Cirilo Apartment in Valencia Shows What a Kitchen-Centered Home Can Be

Some apartments seem to come pre-scripted. Walls fall where they always have, and rooms repeat the same roles they’ve played for decades. The Cirilo apartment in Valencia’s Eixample district rejects that pattern outright. Redesigned by Montoliu Hernandez, the project transforms a 1920s through-apartment—long burdened by layers of generic renovations—into something entirely rethought from within. The outcome is more than a refined living space; it’s a clear statement about how a home can and should operate.

What makes this project particularly relevant right now is its timing. We’re in the midst of a broader cultural shift around the role of the kitchen. Cooking has evolved into something social, expressive, even ritualistic. And yet, most homes still confine the kitchen to a purely functional, often hidden corner. Cirilo challenges that convention with confidence, positioning the kitchen as both the physical and conceptual core of the apartment, and reshaping the entire layout around it.
