plans are fail-proof; he underestimates everyone.
Despite that, heās not completely stupid to assume he can do everything on his own. He knows he needs help to succeed sometimes, even though he will take all the credit; thatās why he has his little army.
His arrogance also shows when he tries to get the Soothsayer to tell him his fortune, and yet, he still insists that sheās wrong - even when sheās clearly oh so right! Although, this also shows his fear of the prophecy and how he wonāt admit his own mistakes (more on that later).
Speaking of the Soothsayer, he does seem to be rather fond of her. Even if he tries to insult her and breaks her fortune-telling-magic-smoke-bow every now and then, he did keep her around mostly for company and for being petty proving her wrong. He didnāt harm her or lock her up like he did with the masters; he put up with her mannerisms even if they were annoying; he reflects at least a little on her words, which he doesnāt with anyone else; and he even āsets her freeā when heās about to begin his crazy conquering scheme, giving her time to settle somewhere safe. I mean, as far as things go with this peacock, this is really sweet.
Still about the Soothsayer, she said something quite interesting at one point: she said Shen wanted moreĀ than just ruling Gongmen City... What did she mean? What more? Did he want to conquer more territory? To innovate the city? Was he doing this (whatever she meant he was doing, specifically) for his own ambitions or only to impress his parents? Maybe both? I honestly canāt answer these specific questions...
Another little important something the Soothsayer said: she could never have foretold that Shen would do something like that, to massacre an entire people... Seeing how this was a very unpredictable move on his part, I find it safe to say he wasnāt like that when he was young; he wasnāt this completely violent, ruthless peafowl we see now...
We can say that Shen is a rather curious peacock: he tried to find something different about the fireworks; him finding about how dangerous they could be might as well have been some sort of breakthrough for him, some new, fascinating theory to be explored... Besides, he did want to have the Soothsayer tell him his new fortune, now that he āproved the old one wrongā.
The guy thought he had everything right. Finding out there was still a panda alive was like... getting punched in the face... really hard.
Heās terrified of his own destiny, really.
Shenās expectations about Po before meeting him are terrifying, specially as he thinks - with reason - that this panda is here only for his neck.
Needless to say, he was kind of disappointed with the result of the meeting. And relieved. But really disappointed, he was ready for a fight!
For most of the time, heās a no-nonsense kind of guy, but he has his fun.
Ā (Gotta love how he just cracks laughing and swiftly gets back his composure. Gary Oldman, ladies and gentlemen)
Much like any other villain in this franchise, he is quick to underestimate Po due to his silliness. This does give our panda some advantage.
Some adjectives the production crew gave to him: āvery twisted, demented guyā, āintenseā, āintimidatingā, āreally cruelāĀ and āso mean!ā. He doesnāt hesitate to hurt people physically or emotionally. So, even if he regrets his actions a little bit - again, more on that later -, that doesnāt keep him from being amused around othersā pain. Heāll use whatever means he can to achieve his goals.
Iāll say it: the years of exile made him quite the sadistic b*tch. In a way, he just wants to see it all burn, likeĀ āblood, heck yeah!ā.Yeah, heās a goddarn maniacĀ for the most part.
What makes him more remarkable as an antagonist than Tai Lung or Kai - donāt get me wrong, I loveĀ them both! But Iām setting a perspective, just bare with me here - is that he makes this personal in a much deeper way. Neither Tai Lung nor Kai had anything against the protagonist personally; they had something against the Dragon Warrior, which so happened to be Po. But Shen? Oh no, he didnāt give a crap about this Dragon Warrior thing, he wanted Po.
Not only that, but Po wanted him. Our sweet big panda had no personal correlation with the other two antagonists: he was out to stop them mainly because it was right - and to protect his friends, of course. But when it came to Shen, he had something Po desperately needed to know, he directly and indirectly affected Poās life. Shen makes this a personal mission for the protagonist and for himself.
Once heās finally managed to emotionally throw Po off - which makes it all so much more amusing for him - he gets āmore out of controlā and heās āgrowing in his instability and sense of powerā, which makes him mad and excited at the same time. He starts to sound like me when I find a really good plot idea for a story, but then a PANDA COMES AND RUINS EVERYTHING, so he notices he has no more time to fancily fool around and they need to āGET TO WORK NOW!ā
At this point in life, he clearly mocks his parentsā memory. āF*ck the tapestry, f*ck the throne, f*ck the tower, f*ck their eternal peace after death.ā
He is a walking contradiction: heās nostalgic, yet he mocks the past; He wants to tend to the future, yet heās stuck in the past...
(You know how he says scars donāt heal? I believe he looks at his āscarsā a lot...)
He desperately wants to prove himself. To himself. And to his parents. And to his opponents. And to the Soothsayer. Ok, he wants to prove himself so bad, he actually needs all of China to know what he can do.
This all means a lot to him. Even if he plays some of it as a dark joke, it really means to him almost as much as it means to Po - albeit with different meanings.
He did his whole genocidal thing at the beginning solely to stop the prophecy from happening. This, however, had many intertwined objectives to fulfill:
It would guarantee he could keep doing his firework research - what other fascinating things could he discover? Apart from āfireworks can killā, that is.
It would quite literally save his life - for all he knew, ādefeated by a warrior of black and whiteā could mean anything from getting his gunpowder taken away from him to actually getting murdered. Iād say he took it as the latter.
It would, at least in his mind, make his parents proud - I can see him getting back from the panda village with something similar to āMother! Father! I cheated destiny! I cheated death! I led my men to success, I shall be a great leader, one that canāt be stopped!ā. Yes, he was proud of what he did back then.
This does not change the fact that it was ruthless and brutal and horrible, but is his perspective, he was on a mission. In his mind, he wasnāt wrong. His parents didnāt want to listen to him, they were being unfair! He truly believes heās been wronged, and now the world owns him something.
This led him to believe - probably along with other past conflicts - that his parents absolutely hated him, their only child, and that he was banished as to be gotten rid of. It hurt.
Ā He wonāt admit it, but he doesnāt know what heās doing anymore. I mean, he wants to prove a point, but he has no idea where to go next. He lost himself in his pursue for power and vengeance, when actually...
... Heās hurt. Heās felt betrayed for a long time and he bases himself on that to justify further mistakes on his part. Thanks to the Soothsayer, we get to see that he knows heās made mistakes, he knows the path heās following is not the only - and probably not the right - way for him to go, he knowsĀ he can change his course right here, right now. But he wonāt do so...
The moment he learned that his parents actually loved him and that he actually misunderstood their actions, it throws him off balance. This is him realizing - and still not admitting - heās hurt, he hurt people who cared about him and that it was his own actions that brought him to that. Right at this moment, with the Soothsayer extending her hand, heās faced with a choice.
He had a choice. He chose this path. Heās so far gone into his own hurt, revenge and fear, he wonāt ever admit heās the one whoās been wrong this entire time. He takes a path he knows is wrong because he canāt admit his own fault, he has to blame someone else.
He doesnāt want to be redeemed, he wants to be justified.
After heās consciously made that choice, he sort of comes to terms with it. Thatās his goal and heās going to see it to the end, heās not going to stop.
He learns from his enemies, so most of the time he knows what to expect from them. When he learns from Po, he gets confident and doesnāt even try to put that much of a fight; he knows Po is basically fighting himself - although, Shen will try to give him a hand at it whenever possible.
(With the wings behind his back, what a beast...)
Hey, he knows what he did, and he wonāt hesitate to use it against Po, as, once again, he learned from their previous encounter.
(āOh, does my tail disturb you? Cool, Iāll make sure to keep that in mind every time we meet.ā)
He projects. When he claims to Po that āYour parents didnāt love youā, heās actually talking about himselfĀ and his own pain in regards of his own parents. He wants to hurt Po by saying that, yes, but thatās one of the first times heās actually been able toĀ āput voice to what heās been feelingā until now.
Once he thinks heās finally won, he gets waaaay too excited. And waaaaaaay too confident. He rubs his victory in everybodyās faces! Now, he sure is peacocky, eeeeey!
That seems to be a constant characteristic of him: he gets too confident when heās winning and absolutely desperateĀ when heās losing.
Either all people are with him or against him, and whoever is against him shall perish, even if they were previously on the same team - the only exception to this, maybe, being the Soothsayer.
(He freaking killed his own second in command just because the guy refused to fire at their own men!)
He takes what he can - again, heāll do whatever it takes to reach his goals:Ā āCanāt fire? Send the armies! My armies are losing? Iāll fire on my own! Theyāre destroying our cannons? Well, do what, KEEP FIRING! Everything went down in literal flames? Iāll fight until the end!ā
If he sets his mind to something - be it revenge, killing Po or conquering all China - he wonāt give up until heās either victorious or dead (he went for the latter).
āSee, thatās the thing, Shen. Scars heal.ā
āNo they donāt. Wounds heal.ā
I believe what Shen really means here is that some problems are too harmful for people to let go of them. He thought hisĀ problems were a scar that could never be healed, so he had cope with the pain by himself with revenge, but he could never find peace. He thought the problems he caused Po were a scar that couldnāt be healed, too; he thought that Po, too, would seek revenge to deal with his pain, that Po, too, would never find peace. But he did. And Shen found himself amazed... and afraid; more afraid than he was ofĀ Poās vengeance.
A little something before I say my final notes: letās quickly analyse Shenās fighting style, because the animators deserve attention for their wonderful job - also, it connects to the next note, so...
He uses his opponents moves against them;
He uses height as an advantage;
PROJECTILES!
Use them weird bird knees for some curious yet efficient movements;
He uses his sword - which is actually a weird looking yanyuedao/guan dao - a lot;
He uses his claws a lot, too;
Block-attack movements;
He uses his tail as both distraction and a defense in quite the clever way;
Itās like a dance: agile, swift, smooth, precise with a lot of twists.
He fights more for self-defense than anything. He has cannons and an army, why bother taking offence on his own?
The exception to this is during his last battle with Po, where he attacks on close combat: here, Shen lost his mind completely. He starts attacking recklessly, he loses precision, he uses every last bit of strength he has in him. Heās just... Heās really mad.
(Iād have to put the whole fight here to illustrate exactly that, but unfortunately, thereās not such GIF... Oh well, Iāll trust you know what I mean)
One final note to this analysis, about Shenās last moments:
Iāve seen lots of people discussing what his final scene meant, when he closes his eyes and quietly accepts his death - he even turns to face the falling cannon in the last second - and most of them seem to think that thatās Shen finally finding his inner peace. But I donāt think thatās quite it. Taking everything I described here, it doesnāt seem to align too well...
What I think happened - and of course, I could be totally wrong - is that this is when Shen finally takes the blame for himself. Here, to his face, is the final undeniable proof that his actions can have negative consequences for him. Heās been facing those consequences for years, but only now canātĀ blame someone else. HeĀ cut all the strings that held the cannon. It wasnāt Po, it wasnāt the Five, it wasnāt his men, it wasnāt his parents, it was him.
Itās all over: his men are dead, all his cannons just exploded, he canāt win anymore, even if he kills Po. He caused his own defeat already, why keep fighting? So now, as the last thing he does in his life, heās facing consequences forward in the most honorable way he can in those few seconds; either that be a way of saying sorry and finally admitting he was wrong or a way to set his own destiny, not defeated by a panda, but by himself. Itās a bit of both, I think.
So, why do I love Lord Shen? Between his mannerisms and evilness, heās a very complex, deep character with an underestimated mind and, like any person, his own issues to be afraid of. Yes, he screwed up really bad, but I think he just made the wrong choices...

So we all know Supernatural isnāt that good at being culturally aware:Ā https://www.backstoryradio.org/blog/the-mythology-and-misrepresentation-of-the-windigo/
But ... anyway...
We start out with Sam at Jessicaās grave: āI should have protected you, I should have told you the truthā
Dā: I will cry for days.Ā
Honestly though, what if he had? What if she had joined them on the quest to find John? I would watch that show. Addriane Palicki hunting monsters?? sign me the eff up!
Haha, now Dean says āafter 20 yearsā either heās rounding down or they forgot they changed it to 22 years. Who knows
Dean:āSince when are you all shoot first, ask questions later anyway?ā
Sam:āSince now.ā
Iāve seen a lot of people analyzing the way Sam deals with grief, that it usually makes him fight harder instead of shut down, and you can see that here in the beginning. We can tell from the way Dean is acting that it would normally be Sam who would wait to gather more information, do this the smart way, but instead he doesnāt want to waste any time.
Hailey: āOur parents are gone. Itās just my two brothers and me. We all keep pretty close tabs on each other ⦠I canāt sit around here anymore, so I hired a guide. Iām heading out in the morning and Iām gonna find Tommy myself.ā
Dean: āI think I know how you feel.ā
Here we have our first filler episode parallel family. Tommy is the missing family member (John) Hailey is the protective older sibling who will stop at nothing to save their family (Dean) and Ben is the little brother who gets pulled into it (Sam).Ā Interesting that Deanās parallel is a girl ... but I suppose that makes for optimum straight flirting. But Iām used to that being Samās (like in Halloween episode in season 14). hmmmm .... things to consider.
Aww hanging out in a bar ⦠Oh hey Sam grabbed his laptop this time. No more library computer.
Also, look how deep Sam is getting into hunting research. He didnāt even want to look into it, he just wanted to go find their dad, but once he gets started he digs in deep.
The lighting is so DARk. My gosh.
Cue emotionally sensitive Sammy! Puppy dog eyes, moving in to sit at eye level with the vic, sincere.
āWhy it left me alive ⦠been asking myself that ever since.ā
Time for Sam to feel some parallel! Survivorās guilt, first from his mom, now from Jess, not understanding why heās the one who was left alive.
DEan let Sam use words. Corporeal isnāt even that fancy of a word.
āHer brotherās missing, Sam. Sheās not just gonna sit this out.ā O.O (unashamed parallels)
Dean like āwhat do you mean I didnāt pack provisionsā with his giant bag of m&mās lmao. Love him.
Wow, look at Sammy taking charge. <3 Once again, this whole episode is just showing how at home Sam is in a world of monsters. Even Dean, who is a very good hunter, didnāt put the clues together as quickly as Sam in this case.
DEAN
āYou wanna tell me whatās going on in the freaky head of yours?ā
SAM
āDean--ā
DEAN
āNo, youāre not fine. Youāre like a powder keg, man. itās not like you. Iām supposed to be the belligerent one, remember?ā
This was honestly a really interesting choice on the writerās part, to introduce one of the main characters in an emotional state when he is acting so unlike himself. We didnāt get to see much of Sammy pre-Jessās death. So, we just know that heās acting out of character based on Deanās observations. Dean is the belligerent one, Dean usually shoots first and asks questions later. And the show does follow up with this, in later seasons I think we would all agree that Sam usually likes to ask questions, understand the situation, and Dean is much more headstrong and ābelligerent.ā But when Sam is grieving, he becomes different.
Dean: āSaving people, hunting things, the family businessā (Hooray more memed lines!)
Sam: āthat makes no sense, why doesnāt he just call us? Why doesnāt he tell us what he wants, tell us where he is?ā
Dean: āI donāt know. But the way I see it, Dadās given us a job to do, and I intend to do it.ā
Ok, this is bringing up another subject ā faith. One of Samās issues with John (and he has a lot) is that John expects them to follow him unquestioningly and Sam has a lot of questions. Dean had complete faith in his Dad, he didnāt need to know all the details to trust that he would lead them the right way (this is perfectly demonstrated in Sam and Johnās argument later in the first season). But when it comes to God, Dean has no faith whatsoever. Sam, however, does have faith in God, for a long time (until the end of season 14 I think). He chooses to hope, to pray even when he doesnāt know if anyone is listening.
This conversation does remind me of Chuck in some ways. He manipulates the boys into doing things, going places, but he never outright tells them what to do. I donāt know ⦠this is making me wonder what a comprehensive study of Chuck vs John Winchester would bring up⦠but I donāt care enough to really do it. Just think about it.Ā Ā
Dean: āAll that anger, you canāt keep it burning over the long haul, itās gonna kill you.ā
Hey, 2005 Dean? Could you maybe come talk to 2020 Dean and give him some advice? A few pointers? Yeah, thanks, thatād be nice.
Oh no, the protective older siblings got taken! Now itās up to the plucky little brothers to save the day!
Lmao the trail of m&mās.
Solidifying the parallels at the end there, Sam shadowing little brother Ben, Hailey talking to older sibling Dean. They found their brother, the Winchesters will find their dad.
SAMāS GONNA DRIVE!?!?!? OH MY GOSH THAT HASNāT HAPPENED IN SO LONG THIS IS A FOREIGN IDEA.
Reminder that black panther is a superhero movie. A revolutionary one but still a superhero movie.
If you really wanna make a difference. Learn from the wisdom that was put into the movie. Learn to unify, learn to become better people by working together and letting go of racist and prejudice behaviors. Learn to become one people. Learn to help others even when your scared to. And just because you have a kind heart like t'challa doesn't mean your not strong. You can cry and feel. Your human. But you can pick yourself up,go out there n kick ass.
And not everyone who is family is a good person. And sometimes you have to let them go. Not everyone who you think is a bad guy is truly a bad guy. Learn to educate other to become better people. Respect other cultures.these lessons were shown in black panther.
And look beyond the fact killmonger was played by the sexy Michael b Jordan. His character was fucked up and sad and hurt. He was selfish. Not beknowing to himself though. He didn't know what he was doing was hurtful. T'challa never had a chance to tell him, tell his cousin he was loved n he wa trying to help him. Killmonger was too blind by rage, hate and vengeance. He was hurt.
But killmonger,Erik, he didn't wanna attone for what he did. He took a cowardly way out. And no he is not his ancestors,he's his own man with his own decisions,he alone had the power to take control of his life but gave into grief and suffering, the streets n the harshness of the American imperialism got to him. He is also part wakandian. And he doesn't ever truly understand that part of him. He never got a chance to. He was manipulated by corrupt goverment. And Ross addicted that was a mistake he regretted. Ross became a better person by realizing this was wrong.
And everyone realized this man, this young boy. Was hurt. And no I'm not excusing the shit Erik did. He was terrible. We all can be terrible. But we all human bruh.
Erik made his choice by the end of the movie. But it was in those moments you felt truly that hurt n sorrow n regret in his eyes.
He'd rather die then face wakandian judgement. While selfish and a more villain trait. It is also a human trait.
Erik never learn true honor like t'challa.
Erik is that tragic villain. The true arch type of it. The one you can say is a bad guy,is scary,is selfish,is damaged, and you probably would never in a million years every bring home to momma. But you pity him.
A really well written villain makes you not like him a hate the shit he does, and you want him to pay for his crimes n injustice, but yet you pity him as a human.
Just as you would any real person.
Yes I love Erik killmonger. But I love the other. Characters as well and I wish people would give them love too.
T'challa is a better king for wakanda because he not only understand wakanda, duh he lived there his whole life. But because he has the qualities of a king and leader.
And this whole movie has morals n character depth. But nobody seems to care outside the fact everyone looks hot. Which their not lying but it's sad nobody wants to analyze this.
Also killmongers plan wasn't just to give resources back. It as to conquer n divide. He was trained to do so. Explort resources from other countries. And also start war. But some black people didn't want war. Most just wanted peace n to be treated fairly and equal as everyone else. They don't wanna be on top. They wanna be on an even playing field. And Erik never realized this.
He was too caught up in his emotions.
Erik also was whether intentional or not. Kinda of a dick towards women. And I think that is because he never had a positive woman figure in his life. Or father figure. He he nobody. T'challa had family,a people who loved him,he had his shit together, Erik didn't.
He also was brought up in the mean streets of Oakland California. That adds a whole new level of shit. He no offence was a bit on the thug side. But he didn't yet did have a choice. He could have chose to learn about his people better. Or male himself better. But he chose to give into the hate in his heart.
The world is a cruel place. But we can strive to be better. Erik is a prime example of what happens when people of color give into the hate n darkness that plauges them. Another example of a street hero of color is luke cage. He strives above the darkness and helps others even when the word hates him. He is an example of a hero that doesn't give into the bullshit thrown At him.
Not to say Erik can't be sympathized. Oh Lord Jesus no. He is. Very much so. But he's one of those people that is the very ignorance that He preaches against. He became the thing he hates. He sought to destroy not create.
All because he was scared, alone, hurt, and angry.
He wasn't done learning.
He wanted to help his people but his actions were misguided. Partiality to the fact he never had anyone to look up to.
If corruption is All you have. What are you gonna cling to in life? If all that was taught to you was hate n destruction?
If he had been taught to love. Maybe just maybe he could be a great person .
It he didn't want to. He was too stubborn.
He wanted to be right. Instead of getting help.
Please don't water him down when you write fics.
He is an antagonist ,a villain, a bad guy. And just because he is doesn't mean he can't be sympathetic or relatable.
He is the polar opposite of t'challa. Treat it as such. An equal and yet two different sides of the coin.
Sorry for this long post. I will analyze more characters later.
