Plant of the Day
Tuesday 2 November 2021
The bigeneric hybrid × Amarine tubergenii is the result of crossing Amaryllis belladonna and Nerine bowdenii. This bulbous perennial has flowers that are smaller than Amaryllis, and more trumpet-like than Nerine. The flowers appear in autumn and are followed by strap-shaped leaves.

September Garden
The sun is shining, summer has returned and it’s back to business in the garden. Overgrown shrubs and clogged borders need attention to make space for new planting and general refreshment with compost being added to improve fertility and help with moisture retention.
The soil is parched and it’s a wonder that things have survived as well as they have. Bigger shrubs cannot be moved yet; we wait for leaf fall and rainfall.
But there are more little jewels popping up. We bought some amarines, a cross between amaryllis and nerine, and the flowers stand tall and proud in a rather bright pink. Elsewhere the cyclamen are flowering all over the garden. They don’t mind the dry conditions and shade and pop up in places where we don’t expect them. The tiny corms, with little treads of root and a single leaf, get moved to sites where we hope they will thrive. And the kaffir lilies are splashes of bright scarlet. These are similarly left to their own devices, get no feeding and just do their thing year after year.

Sorted out the bulbs today! This is a colocasia 'mojito' which I am trying out in semihydro as a houseplant. It's so chunky I'm so looking forward to seeing how it does!
These are the rest of the bulbs, which will hopefully go outside eventually. And the two b&q colocasia which needed watering, I think I'm keeping one inside. The new additions are one colocasia 'black magic', one amarine, and a few Dahlia tubers.
