If there's one thing I learned playing through The Hidden Treasures Of Area Zero storylines after being exposed to people talking about it when it first released, it's that people do not understand how teenagers work.
Like going in I thought Carmine was going to be an asshole the whole way through bc people were saying she was the wooorst ever. And then she turned out to literally just be A Teenage Girl. A normal teenage girl who is at most somewhat self absorbed and has a bit of a temper. She has flaws and makes mistakes like all teenagers do.
Is she worlds best sister? No! But she's faaaar from the worst or being abusive at all like some people claim. Like yeah she's kind of an ass in the beginning bc she hates tourists, but it doesn't take her that long to warm up to you and she isn't mean to you beyond that.
She doesn't pick up on Kieran's troubles right away bc his behaviour isn't that odd from her perspective. Like she literally says on TWO SEPERATE OCCASIONS something along the lines of "he just gets like that sometimes". As far as she knows, this is just how Kieran is, so it doesn't look concerning to her. And as an audiance these are obviously signs of deeper, lasting problems he's having, but she doesn't have the benefit of that external perspective. It's easy to miss the signs when it's always just been like that.
And by the time it fully explodes it's too late for her to help. Bc he's so far down the spiral that he will not listen to anything or anyone. She can't even talk to him at all without getting shut down by the time the Indigo Disk happens. Quite literally in a position where she can't do anything to help. So she avoids him bc then she's at least not actively pissing him off.
I also had a similar thing with Drayton were I thought he was an asshole who constantly aggravates Kieran at his lowest for his own amusement. Picking on him just for fun. When he... isn't that.
Like yeah he does kinda aggravate Kieran a bit by being snarky but Drayton is also just... like that. In general. It's not to poke specifically at kieran. If anything he's the only one who is actively trying to find a way to help Kieran get out of his spiral.
Like obviously the other BB E4 members care (especially Amarys) but only Amarys seems to have any intention of actually doing anything about it. Lacey is busy trying to keep everything from falling apart (and reining in Drayton) while Crispin just has absolutely no idea what to do about any of it at all.
And sure. Draytons methods aren't exactly ideal. But he's going for what he's the most confident will actually achieve anything at all.
He wants to help Kieran not only for the league club, but also bc he clearly cares about Kierans wellbeing too. He even gets a bit sad at Kieran not wanting talk to him much after the events of the story.
