you are the bones of a thousand deaths .     rotten  ,   illicit  pain  at  her  touch  ,   her  words  :   she  speaks  so  plainly  for  a  child  ,   kindly  for  all  the  times  she  has  bereft  life  from  his  skeleton  corpse  .     child  says  ,   stay  in  bed          and  sans  hears  ,   with  not  so  much  as  ears  to  know  ,   please  .   rest  .

     he’s  not  sick  ,   ill  all  but  in  mind  alone  .     the  couch  has  become  her  permanent  home  in  this  house  of  his  ,   and  every  day  he  opens  his  door  to  see  her  there  .     GRIM  REAPER  ON  HIS  DOORSTEP  ,   EVERY  DAY  STILL  HE  ANSWERS  ,   EVERY  DAY  PAST  SHE  STAYS  .     he  wonders  ,   with  quiet  ,   tired  sockets  ,   when  will  she  cross  the  threshold  once  more  ,   and  rip  the  soul  from  his  chest  once  again  ?

     sans  is  not  in-complicit  .     he  has  mangled  child’s  body  time  and  time  again  ,   given  as  much  as  he  has  been  gifted  in  turn  .     HE  IS  LUCKY  NO  ONE  REMEMBERS  ,   NO  ONE  BUT  THOSE  EYES  ,   GENTLY  ,  ASKING  ,     stay  in  bed  .

     skeleton  is  tired  .     he  feels  it  ,   all  of  his  deaths  ,   but  ghost  pains  and  the  fault  lines  that  stitch  him  together  more  than  magic  or  joints  do   (   can  she  feel  hers  ?   gifts  ,   laced  like  poison  .   )   .     death  and  her  care - taker  are  a  funny  pair  ,   aren’t  they  ?     they  must  be  ,   for  the  soft  humor  that  crescents  in  his  grin  as  spined  phalanges  run  through  unruly  hair  .

        ❛  *  i’ll  sleep  when  i’m  dead  ,   kid  .  ❜     it’s  not  an  invitation  .

UNSPOKEN  ,   TEETH  BARE  NO  WORDS  .     his  little  girl  is  but  a  few  months  now  :   and  how  she  shows  it  ,   mother’s  hair  and  his  spirit            he  has  no  doubt  ,   for  all  the  way  her  eyes  shine  ,   she  will  be  brighter  than  him  some  day  .   (   and  that  is  one  concession  the  prince  is  more  than  willing  to  share  for  an  ever  firm  pride  .   )

     SHE  HAS  SAIYAN  BLOOD  .   KING’S  BLOOD  ,   and  it  shows  .

     ...  or  it  will  .   and  vegeta  need  not  be  sure  of  that  .   but  what  gohan  speaks  of  ,   he  must  temper  the  bite  to  his  bark  :   gohan  is  a  father  as  he  is  ,   and  begrudgingly  ,   a  warrior  to  whom  respect  has  long  been  earned  .   all  of  this  earns  him  but  the  fate  of  vegeta  slamming  him  through  a  wall  .

     for  what  was  he  suggesting  ?

        “  You  were  right .  ”     the  words  come  off  cold  to  his  usual  fire  .   this  is  not  just  anger  ,   this  is  something  far  more  personal  .     DID  YOU  FORGET  ,   OH  HYBRID  ,   YOU  ARE  NOT  HIS  SON  .     and  those  times  you  think  of  ?   when  he  had  little  patience  ,   little  the  scars  to  show  his  lessons  .

     but  now  he  is  a  father  of  two  .   now  he  is  a  warrior  who’s  name  is  known  far  past  the  bounds  of  this  world  .   now  he  is  old  ,   refined  to  a  title  he  now  knows  he  not  only  deserves  ,   but  has  grown  into  .

     ...  and  gohan  speaks  like  he  has  been  blind  to  the  distance  vegeta  has  made  ,   in  strides  or  on  his  knees  ,   if  only  to  stand  as  tall  as  he  had  once  been  forced  to  find  those  truly  stood  before  him  .   as  if  he  did  not  trust  him  ,   through  all  that  fire  ,   to  be  a  father  .   nay  ,   to  be  a  good  one  .

     that’s  fine  .
