If you’ve been following along with March Mammal Madness, you’ll know that the final battle came down to two unlikely competitors: the Ambelodon, an extinct elephant-like species, and the tiny but mighty Pygmy Hippo. In a shocking turn of events, the Pygmy Hippo waded into the water and displaced the Ambelodon, who had been weakened by injuries from a previous battle. And just like that, we have our 2018 March Mammal Madness champion! Hippopotamuses are uniquely equipped for water activities, with partially webbed feet, valvular nostrils and ears, and particular buoyant bodies.

With all of its upsets and victories, March Mammal Madness is such a unique opportunity for learning all about mammalogy. We can’t wait to see what next year has in store!
