do you have a download or a way to watch doctor death grip, the vinemo link isn't working for me? also reading about the doctor death grip and the (implied) stuff about nathan has me so sad omg💔
i forgot that nathan is a real 42 year old man and not just "nathan fielder" ,but i do think water boarding from milk from a massive puppet boob and masturbating in a stimulated plane -which planes seem to be a special interest?- has to be something for him irl
-🐟
° Hi 🐟 Anon!!👋🏽
Eek sorry just saw this! I've been afb (away from blog) for a little while now my bad.
My only hope was the Vimeo link unfortunately 😵💫 it's been like totally scrubbed which makes me suspicious bc... was that leak on purpose to make us suspicious of him? Bc its an indie film so typically it would stay up for at least a while before getting taken down. My conspiracy theory brain is always looking for something smh.
Yeah I've kinda had to accept that pookie is but a man. And men are weird at best. (sorry if that's offensive, argue with the wall)
Especially men who work in TV, apparently like... I think they get extra disconnected from reality and then add massive success into that and its a recipe for absolute disaster. But I do like the things he makes and the persona he's created for himself, whether its true to who he is or not. Because truthfully, I know I'll never meet Nathan Fielder or be in his life in any real way, so perception is all I've really got to go off.
not to be a wet blanket on wet fart dog, but she has done a couple of q&a forums where she said it's basically a more "whimsical" version of reality in so many words, so while I think there's a lot of room for speculation, I think the porn aspect was probably rooted in reality and the rest (his obvious insecurity, and distance etc.) were more of a inference of much bigger problems in their relationship that made the porn addiction go from an annoying issue they had to conquer to an unlivable situation given their other problems. Just my opinion based on things she has said
° this makes more sense imo 🙂↕️ °
I'm still thinking about Dr Deathgrip and I think it's totally about Nathan but everyone is blowing the sexual aspect out of the water imo. It felt like this was her expression of conflict of interests for lifestyle and artistic values, which probably hindered them romantically/ intimately. The porn addiction analogy feels like it's just a jarring n goofy way to express how isolated she felt wanting to be more open about her life as an artist but her partner finding it humiliating or stressful. A lot of added pressure making it hard to perform in the relationship at all.
° this is an interesting perspective I definitely had not considered, much to think about... 🤔°
So I just finished Dr Deathgrip and have some theories. While I can say it seems to be pretty obviously about Nathan, I'm thinking it's a little more fiction than it seems.
I think the porn addiction isnt literal, but rather a reference to Nathan's work. Like he's so caught up in his work it's basically an addiction. And if you include the lactation thing and I guess even jacking off into that idea, it fits pretty well. While I also wouldn't be surprised if it came out that Nathan is addicted to porn, I genuinely don't think that part is supposed to be taken so literally.
I'm interested in hearing people's theories in the six fingers thing since the Hemingway cats kept getting brought up throughout the film as well, so there's definitely some symbolism tied to that.... And thus possibly to Nathan?
° Interesante... I'm all for symbolism and love layered metaphors but in my opinion, this isn't that. I think that something as specific and overt as porn addiction (and porn addiction with a specific fetish) is meant to be seen as just that. I felt like the layers of nuance in Doctor Deathgrip were more attributed to Amber and her emotional storytelling and unsaid lines. The bits and pieces where we as the audience just sort of knew exactly what she was thinking, while having no idea what his reasoning was.
That said, I would like to know where the six fingers thing came from and whether the hemmingway cats were more than just a thing she used to try to connect with him, but as for the porn addiction, I'd believe its exactly what it's presented as.
Men we like are still men, and at this point in history, I'd absolutely believe any man to be a porn addict. The way the internet, marketing, advertising and masculinity are in modern society, it's almost unavoidable that this condition is seeing an uptick and especially in the middle aged and older demographic that aren't as fine-tuned as younger people are to internet nonsense. °
(to be clear: this does not mean that anyone should tolerate it in their relationships if it has an impact on them or their partner, but awareness that it could develop in anyone and has nothing to do with how they view their partner definitely helps.)

I liked the short film. Want to add that we don't know it's specifically hentai. It would have been a lot more difficult to show and make the physical comedy less funny if Amber wrote in normal porn instead of hentai.
° I think that using hentai for the short could've been a true to life detail, but I'm sure she used it bc the aesthetic of hentai is just so goofy and that's part of why the scene where she's trying to be the fantasy is so funny imo (it's also deeply saddening but ik that's just my trauma talking) °
i think the short was great in balancing the really funny moments with the genuinely sad tone. seeing as it's out and he's thanked in the credits i hope they're all in a good place right now. amber being able to share her pov and no longer be in an unhappy relationship, nathan being ok with this being out, supporting her and hopefully recovering from his addiction seeing as he's in a new relationship. honestly this all feels really mature and healthy, from the way she wrote about him to him overcoming the very understandable urge to not have this be out. i wish nothing but the best to all involved and am excited to see what amber comes up with next
° couldn't have said it better myself °
i wasn't sure, but yeah, after seeing it it's quite obviously about their relationship and it honestly made me kinda sad bc it's obviously a struggle for him and also the women who have to deal with it. Tbh this is more than I wanted to know about Nathan, she was very respectful with her writing and he was a sympathetic character (which makes me even more sure it was about him), but lordy, I did not need to know a middle aged man I admire likes hentai that much 😬😮💨. I'm also fairly certain that Whitney from The Curse was based loosely on Amber as well, what an interesting dynamic when two writers get together.
° I agree, its kind of more than I ever needed to know (and I'm a freak about him) but also, not super surprising like... if someone is a man I do sort of unfairly judge them and am not surprised by them doing something I don't like or agree with bc as a lot of us who aren't men have experienced, men do a lot of weird shit that makes no sense.
It's really interesting to compare this short and The Curse and see both perspectives.
Probably a topic for another post but I gotta say, a guy being addicted to porn when he has a gf as gorgeous as Amber is a mindfuck to me bc... she's right there. Thesis of the short explained lol but like... its such a wild phenomenon and I'd honestly like to see a longer version of the film that explores it more in depth bc its strangely common but the women who deal with men with this habit feel a lot of shame so it can be hard to talk about.°
