The Pequod as a Floating Nation: Melville’s Vision of America
Herman Melville’s portrayal of the Pequod in Moby-Dick serves as both a microcosm of American society and a critique of its contradictions. By gathering a racially and culturally diverse crew under a common purpose, the ship reflects the United States’ ideals of equality and democratic participation. However, as Louis Leiter notes, the Pequod’s strict hierarchy and exploitation of labor reveal how such ideals are undermined by systemic inequalities (Leiter 250).
Furthermore, the crew’s diverse backgrounds suggest a model of hybridity that challenges monolithic conceptions of American identity. Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity underscores how the interactions aboard the Pequod produce “new cultural forms” that resist dominant frameworks of power (Bhabha 112). Ishmael’s narrative itself becomes a testament to this hybridity—an attempt to reconcile fragmented voices into a coherent story. Ultimately, Melville’s depiction of the Pequod reveals the potential and the limitations of America’s democratic experiment, where inclusion is always shadowed by exclusion.

Several of the M.A. program’s recent graduates are starting at Ph.D. programs in the fall...
Rojeen Harsini will head off to the University of Southern California’s Ph.D. program in American Studies and Ethnicity, where she’ll continue work she began here on relations between the U.S. and Iran, and especially on the Persian community in Southern California.
Tim Barnicle will go to Harvard’s African American Studies Ph.D. program, where he’ll work on anti-Black racism in contemporary conservative political media.
Andrew Hernandez will also start at U.S.C. in the History Ph.D. program, where he’ll explore in particular the history of Latino suburbs, as well as continuing his research on ethnic student activism in higher education.
Finally, Molly Harris will start this fall at Yale University, also in the History Ph.D. program, where she’ll expand her research on the politics of public health in Southern and Appalachian communities.

American Studies, the duo of Bryant Saxon and Ryan “Inkline” Howell, works within a collision of styles and sensibilities – both rooted in a love of obscure records. American Studies just released their debut single. “Panama City Blues” takes Larry and the Loafers' obscure 1960 rock-n-roll track of the same name and turns it into a modern, vibrant, and psychedelic club anthem -- engaging a new set of teenagers and college students in much the same way it did in the century prior.
